Perch

Well done Gary on the PB. It's about that weight when Perch suddenly feel big, because picking them up one-handed becomes difficult!

Had this one today

Nice looking fish Julian, seen pics of a 3.12 caught not far from where I had that chub and it looked like a football!

Nice perch Julian, you're on form at the moment what with that huge chub you had recently and these fine stripeys.

Targetted a commercial pool for them today but could only winkle one out just before dark, 2.08. Lost what felt like a much better fish, I'll be back ! The bright conditions seemed to put these fish well off the bait and the other lads also fishing for them all struggled.

( sorry, poor selftake )

Duncan.

Where has the river season gone?! I had plans on targeting a huge clear river stripey this season but save from one good day on the Upper Kennet I have neglected them in favour of blanking on the River Colne after those whiskery things.

Some cracking fish there, well done guys.

Nice fish there Duncan, well done mate!!

Something that I never took into account is how different the same species [Perch] differ in their feeding/behavioral habits.

There I was fishing from dawn to dusk thinking that they will feed on and off throughout the day like they do on commercials, having caught Perch in very hot/bright conditions before on these venues, whereas on the River they only had the quick feeding spell in the morning, but a more aggressive one on dusk, and nothing in between.

Is that typical of River Perch, and do they feed on and off throughout the day? [Being angling I guess you never say never!] I think this centers around the light conditions also.....I don't know really, be interested to hear from more experienced/seasoned Perch anglers, and see how they go about targeting big fish!
I'm just not keen on the idea of turning up to a venue in darkness, fish the dawn period, then thats your lot until the evening, so is that also something you guys just have to put up with?

I feel another book purchase coming the wife will be happy about that!!:)

The other thing I observed and maybe next season will put into practice, was where I had that nice one during the previous evening, their bites were certainly a lot harder to come by the following morning, after the evenings disturbances, is that also something you guys have found when after the larger Perch from your known hot spots, the fact that River counterparts don't take to to much angling pressure, even though I was as quiet as I possibly could have been?

Perhaps I should of tried another swim just up/below the one that produced?

Look forward to your thoughts!

Cheers

Julian:)

Hi Julian,

from my experiences of clear river perching on the Upper Kennet is that they are almost entirely governed by light levels in their feeding habits. If the light levels are low, i.e murky, dull and overcast I'll be confident that if you find the Perch you should get consistent action if a good sized shoal is present.

If however it is bright and sunny I have always struggled but I am not worried because I know that the dusk feeding spell will be more aggressive than had it been good conditions all day, as soon as the light starts fading the action can be really hectic and often you can't get the rod on the rest before a perch has hammered the lobworm. I've often found that you can catch the same amount of perch in an hours feeding blitz after a sunny day than a nice overcast day - all the dusk spell brings is a more concentrated window of feeding where they can be virtually suicidal. I would add that these experiences concern big shoals of good perch - to high 2's not the monsters which I tend to believe are solitary fish and therefore are harder to track down - It would be interesting to see if anyone else shares that view.

As for the spook factor of Perch, I have personally found they are one of the most spook tolerant of coarse fish, especially when switched on to feeding. I would say it's worthwhile releasing perch a fair distance from capture, or hold them in a keepnet if allowed but I have found good perch swims to produce time and time again and a swim emptied one day could easily be emptied the next. I also remember a time when me and my old man were catching good perch all well over 2lbs from right under our feet, just dropping lobs in the margins, they were oblivious to us being there as they were so switched on to feeding and helped ourselves to half a dozen good 2's each - I'm not sure what made him first try the fairly nondescript near bank margins in the first place either.

Hope there's some food for thought there mate, and the form you're on at the moment there's probably a 5lber swimming around your kitchen sink!

Some cracking fish people well done. Been flogging a dead horse on my local pit but have had a few 2s from the k&a canal. Too bright for the upper thames yesterday as well, so no joy other than little bait robbers upto a 1lb:(.

Hardly in the same league as some of the cracking perch on this thread, but I was still chuffed to catch a few on the Upper Kennet today, including a pb of 2-13. :)

Pole set up for perch

Hi all,

Can anyone recommend a pole set up for perch. Nothing too expensive at this stage and not an over bearing carp pole, which seem to be the rage.

The Maver Blue Vega looks okay, I suppose something in the 9.5m to 11m range.

Any advise in this area, greatly appreciated as i know sweet fanny adams about pole fishing.

cheers

Paul

Paul - some of the more disapointing members of the WBC have been found fishing a pole for Perch and I have made my views quite clear to them that it is the 'nancy way' and just not the done thing old boy.:p

Stay strong and resist all such urges - I sure there are meetings you could attend to help with such silly thoughts :D

Here are a couple caught the proper way !

Well said Guy.

Such angling blasphemy may result in an EGM where we must quickly make up a rule [we don't yet have any] that repeated use of such an implement for perch fishing may require the culprit to purchase a full round at the Vanni. Of course this sentence must be applied before you plight your troth as we know that you will not be seen for quite a while.

Another day after the perch today. Ended up with 8 fish with 5 of them going over 2lb the best two were 2.13 and 2.10. Had one at 2.04 just after the group pic
