guiding day with matt hayes

Matt Hayes......It's simple supply and demand, he charges what the market will bare.

Tortoises.....Mine got fed up with our dog thinking it was a meat pie with a hard crust and went to live in the neighbours garden.
Giant Galapagos tortoises were almost wiped out by the early explorers because they are so delicious. Whalers would put them live into the hold of a ship and would be assured of fresh meat for months at sea.

Trained animals....During WWII the Russians trained dogs to look for food under tanks, they then starved them for a couple of days, strapped a mine to their back and sent them towards advancing German tanks as unsuspecting suicide bombers.

True, but then, ignoring the Germans, they turned round and blew up Russian Tanks instead.

They'd been trained to associate food with the T34's!

Doh.

Don't get me wrong Matts a top angler and has put fishing on the map, but still could'nt justify them sort of prices rather spend the money on a couple of decent rods and reels. Much rather learn from books , video and the B.F.W lads theres alot more pleasure know you can catch on your own bat rather than an over paid guide.!!!!!!

You would certainly need to have money to burn to spend £500 for a day, but a lot of people have. I don't believe a guiding day should be all about what you catch, it should also be about what you learn to take into your own fishing and use for future benefits. Like many have already said, it depends on what you want from your day and how much you think it's worth.

Also consider what us mere mortals may think £500 represents - a pair of rods and reels, a fishing break or a romp with a couple of loose women :p

However, there are a lot of people out there with plenty of disposable income. I've accompanied a number of millionaires on the bank and we are talking multiple millions. To these guys a day for £500 is small beer especially if you compare it to a day's shooting on some of the more esteemed estates.

A lot of people are highly paid and again, think nothing of dipping their hand in their pocket whenever they want to.

If you've got it, spend it. If you ain't got it, find a cheaper pastime.

And on the subject of wildlife - feed the birds, they are desperate in these conditions.

I honestly think its worth what people are prepared to pay. A couple of years back my wife wanted to get me a guiding day with Matt for my 50th bday and it was 800 back then and most days were sold. We decided its too steep for us and I went with Trefor instead, that was great. I work in the city where consultants regularly earn anywhere between 500 - 1000 a day so 500 for a day with Matt is not unreasonable as a special treat if you can afford it.

A colleague of mine has paid £1300 for a private box at Birmingham City for the match against Bolton. It seats over ten and has been done as a present for his 12 yr-old son's birthday for whom his mates are invited. All of a sudden, Matt Hayes is looking good value for money!

£130 per person to watch the Scummy Brummies - Matt, you need to put your prices up!

If bankers can "earn" that much money, then surely it would be better to spend £500 on a day with a banker to learn how they do it. Then spending £500 on Matty would be chicken feed.

Surely, it would have been better to send the 12 year old and his chums on a day with Matty. From what I have read, Matty is full of good causes and for a drink, would probably have leapt at the chance of showing the next generation his skills and especially as it was the lad's birthday.
The birthday party could always watch the highlights, if any, for nothing. What a birthday party - total cost next to nowt

Captive Animals

Truth in a lot you say, and I would much prefer animals to be in thier natural surroundings, but remember the Victorians used to keep monkeys as pets, and I reckon that Apes such as Chimps are able to adapt better to domestication than alot of other species. Of course a fully grown male chimp is an awesome creature.
I used to keep tortoise(e) as a kid and those that could remember we could by them from our local pet shop for ten shillings, rarely did they last the first winter. Now of course you cant do that, and just as well, but we rarely thought about such things in those days. I have two dogs which is fine, but also a Cockatiel, we have had him over 20 years, he was rescued as all our 'pets' are, but I often wonder that that is no life for a bird like a Cockatiel, albeit he has a large cage, he has had no company of other birds, and indeed hates me, although I feed/change him, he only has eyes for the missus:p
I could not go to a Circus these days, and also Zoos make me feel uneasy about the welfare of the animals, but it is a fine line, I share the fascination of animals with many others, and enjoy the experience of learning from them.
What I do know is that being an Angler, there is nothing better than seeing the electric blue flash of a Kingfisher, the Barn Owl, water voles, and of course, well yes I suppose even the Otter...not to mention spell bound watching Barbel flashing in the gravels.
How lucky we are.

Surely circuses and zoos are an endangered species. Much better to watch one of those 3D DVDs. My gran was watching some loins in 3D with the special 3D glasses, whereupon, it appeared to jump out of the screen at her. She suffered a massive heart attack which shows just how realistic the experience was.

3D porn, surely not!;):p

lol how big were the loins?

Doh.

The missing part of this is that the Russians used German Shepherds and were trained using German words. The Germans would see one of "their" own breed wandering about and call them over. Because the dogs understood German, they would run over to the Germans and .... These dogs were called Trojans and the Russians could not train them quickly enough, as they were so effective. I think that this is cruel and would now contravene the Geneva Convention and would not be tolerated by most fighting forces these days.

Don't know where you got all that from, Jim?

GSD's were used because of their physical abilities and ease of training, but other breeds were used, too. They were originally trained with stationary tanks, but this proved a non-starter on a battlefield with movement. Remote detonators were used first, but with little success as the dogs wouldn't go near moving tanks. Many of them paniced and ran back to the Russian tranches, causing casualties.

The Germans finally realised what was going on and started shooting them, then taking the bodies away to examine, thus cottoning-on to the ruse and also the type of detonators.

Their effectiveness was, at best, limited; but it's reckoned 16 dogs destroyed 12 panzers at the Battle of Kursk. The Americans played with the idea in 43 and also something similar with explosive-laden bats sent against ships. Similarly disastrous as the bats, on release, went straight back to the US ships.

Iraqi insurgents also tried the suicide-dog several years ago, with no success. They switched to donkeys instead.

You couldn't make it up.

What would Lesser Males (and the nervous, anxious, confused and all-points or no-points uncertain) be without them?

Having to actually Do It, and not merely (s)knicker.

Do you know what boys? This thread was started with a perfectly legitimate comment and question! And as usual it has been hi-jacked by so called intelligent people talking complete twaddle (would like to use something stronger but know I would get my wrist slapped) which is completely out of order. If you have something to say which is not relevant to this thread start a new thread!!!
Why is this not moderated???

Because after 17 pages and 164 posts it proves what a boring and pointless subject matter it was! Must be minus 2 out. It needn't be moderated just shut down, god everyone must be bored!
