tench fishing

Personally I think you lot that are really carp fishing and catching a few tench by luck as well, should get the float rod out and do some "proper" Crabtree tenching.

You too can have a 12 hour blank....................................:(.
 
Tinca Puzzle!

Hi All,

I have recently started my Tench Campaign on a local syndicate of gravel pits, considering its been still fairly chilly I have managed 7 to 6.12 over the last few sessions.

However this evening I thought I would try the largest lake circa 10 acres at the shallow end about 50 to 60ft out (Thinking they may start to spawn soon), approx 7ft this end, (the deeper end drops to 20ft).

After an hour or so of no indication on my bobbins (Fishing the method). The indicators started to go nuts on all rods, up and down, occasionally pulling line of the bait runner. Each time I lifted no fish! I tried everything from different hook baits, hooks, hook lengths, striking early, slacking the line, tightening the line etc etc

They seemed to be on the method within minutes of casting too.

Could this be tench starting to spawn or maybe my rigs were not right on this occasion?

lol yes think you are right David, I think Bream spawn at a lower water temperture and earlier than tench? Kept me entertained for an evening after work for sure!
 
Defo bream. I have the same problem on my local pit. Drives you potty trying to hit those knocks. Keeps you alert though. :)
 
It could be bream or tench to be honest, if it is happening straight away I would guess it is movement caused by fish attacking your method feeder rather than your hook bait. Are you fishing the method fixed or running??

You should try fishing with a quiver tip and paternoster setup to hit very sensitive bites, you will be suprised at the very slight indications tench can give.......

I think it will still be a few more weeks before anything really starts to spawn and remeber Tench are pretty much last, the Tench on my local pits have not even started to gain weight yet........so I think they must still be a month or more away from spawning

Graham - Until this season I have mainly gone in with caster/maggot over hemp approach for my tench, this year there are lots of 1lb 2lb type green monsters showing so I've changed to big boilies.
I do feel that my fishing is very close to carp fishing but once you put a bait out into a mixed fishery then tench, bream, carp and even roach get caught, I just say thankyou for whatever is landed and carry on. Tench to 10lb-3oz and carp to 24lb-14oz last week's session- happy man.:D
 
Hi Phil. It was only a joke, hence the 12 hour blank bit.

In fact I watched a dozen carp between 25lb and over 40lb cruising in a corner of the lake last Sunday...............and was sorely tempted to have a go for them as they are not fished for.

Caught my first fish of the Spring today, well, three of them actually.(And lost three.)

Ok, it wasn't Landridge, just a club carp lake, but nice to get a bend in the rod again and check the rigs out. :cool:

Hi Ian,

Went back for another go yesterday, the early morning session started as before. Lots of indication, the change I made was to use smaller method feeders with not so much bait moulded around them, as it did seem they were attacking the method straight away. I then just sat on my hands and waited for the line to peel.

Seemed to work, I had 5 tench all aggressive fighting males up to just over 5lb. Cheers for your replys and I will try some more sensitive setups at the next try.

Nice one Lee, the other little change you can make is to change the method from a bolt set up (if it is that at the moment) to a running set up by placing a rubber bead between the swivel and the feeder. That way the tench don't let go as soon as they feel resistance of the feeder or spook if it is moved.

Fished a local pool on Saturday evening, it has a lot of roach but was stocked with some tench around the 1lb mark about 5 years ago. Set out with roach in mind so light float tackle, 18 hook and 2lb hooklength. Had a few roach and a couple of perch but also had tench of 3.08, 3.12 and 4.04, great fun on the light gear!
 
I want to make/buy a small weed rake I can use to stir Tench up before floatfishing for them. Anyone recommend any...? I don't want one as big as those I made for ireland.
 
Nightmare morning. 3 missed tinca bites and then done by a monster carp.................................

Back on the mere again yesterday afternoon, males of 5.03 and 4.13 plus a female of 5.12 all within an hour then it went dead. Expected them to feed again in the evening but it was not to be, funny old lark this fishing!

Blooming addictive these tincas! Had a dabble this morning with a reward of 5 tincas up to 7lb 2oz, they seem to be enjoying good old richworths tutti frutti!

To top it off I eventually managed to christen my centre pin with a lovely female of 6lb12oz, that was fun! :)
