Perch

So is this a new record that has been caught recently or the same fish that was caught on the Cotswold Water park a while ago but is only now being publicised? Apologies if I'm being a bit slow on the uptake!

Aaarrghh the perch are well and truly beating me at the moment!

Yesterday I visited a lovely lake with a quiet reputation for very big perch and somehow contrived to blank despite having plenty of pretty savage 'perchy' bites...I just couldn't hook up with them at all and left tearing my hair out. Lots of food for thought, especially regarding resistance in my standard link legered set up, I was getting some pretty serious wrap arounds but even when holding the rod my strikes met thin air. I could probably have been a bit more proactive with altering my setup but I can't quite believe how I didn't hook a couple of these seemingly positive bites.

I was thinking whether the light link was easily dragged out of position by the perch which soon dropped the worm when a heavier bomb would stay in position for the line to pass through the swivel with less resistance? Any advice would be welcome!

I will also give them a bash on the float too, but for some reason I love quivertipping for perch, and normally I don't have too many problems save the inevitable missed perch bites - just yesterday was unreal and has got me asking questions!

I use a bouyant leger stem sold by fox and a big 2.5oz lead which wont move, very rarely miss a bite on this set up.

Chris,

You could try slacking off when quivertipping, which is what i do when the perch are being very cautious. I usually watch the line moving and hit the bites then before the line tightens to the quivertip; the bites are usually more confident and easier to hit due to lack of resistance.

The new perch record of 6lb 2oz was in Angling Times yesterday - many congratulations to Neill, the captor by design - also no mean barbel angler. Top angling!

An absolute stonking fish but obviously from a well coloured water...It's completely missing those lovely stripes....looks like a GIANT Ruff !!!

Yep, cracking well deserved fish. Bill, possibly an older fish, as the stripes do wane when they get on a bit. The 6lb fish from the cotswold water park last year, was pale and that pit is as clear as they come.

I know what you mean Paul...my colour has waned over the years, ash blond now..LOL ..what do mean grey, no such thing !!!!!

I'd love a fish half that size...it's beyond my dreams even..

He, he, i'm with you on that one. :D

I'm struggling to get to the bank in the right conditions as whenever i get a few hours, its too blinking bright and clear. Would also like one half that size as i'm still waiting for my first three. :(

Couple of fish from our little short sessions on the canal , spraying red mags .

Now can anyone recomend a pack of jigheads soft lures , i would like a roach / gudgeon / perch colouration , just to have a little dabble on the canal . I know the gaudy colours do catch well , but would like to keep them as natural as poss , links to sites would help , cheers .

This time of year, on THAT canal, look for any lures in chartreuse and brown. There are a few good different types of shad in that pattern in the fox rage range but I don't like talking about them as they are all c****
