Perch

Had myself a little session last tuesday on a local lake, fishing the quivertip to a really tasty looking snag complete with inflow pipe. Got a good shoal of stripes feeding, evident by fry scattering, but the biggest I hooked wasn't even a pound :(. Couldn't get away from those annoying slabs, which I took several of to about 7lbs. Thought the cold conditions might have put the bream off, but not yet. Have to wait a few weeks and try again, i'm sure there's a 4 in there with my name on it (if anyone catches it can they let me know).

Anyone been catching?

After being ill all over xmas and well into january i was pleased to be able to get back on the banks of a local pond a few weeks ago. Nothing big to report, but have managed a couple of 2s to the usual lobs and sprayed reds, along with a dozen or so over a 1lb. Have found that they are getting very nervous of lobs, with very finicky bites, but still fooling a few. May have to change tactics.

Has anyone one else been after perch?

Paul

Hi Paul,

My mate and I have been doing a bit if perch fishing on the Thames around Oxford and had then to 3lb 4oz (that wasn't me unfortunately!).

Also had a few bonus fish up to 2lb when fishing for barbel with lobs on the warks Avon above Stratford recently, which was a pleasant surprise.

Planning on doing some lure fishing for them on a pit this weekend too - got some nice savage gear cannibal shad lures to try out.

The last couple of weeks have been good on the perch fishing front with a couple of fish over 3lb all from the River Wharfe topped by the at 3lb 11oz All the fish were caught on lobs but i'm begining to wonder if casters may now be a better bait as i have seen fish swimming up to the lob and inspecting it then swimming off.

Wow that's a cracker rich, I'd love to break the 3lb barrier.

I did post about a trip I made a couple of weeks ago. Unfortunately my iPhone crashed before it had finished uploading. On that occasion I fished the enborne in Berkshire.

The day was murky with strong gales blowing. My banker swim failed to produce early on so I roved about trying a few holes. By early afternoon I only had a small trout to show for my efforts, so I moved up onto the local canal. I walked back to where I'd started trying a few spots with the lure rod. At three o'clock with nothing on the lures I settled back in the banker. About 20mins later I got a tremble on the quiver I gave the fish a bit of line and on the next indication I struck. After a short but eventful fight I netted a nice perch of 2lb 8oz. I thought there was a chance of more so after feeding some more chopped work and maggots I cast in again. About
4 o'clock I had a similar bite. Doing the same again I was soon into a better fish. This one made straight for the roots of a nearby tree which made me change my guess to chub. I could barely keep the fish out of the snags on my 4lb line but I eventually turned it. A big swirl confirmed it as a big chub, probably over 5lb. However it quickly went for the roots again and the line snapped. Maybe a bite off or maybe it chaffed on a submerged branch that I later snagged on an retrieved.

All of the commotion and the swim went dead. Just before 5pm I managed one small perch of about half the size of the first.

I'll be back down the same spot this weekend, as well as having a day at Barton court.

Some big old girls down there mate, never had a monster but have regularly done 4/5 2lb+ perch in a session, all lovely looking clear water perch too, blood red fins and lovely defined stripes. My old man however lost a perch that he has never given me an estimate as to what size he thought it was, lost at the net. He has seen large perch before, and I get the impression that the one he lost wasn't just big, but huge.

I had this one at 2.10 a few months back, not monstrous but the biggest out of 4 stunning 2 pounders, all on lobworms tipped with red maggot. Great afternoons fishing.

Nice fish Rich and Chris and good sesh Stuart, your turn for the three next time hopefully. Still waiting for my first three, lets hope it is soon. :D

I'm off to the canal this afternoon in the hope of a better stamp of fish, but we will see. Going to try the prawns again as a change bait, just to see if i can get them to work this time.

cheers

You're not wrong. Fished it a few years back and had a multiple catch of 2lb plus fish and know of others that have had the same. My friend's pb of over 3lb came from a bit of river that joins up too.

The one I had the other day was a pristine beauty with a double split stripe.

Cheers

Sorry for the confusion mate, didn't think the shot looked like any of the enborne I know.

Fished the enborne with a friend on friday. My mate Kev managed a two pounder first cast from a new swim. We walked the stretch for an hour or so before I moved back down to my banker swim to fish the rest of the day. By mid afternoon I'd managed a brace of good fish, 2lb 10oz and 2lb 11oz, as well as a smaller one. In the same time Kev had managed another two pounder plus a chub of about 4 1/2lb.

Unfortunately the end of the day was a bit frustrating with Kev losing two more good perch and bumping another. I also lost a good perch of at least the same size as the first two and hooked a probable barbel that straightened the hook. Still nice to christen the new rod with some good fish.

Also had a day at Barton court today with a group of friends. Conditions were a little tricky but eventually the day came good with numerous two pounders coming out. I managed one more of 2lb 4oz while three p.b's were broken by others of the party.

Sorry to take the thread slightly off track but are there any good big Perch waters in Hampshire (still or flowing). Also I'm looking for book on Perch fishing to read (reasonably up to date) to pass the time.

Cheers

I'm no expert on the area, and whilst not even in Hants the Avon at Britford has thrown up some very large Perch so that might be worth a look.

Adrian,

You could try "Perch, Contemporary Days and Ways," by John Bailey and Roger Miller. Its a bit dated, but still an enjoyable read.

"The Book of Perch," by the Perchfishers is available on Amazon for £149.99, if you are loaded, have the inclination or a forgiving wife or bank manager. :D

cheers

Paul

Thank you all. Back on track and normal service has been resumed.:)

Hi Martin - tricky day, wasn't it? I managed a 2.12 in the morning but struggled to find them in the afternoon, getting only a small one and the predictable trout. I left at 5 - other commitments - but it was looking promising when i did. Trust you all bagged up?

cheers

Jon

Hi Jon

Well done on the pb again mate. I think most people headed off early in the end, so not much bagging up done, although a few more fish were had before last knockings.

Luckily my theory on the main river proved to be b*ll*cks! Although areas where loose feed had been swirling out into the main flow earlier in the day had calmed enough for it to stay put by the time I came back up, so maybe the flow had lessened a tad.

Kev managed a few more fish including another two pounder. My two came from the spot I was fishing when you left. Chris managed a bream, while Merv had a trout on his way back to the car.

It was great that so many people caught and that a few pb's were had. It'll definitely have to become a tradition if only that it seems to bring luck to
the mighty Saints!

Cheers

PB for me today, not a monster, but big enough at 2lb 7oz. Well chuffed
