Perch

Mark,
any of the relax kopytos are good or if you're looking for specific fish patterns, how about the savage gear soft 4 plays?

There's loads Mark. I'd suggest you check out the excellent forum on lureanglers.co.uk for any questions you may have.

Good luck, see you on the canal sometime ;)

Well done on your fish Mark.

I had a little birthday session today on the Enbourne. Got to the river rather later than planned due to having to follow a road sweeper lorry all the way down into Aldermaston. My choice of swim looked as though it had received no angling pressure this season which was promising despite the frost.

Managed to miss a bite first cast while talking to my dad on the phone. Quickly recast and the fish were still there as evidenced by a pristine stripy of 2lb 4oz. A great start to my session. Things went a bit quiet for an hour or so as the sun got higher in the sky. Then I had a take on the drop which I mistook for having the line draped over a twig (a common occurance with the way I fish this swim) and as a result missed the bite, retrieving just the nose of the lob.

Lunchtime passed uneventfully. Then at about 2pm I had a knock on the tip with the line then slackening jerkily. I struck into another perch which had taken the bait and swam towards the rod. This fish looked bigger in the water and so it proved, although not to the extent I hoped, tipping the scales at 2lb 9oz. Another good fish though and I was well chuffed. Shortly afterwards I missed another good bite while talking to the missus and with that things quietened down again.

I packed up early so as to get things sorted for another session tomorrow, with my dad up at Barton Court. Fingers crossed I can finally break the 3lb barrier.

Nice write up Martin.
Saw a lad have 3 twos and 2 threes from the same swim last week on lobs. I've been using lures and also been getting amongst them.
never been a better time to fish for these beautiful fish...

Good luck.

Crikey, wish I'd spotted someone having a catch like that. Not that I'm one to nick other people's fish of course!

On to my trip to Barton Court today.

My dad and I arrived at the fishery at about 6.50. We got the gear together and walked down towards my favourite spots. Just as we were approaching the first swim, my dad asked if I'd got the bait. Hmm, nope it was still in Basingstoke in my dad's greenhouse!

I had a walk around while my dad braved the rush hour traffic to head up to Thatcham angling for some lobs. The river was painfully low and the areas I'd normally fish had changed somewhat. After getting stuck in heavy traffic my dad arrived at about 8.50am, ouch!

We dropped into the best looking spot on my usual bit of the fishery. My dad had a bite first cast but lost a definite two pounder to at hook pull at the surface. Shortly afterwards I made contact and after a brilliant fight we netted what looked like a pb. I was correct but only partially, it equalled my eleven year old pb of 2lb 15oz.

The swim then went dead, so we moved on. I spotted a two pound fish beneath some weed but it wasn't playing ball. We moved into a friends banker swim which had also changed somewhat. My dad managed a couple of smaller perch up to a pound and a half but nothing bigger was interested.

We decided to move back to our first swim. Almost straight away I was in again. This fish gave me the best fight I've ever had from a perch. At one stage I thought it was being chased by a pike, so fast did it shoot downstream. This fish looked slightly smaller, weighing in at 2lb 13oz.

About thirty minutes later my dad finally got a good fish. This time a 2lb 9oz specimen slid into the net. After a half pounder to me things went quiet. Just as we were thinking of leaving early, activity increased. Unfortunately missed bites and bumped fish abounded. I managed one last fish of 2lb 12oz and my dad lost another good fish to a hook pull, just as darkness approached.

Yeah, sounds like a good trip Martin.
I've still to fish BC, what was the weed growth like.....planning to go trotting down there soon.

Hi steve

If you're planning a trip trotting I would definitely wait until we've had a decent amount of rain. It was painfully low with the flow in some sections being very slow.

One of the best trotting sections is supposed to be the park stream, but I've never fished it. Most of the weed I have seen in the past on the top section, tends to be floating stuff that grows out from the bank (I really should learn the names). On the main river this year there seems to be very little of it. Parson's Ditch on the other hand had alot.

The main river on the bottom end it good for trotting and usually has bottom weed but I didn't venture that far down. Gunters is apparently also good for trotting, but is a bit of a pain to get to.

May I ask what preferred baits are for decent size perch.
Aiming to fish a large river in margins for some soon.
Fabulous pictures, well done to all !
Thanks

Mark, a big juicy lobworm tempted a pair from the Nidd last saturday with the best going to 2lb 11oz.

Edited as the photo had disappeared.

It varies mate. I've had all but one biggy on worms but my old pb was on a float fished minnow livebait. All my recent perch came on lobs, either with a very light quivertip or a loafer float. My mate normally has trouble getting the Barton Court fish on lobs but gets plenty on large dendra's.

The type of swim and fishery rules will also dictate somewhat. My enbourne swim is awkward to float fish and I would worry a livebait might tangle or snag me while quivertipping, so it's always lobs there for me.

Livebait with quivertip..really ?:)
Is it me being a muppet or your mistype?

Thanks for bait info re lobs etc
Like to use a minnow if I can get a few of the blighters.

Sorry mate, my mistype. Meant legering lol, can you imagine?!

I have seen anti tangle leger rigs for Perch livebaiting but I don't think they'd suit my style of fishing or some of the swims I fish.

Managed to pick up this nice 3.03 perch last night. It was from a little commercial so unfortunately didn't have the striking, vivid colours, but very welcome none the less!
