I cant remember how many twist lock landing net handles I have had to try and unlock for people on the bank.

When you did manage to unlock them GE, did you see any evidence of the most common cause? Did it seem to be pure ham-fisted over tightening most of the time, or was there frequently signs of grit getting in the works and gumming things up?

Cheers, Dave.

DG ...Ta for reply,my intention genuinely was not "avin a pop at carpers" but towards some of the crappy tackle and accessories we are perhaps all gullable enough to buy at some time.

I mean like the fact that your slippers are camo is gonna make you a better equipped, more efficient angler !!!

I have been away for a few days and WW3 is breaking out , but having read through it there are some really witty comments from one or two that made me chuckle .(racist stuff aside, have you heard Paul Chowdrey of "whats up white people)

When I was a nipper some wag gave me a keepnet that floated,,,had to put half a brick in it to use for a few gudgeon and silvers

No Probs mark, I sometimes come over as more upset than I really am, bad habit I'm afraid. My point is that if you try GENUINE expensive Crocks, they really are supremely comfortable. The trouble is, there are so many far eastern copies out there now, even with the Crocks logo and all...that just a walk up and down on the carpet in the shoe shop tells you nowt. Once you get on the gravel path around the lake, it takes about two seconds to realise you have made a BIG, BAD mistake. they are worse than useless. Then people slag all Crocks off, because they have NO idea what the real ones are like  Bought mine in a Bass Pro shop in the US, cost less than some of the crud over here...and yes, I am sorry to say that I actually like the camo pattern. If you want to wear red or bright blue ones, be my guest. You won't hear one peep of pee taking from me over another persons colour/pattern choice. It's a free country and all that.

The other point is, if you are carping for days and nights on end, you really cannot be on the rods, awake, all the time. Rods on electronic alarms and baitrunners are a perfectly safe system to use to get a few hours kip, and I guarantee I was on my fish as quick as any of the pee takers and phony purists laying back and nodding on their comfy armchairs, pretending to be jolly fine chaps....and I NEVER lost a single fish 'because it ran and got snagged up'...or any of the other rubbish those who know nothing about it trot out with monotonous, boring regularity.

Why do you need bivvy slippers (Crocks) at all? I will tell you. At the slightest beep from your alarms, you are out of your unzipped bag in a flash, still wearing the clothes you sleep in, usuallyT shirt and joggy bottoms, and as your legs swing out, your feet slot straight into your pre positioned Crocks (which are turned into slip-ons by revolving the ankle strap to the front the night before) and you are on your fish in seconds. It is a well practiced, time proven method that protects your feet...and I PROMISE you it works, and works well. OK, they may not be the best on steep, soaking, slippery muddy banks on rivers, but PLEASE don't try to tell me that bare feet are better...and I don't have time to strap a couple of boots made out of tractor tires on to my feet. THAT is why. It is NOT foolish following of fashion, it is a perfectly logical, sensible EFFICIENT footwear...and they come in any colour you like :D

I know a bit of banter is good fun....but it wears SOOOOO thin and gets SOOOO boring when the same **** is trotted out, often by the same people, day in, day out.

So, no, I wasn't having a pop at you either....and you ARE right, we all have an embarrassing collection of the most useless **** ever invented. I often look at some of the bits, twenty years later, and I STILL don't know why the hell I bought them...it doesn't pay to dig TOO far into the back of the garage when fellow fishermen are around :D:D:D

BUT trust me, decent Crocks aint on of them :p

Cheers, Dave.

I had to go back to the original OP's post about what it was we all fell out over, bearing in mind this thread has instantly fallen into Classic status and should be buried along with Carp artifacts so any future generations can see the more bizarre traits of the present day fisher of carp.

Of course and I make no apologies to anyone and especially to our member from the Colne Valley that carp fishing and all its hugely depressing brand of Angling that has ruined generations of what could have been happy and contented young men (and girls) experiences merely finding the joys of fishing lay elsewhere, perhaps catching minnow in a stream, or turning rocks over for bullhead.

That is how I and many other started, and of course we are all the better for it,we are the acceptable face of Angling, we have grown up as pure River men and perhaps have only dabbled with the 'dark side' by attaching a piece of crust to a large hook, all too easy, but we could make it harder of course by buying expensive kit, alarms ,pods matching twin sets, bivvies, bivvie slippers bait boats , the whole shooting match, and safe in the knowledge that we are part of the 'set'.

But as is the way the whole thing wears a bit thin when everyone else looks like a clone of you on the syndicate water, so we move to the Rivers, and we find that the Rivers has it's very own carp substitute, the Barbel, and so it starts all over again.........

You know what, try and remember why we took up this great pastime of ours, we really don't need all this rubbish, we are the victims, the tackle companies are laughing at us, and no wonder in our camou crocs why wouldn't they? :p

All I know is this. I am heading towards 50 years old. I have family and a demanding job. But right now, I go to sleep thinking about the start of the season and wake up thinking the same. It's very exciting and this week is dragging- and it's only Tuesday. Can't wait.
