Fantastic, and great photography, well done to both of you!!!!

On my way back from a sneaky trip to Barton Court, total of five and a half hours journey time ain't to hot!

The big perch weren't really playing ball today. The crays were certainly having a field day though, activity worst I've experienced there.

Missed bite first cast, recast quickly. Hit bite second cast in same spot. Fish roars off leading me to believe I may have a new pb again. No such luck, a pristine 4lb chub does it's best to trash the swim. Another couple of missed bites and then a modest pounder. Things went dead so I had a bit of a mooch around. Nothing doing so mooched back again. Got the jig rod out to see if that would stir up a monster. First cast and I'm into a double figure pike which has been hiding in the perch hole. It gets off.

I decide to rest the swim again and proptly tempt another pike of about five pounds, this time on a lob. A bit later I return to the so called banker. I catch some small perch of under a pound and finally get one nudging the 2lb barrier. The fish begin to turn on but mostly small fish. I manage a better fish of 2lb 4oz in amongst them and then lose another 2lber. Just as I'm thinking of packing up I strike into the biggest fish of the day. This feels way too strong to be a perch. Another pike I think as it snags me under the bank. It turns out to be a huge but empty chub of 5lb 4oz.

Did I forget to mention the three pound brownie?

Sounds like another good session Martin.
I've yet to get down there, waiting for the weed to go. Off luring on the river on Monday though...

That's interesting about Barton, it seems that the Chub are gaining a little foothold there, I've seen a few caught the last few years although none by myself. I suppose with the lack of roach there now the chub are a welcome target.

I'm off there soon and will be after the Perch, I found a little spot last year where I had 4 2lbers to 2.10 in a few hours so will give that a try but I have a gut feeling that the really big girls may well be solitary fish, not hanging about with a pod of 2s. I've had many a day there where you can catch 2lber after 2lber but never feel close to a monster. Think I'm going to go mobile and trot lobworms in likely areas to cover the most water, and try my best to ignore the swims that hold plenty of good size fish.

I think most of the twos in my spot may have moved on. Either that or moved down the pecking order below the chub and pike that were holing up there this trip. A couple of friends of mine fished my spot a couple of weeks ago and had ten twos out of it, only one was probably a recapture of one of the four my dad and I had. That makes at least 13 twos in one swim! Unfortunately a couple of lads saw the action and by the looks of the bank, they had been down there to plunder some for themselves.

I think you're right about the monsters. You either go for the shoals of twos with a chance of a three, or you try for one of the lone lunkers. The giant my mate foul hooked was just mooching up mid river apparently. I suspect a small livebait might be the answer, although with all the pike in there that may invite problems.

I must admit that although I had a nice day I did come away a little disappointed due to the fact that I had a target and didn't really achieve it. I felt the first chub was a bit of a nuisance but the last one kinda put a nice gloss on proceedings. With the day beginning so gloomy and knowing the swim, I thought that I might manage one or two good perch early doors. This would have made it easier to sit it out in other less productive areas in the hope of something bigger. Anyway the disappointment was only a twinge. I do like those multi species sessions where you catch whatever comes along, but normally when it happens I've meant it.

I must admit that catching a big chub on light gear really made me appreciate it. Lugging them in on barbel gear isn't really the same. By the way, as most of my gear stays at my folks house in Basingstoke, I was using my boys' 10' Garbolino Rocket Carp Waggler. Not really one for the purists but to get a carbon rod of such quality for £29? An absolute steal. They also come in 11' and 12' versions and I think at some point I may well invest in one of the longest for myself.

I managed a session on the kennet thursday and managed this lovley 2lb 10oz specimen

a couple of chub up to 4lb 8 oz were also landed.

Had my first Perch trip of the season on friday, and sold my soul to Commercial fishery Perch! Only a short session and had 2 on float fished prawn to 2.01, and missed an annoying number of sail away bites.

They are certainly not as vivid and striking in the muddy waters of commercials, but I learnt just as fun to try and chase, unfortunately though the 2.01 had some pretty nasty mouth damage, unfortunately part and parcel of fishing at a commercial.

This winter has to give me a 4!

Guy's I'v only ever fished for Perch on small rivers and commercials, this winter how ever I want to catch a 2lb River Wye fish and not sure how to approach it, what would be your prefered method on a large river like this?

Thanks

Mark

Has it any previous form? Its one fish I have not heard talked about maybe they are kept hush hush. Good luck

Brian

Hi Brian

Your right, I never hear anything either but I thought it must be worth a go. 17 Perch to 2lb 11oz between two of us today gives me incentive to give it a serious go this winter:) only 1 of those fish weighed less than a pound too.

That is a seriously good result for a first time speculative foray Mark...good luck on your next trips, and keep us informed fella.

The distances involved from my neck of the woods (and me being a non driver ) means the Wye may as well be on the moon from my point of view, but it is still great to read about outstanding sport like that.

Cheers, Dave.

Too be honest Dave it was a bit of a shock to catching quality fish from the off, all the fish came from 2 swims 20 yards apart, I'm looking forward to exploring that particular stretch over the coming months but it could just be that all the Perch were in that one area.
