    Winter Weirpools

Hi Stewart Is the bit just beyond the sill fairly deep. If so you will have a foot and a half of raging white water, and underneath that the quietest bit of water in the pool, which will be stacked with fish. Big heavy bait dropper required. Hope this works next time we get a...

    Be vigilant....

Robert, you can not criticise Cameron for being a conservative realist, of course he is. Get real man. Lots of his, and Osborne's mates, got all the Royal Mail under priced shares they wanted, and won big on the first day of trading. You just can't get more 'conservative realist, than that. You...

Which month did you catch your PB?

Yesterday, so October for me. It was a large Golden Retriever. No idea what they weigh, but at a guess I would say 3 stone. It took a 20 ml lamprey pellet which was on the ground beside me whilst I sorted a bit of a tangle. I hooked it fairly in the corner of the mouth. With the help of the...

The Barbel Society Barbel Challenge In Aid of The Army Benevolent Fund

Hi Just got back, no double for me. Lost a good Barbel to a snag, which I hate. Was using a very small running lead so the fish should be okay. Hi spot of the day was taking a pic of a young lad and the 5lb Barbel he had caught. His smile was so wide I thought the top of his head would...

The Barbel Society Barbel Challenge In Aid of The Army Benevolent Fund

Hi Bill I am one of those 'tight a**ed b****rs out there', and, yes I am offended, which is a pretty good effort by you, as I am not easily offended. I regularly pay 2 charities by standing order. They are action for M. E. and the Sussex Wildlife trust. Over the last 33 years I...

    Is it Just me

I bought the net from 'Bennetts of Sheffield' . It was advertised as a Barbel net combo, came with a very strong but short handle. I liked it because it folded up in such a way that I could put it in my rod holdall. Some years ago, someone gave my a large Korum spoon, and this will be my new...

    Is it Just me

Is it just me, or has this happened to anyone else out there. I fished on the Sussex Ouse today. Hooked a really nice Barbel. Great fight from a very tight swim and eventually netted it. My landing net is a triangular carp type net. As I tried to lift the fish, one of the arms of the net broke...

    BREAM. Advice needed.

Blackeyed beans. Feed with plain ones. On the hook use ones you have flavored with vanilla or scopex. Best Bream bait I have ever used. Cheap as chips and can be kept in the freezer. I always put a bit more flavor in when returning them to the freezer, the sweeter the better. Shaun

Common Courtesy and the half way rule

In case the 'half way rule' is introduced on the bit off the Sussex Ouse I fish, can any one recommend a reasonably priced 4 foot Barbel rod. Shaun

Common Courtesy and the half way rule

Here's one of my favorites. Many years ago I was fishing at Longham, same bank as the pub, which was allowed in those days. I was fishing the stile swim. A huge angler with a mountain of gear walked past. He then crashed his way to the waters edge, level with where I was casting. He spent about...

    Phoned the EA today

Hi Kevin If you revue my post you will see that I mentioned 'Features and COURSE FISH holding areas being stripped out'. Whilst I find it quite amusing that someone, who I believe I have not met, should infer that I am a insular and self-seeking Barbel specialist. I was simply...

    Phoned the EA today

Hi All Richard has made a very good point, which has got lost in all the other stuff. He talks of game fishing going from strength to strength because of the class system in this country. This is a sentiment very close to my heart recently. In times of austerity we all know...

    Your go to bait

A very easy question. Lamprey pellets outfish every thing I have ever tried, on a pretty hard river. The big bonus is that you don't go home smelling like an incontinent tramp, which is the case with some other pellets and baits. Shaun of the fragrant.

    Don`t just post the catches!!

Yes, I have fished today, and, yes I have blanked. I would like to dedicate this post to Dog Walkers, Eastern Europeans, and the Non Angling British Public, but not to the EA. Took the bus out to the village of Lindfield and walked down to the river. The mud was grabbing at my boots and...

A good landingnet and handle dont have to cost a fortune.

Here is what I do. I have a triangular net, alloy spreader, purchased from Bennets of Sheffield, RIP. It came with a very strong 6 foot handle. The handle is not quite long enough to land fish from the fairly high banks I fish from. So I use one of the cheap, very long, telescopic match...
