i enquired some time ago, getting on for 2yrs ago i think, when i was interested in having a days guiding and one of the people i enquired with was matt hayes, anyway i had an email back today apologising for the delay in reply and that a days guiding would set me back £500.

£500 i couldnt believe it, how can you justify £500 for a days fishing, which incidently would have to be in febuary, the days are short in febuary as it is and the email says you meet for a cup of tea before hand, more time gone out of the day and i bet the tea isnt free.
£500 is he really that good? well i wont be going to find out thats for sure
cheers
jerry

How much to have a game of footy with Wayne Rooney?

How much to play a game of Cricket with Kevin Peterson?

How much to have Lady Gaga sing at your house?

I'm not commenting on the value of a day with Matt, but he's one of the best known anglers in the UK....... why wouldn't he charge top £££

And lets be honest, he probably doesnt really want to take 'jo public' out, so it would make sence to price it in such a way that only the really keen/wealthy can afford it.....

whats wrong with joe public? after all its joe public who put these people where they are.
dont get me wrong ive watched his shows and loved em especially the great rod race he did with mick brown but £500 for a few hrs fishing is a bit extortionate even if you can afford it.
cheers
jerry

steve your probably one of the most well known and respected people in barbel land but i bet you wouldnt charge such an extortionate rate

I've seen him fish, I would pay to NOT go out with him and his soppy comments, can you imagine putting up with that for a day??

You can come out with me for a day Jerry, we'll share the cost of the bait and squirt, buy me a bacon roll and I'll show you how to nause up a perfectly good Barbel swim!!:):):):):)

Now there's an offer! In terms of VFM alone it's a winner.;) Snap the man's hand off.

The Chairman on Thursday

I find that I can make a very comfortable living being paid by people not to take them out. Young Paul once thought of offering Wallis Casting tuition by the hour or by the day (he's rather good, you know, bit of a Wizard, don't know how he does it, I only end up being inextricably entangled with the nearest LadyG), but when I told him that takers should be made to sign an "I will ask no questions other than about the Cast at hand" plus a "PB reserves the right to shoot / drown / insult (or call a friend - i.e. summon The Chairman's Head Keeper, Kevin) participants' undertaking, he rather went off the idea. Best for him, I feel, and even better the punters!

As ever,

B.B.

Jerry, personally I'm not sure why anyone would want to pay for a day's guided fishing unless its something that you can't do alone, such as deep sea or big game fishing, etc) but realistically how much do you think a day out with Matt or John Wilson is actually worth?

i think i looked it up a couple years ago and matt was charging £700 a day. must of had to reduce prices with the credit crunch ;)

i think i saw somewhere hes doing "cheaper" float fishing lessons at furnice mill with ed brown, like £100-£200 but they are in groups.

Nothing wrong with jo public mate, but just put yourself in his shoes....

He must get pestered day and night...
I've been on the bank when Matt's been fishing..... people phoning and txting their mates to tell them Matt Hayes is on the bank........

I agree its expensive, no disagreement from me on that, but so is caviar.

How much would you pay to have a days fishing with Matt Hayes then Jerry?

As for me.... I'm very 'small fry', and for that, I don't charge when I take people out.....

Steve

PS, if you want a day out anytime, just ask.......

Can I join the Keith Speer tuition queue? I'll pay you £50 Keith and you'll get the sarnie too.

Ray Walton I would like to book as a guide, due to the niche way he fishes, but £500 for Matt Hayes? You must be joking. You could probably have an evening at the Bunny Ranch for that!!

Hi men.

Let's not get to elitest here. Guides have a role in angling, wether it's to short cut the way you fish a curtain river , change or learn a new style , or as in the case of a mate , teach and coach school kids to get them onto the bank instead of smashing your cars windows when you have parked a long way from the bank :D.

In a lot of other forms of sports / pastimes you would not think twice at having lessons !!, as all golfers will tell you, but for some reason it seems an insult to peoples fishing abilitys that they may need to learn of someone else .

In this case , to much money , your paying to fish with a well known angler , not being guided / coached to be a better angler, plenty of others around to choose from .

what would i pay for a days fishing with matt hayes? well when you have well known and succesfull anglers like ray walton, trefor west, chris ponsford, bob roberts who charge only a fraction of that id expect it to be in or a similar price band not 3-4times more.
maybe its me i,m just a tight git lol
i might have to hold you to a days fishing next time im down your way on the teme steve :)
cheers jerry

Matt Hayes

£500 does sound a lot and since Wayne Rooney was mentioned, his young lady escort was not much more. Me, I'd choose the lady escort. Apparently, she had an interest in fishing (no jokes) and you'd probably enjoy a much greater all round experience.
As for drinking tea, based on a six hour day, then you'd better drink quickly at £1.38 a minute.
A couple of guys booked Trefor West for a day's guiding. This particular river is tough and not unusual to blank. Apparently at the last minute, the venue was changed to a more amenable river. These top anglers should show their mettle on stretches which are tough. Pay them on results and not fishing on their home turf. No fish, no fee.

Ah Matt Hayes the ultra successful multi species specimen angler, PB's:

Chub, despite being a syndicate member on one of the best stretches of Great Ouse, still yet to have a seven??
Tench, a double still eludes him.
Carp, even being the Carp Society's chairman, still not had a UK forty??
Barbel, 11lb something, wow!!
Perch, still no four pounders.
Roach, 3's, I very much doubt....
Rudd, fairplay here he's done a 3lber and purposely fished for.

Little wonder looking through that list, he now fishes the likes of Furnace Mill.

Last I heard he was charging £800 per 24hrs carp tutoring.

But when all said and done people will charge what they'll get paid, obviously tv celebrity status comes with a price tag!!
Though I've never used a guide, nor am I ever likely to, if I were then it would be on the basis of which one offered me the best for my money, alas for Mr Hayes it'd never be him.
In the barbel scene Ray Walton or Trefor West would be top of the list.;)

Dear Oh Dear turned a bit vindictive towards Matty hasn't it? Are you really questioning his Angling skills CJ and others? It is obvious he knows one end of a rod from another, unlike some others I see on TV.
He has a deft touch and and certainly knows the Severn, well he ought he was brought up on the Middle, and has accounted for 1000's of Barbel.
Matt Hayes might not be every ones cup of tea, but he has huge Charisma, and has made a good living out of Angling, it therefore seems like a reasonable charge to fish along side him. But as to why folks should want to employ a guide to help the achieve their Angling dreams is beyond me, but for those that do offer these services and criticise the worth of those that do also, but even better, is frankly hypocritical. Or perhaps is it the Green Eyed Monster at work?

Many good points. The trout video (made for Airflo/Fishtec) starring Matty with Iain Barr would make you squirm. Anyway, if the guy can pull in that sort of dosh, good luck to him. I find it hard that people who graft for a living would happily shell out that sort of hard earned cash, why I could buy a set of TXis and a Receiver, or a couple of Torix rods for that sort of money or even a few boxes of Havana cigars. Incidentally, apart from Cuba, anyone know of a cheap source of Havana cigars?

Matt may not be the UK's most prolific specimen hunter but he is a big celebrity in angling. He has probably earned a packet from what he does and don't need the dosh from guiding and he probably don't much relish going fishing with punters either..... but if the price is right, why wouldn't he?
