Polish fisherman

Two points, the EA will choose soft targets, bit like everything in this country, so collar a few meek hapless souls on a commercial fishery rather than a more difficult situation on a river. As for the suggestion of leaving the country, consider the red and grey squirrel situation or the crayfish problem. There are choices, stand up for yourself or accept what is doled out to you and stick your head even deeper into the sand.

Keep my response in context, this is what I was responding too :-

"Speaking German?" And we'd be a damned sight better off. My dad fought in the war but not for the dump of a country as we now know it. This country lost the war.

As for the historical damage re red and grey squirrel, etc, ad nauseum, it is our nature - the human race that is, to change our environment for good or ill. I think I will have to wait for the next virus to wipe out 90% of the worlds population before taking my head out of the sand.

Oh dear. I went away on holiday for the best part of this month and obviously left behind all thoughts of forums and the like. Having now returned, I was amazed to find this particular thread was not only rumbling on, but still top of the board. Having read all the more recent posts and mulled things over, I suppose I should not have been so surprised....after all, it is discussing some pretty worrying issues. If anyone cares to look back and weigh up all the opinions offered as I have, I would think you can hardly miss the fact that the people who have spent many years living and/or working on the continental mainland (Germany in particular) have strong and broadly similar views on the subject, and the underlying problem. A thread that started off as huffing and puffing about fairly unimportant issues such as fish being poached....has now grown to encompass the far broader issues and problems involved.

Read back on the posts of folk like Keith Humphreys, Ian Crook, George Lockhart and several others whom have spent many years experiencing the life over there....both before and after the relatively recent mass movements of economic migrants...and their experiences tell a very worrying story. We would do well to bear in mind that such people have vastly more experience on the subject and thus are better able to judge and offer valid opinions....they truly have the T-shirt! Personally, I find no comfort at all in the fact that we are FAR from being the only country suffering major problems as a result of all this. My major concern is whether we can cope....whether we will be able to absorb and overcome as we always have in the past. Or whether the fact that we are now ruled largely by the diktats of a bizarre bunch of apparently very disturbed shadowy figures in Brussels will rob us of our national and natural resilience.

I really am unsure and confused as to whom in the end will turn out to be the guys wearing the white hats...and those the black version. However, my gut feeling leaves me deeply worried about the world I will be leaving behind me for my children and grandchildren to try to sort out

Cheers, Dave.

George, I was stationed in Germany from 77-99 with intermitent postings elsewhere and used to enjoy some fantastic angling, especially on the river Weser where If you new the best areas could produce 40-50 Barbel in a session! As to wether it is a bad country! Not compared to this so called wonderfull country that we currently live in. Although they are suffering with the same problems as us , at least the cops are allowed to carry guns (and by christ do the crims know it) so manage to maintain at least some control. Unlike our own toothless police force!!!!!
I will however add that I speak the language and would move there tomorrow without hesitation.

So the allure is that you used to catch 40-50 barbel and the police carry guns.:(
Make no mistake the grass is always greener, Germany has huge problems, and how I get severely ****ed off with those that say that this country is a toilet and whatever country is far better blah blah....If I felt as strong as you do I would be off like a shot.
Auf Weidersehen

Edit Just checked your location you live in Poole, I used to live there too, yea what a Dump, all mean those Yachts and mansions, the Rivers Avon and Stour, Hamble, Bournemouth , New Forest, must be Hell!!

What is wrong with management of any situation? We do create situations which then need rectifying, we don't have to say, oh dear that's the way it is. Lethal viruses have been wiped out, we didn't sit back and accept it. As for population, this country has or will have a population the size of Germany - is that something we should just sit back and accept? One good thing about this country, you can always buy your way out of trouble. I doubt that you'll see many Poles on the Adams Mill stretch or the Spey, so you can insulate yourself. It's the poor old working class who have to pick up the tab everytime.

Keith like yourself Germany & Europe was my oyster in my 20s & 30s and I very rarely ever came back to blighty,I became fluent in the language because I made the effort to socialise with the locals and the ex pat community.
The wesser was the place to fish as well as the Aller and other lovely rivers and things were good, but unfortunately the borders opened up and although I had every intention of settling over there I was talked out of it by some very close friends as the taxes and everything else went haywire.
Germany has become like everywhere else its struggling and although I do go out once a year to visit friends, I wouldn't like to move out there, as its changed. for the better or for worse I cannot decide its the people living there that can only decide that, As for a lot of ramblings going on here on the forum, It wouldn't surprise me that half the folk spouting Verbal diarrhoea hadn't even stepped a single foot in the country but I'm not going to be drawn into arguments. I have my memories and most are top memories. ;);)

Well I have George, spent some good times there, but I have also spent a lot of time in the Middle East and Far East whilst in the services, but I do get a irked with all this British bashing, after all I suppose I am fairly reasonably placed to have an opinion if that's all right with you.

Neil Are we reading the same posts? Please tell me where in My posts I have said anything about British Bashing or anything directed towards that subject I think you will find NONE, so please dont draw me into any of your arguments about British Bashing or anything else you may have I'm not interested. Thank You.;)

Apologies, I shouldn't have written that in my reply to you, the 'British Bashing' was in other posts. I was a bit quick off the mark after reading the 'verbal diarrohoea'...never set foot in the country ....'' comment which probably helped trigger that response George.

heard something worrying last night
went round the pub to debrief the AFC v FFC game
im fulham, my friends are AFC,
and got on the subject of EEs poaching fish, swans etc,
when one of the boys, who runs building jobs
says that would explain something he saw
hes doing a job, over in roehampton, near dover house rd
and he said he witnessed a van pull up
and four or so fellas jump out, in white coats,
remove trays of fish from the back of the van
and proceed to walk from door to door, and knock, attempting to sell the fish,
mark doesnt know a cod from a barbel
so cant confirm what they were selling, worrying all the same,
M

Men in white coats have been selling fish door to door as long as I can remember. Loads of vans leave Grimsby every day set for the midlands......... Mostly cod and haddock.

I suppose the same is true of all fishing ports.

They sell door to door round Brum, buying the fish from the fish market.

The blokes selling bin liners full of salmon in Ludlow this time of year are very definitely dodgy, but have either Irish or local accents usually and pitch their caravans along the Teme.

having lived in SW London all my 52 yrs
cant say its a practise I have ever witnessed round here before,
and I was a milkman for 5 yrs+
oh well, oh and he mentioned they were EEs, sorry missed that bit out,
M

Jim,

I find it difficult to respond as once again you have gone off at a tangent from my original post.

I being a member of the working class will leave you to it.

Remember when I responded to your post I was talking about the human race and I am sure that the natural world will find a way of controlling our population. With a bit of luck it will be long after I am dead and my ashes have been scattered.

Regards,

Dave

Scaremongering OR Fishmongering Mark

What is it?

Neil
im not saying they are the only problem round here, (lower thames)
but the fishing is dire, compared to 2/3 yrs back
and I have heard too many unsavoury tales from reliable sources
that if only 50% of it is true, its looking grim mate
mark

I have seen too much around these parts being the Fruit growing region to concern me as well Mark.
However we do need a Bogey man to blame it seems, but I would not personally put the poor fishing down to the poaching problem, or as a matter of opinion the Otter.
If we really need to blame anyone I thing that 'go to' Weatherman Michael Fish would be a good start ;)

im sure you have a good point Neil
the lower has not been in flood once this season
no flow at all, crystal clear, and a load of weed
no good for the confidence continual blanking !
even the bream are hard to come by
Mark
