Fined

I wonder how many of us, if we had the sole dual bank fishing rights to a beautiful stretch of the Wye, overlooked only by farmland, would not take the risk a couple of days early??

I believe the stretch he often fishes is opposite the Red Lion Stretch at Bredwardine. Don't know if thats the beat in question. You fished it I think Crooky?

Graham

If he had exclusive rights to both banks then it's even dafter than i thought - could sort of understand wanting to beat the crowds on open day for the sake of an article. Not saying it's right - just understand the motives. If he had exclusive rights then why risk it? Silly.

Hi men,

Good point though Crooky , made me think . Then I think the close season is a bit outdated anyway , as we have often stopped fishing in the season due to watching the barbel either obviously gathering to spawn , or when they are caught in the act , but that's another thread !:D . As I don't own any bit of water , and unless I win the lotto , will never know .

To be honest, I am not sure if he owns the rights to the North bank or if it is just no fishing but it is not fished, it is quite a way downstream of Bredwardine although I don't know how far the Red Lion stretch reaches as I have never fished it. Bob's bit is below Canon Bridge and I have fished it twice, it is a very nice piece of river indeed.

I took a disliking to the bloke after he poached Yates's pike swim on passion and it was reinforced by the allegations of embezzlement from the ACA coffers. There have also been many rumours of him having an affair with Yates's wife and as for the excuse about fishing for shad I actually emailed him to his guiding website a couple of years ago when he was advertising guided shad fishing days reminding him of the law regarding fishing for them, obviously I was ignored.
The daft thing is though, instead of the lame shad excuse, if he had said he was doing it as a protest against outdated counter productive restrictions placed on coarse fishing by the close season rules he would have got an article out of it and opened a debate which would have got allot of sympathy from many river anglers.
From a personal point of view I think the blokes 'a bad un' and as he is now a convicted criminal (do you get a criminal record for fishing out of season?), I hope he gets dropped by all the angling press.

It will be interesting to see what spin the bloggers put on this, I suppose the stance they take will be dictated by their business interests as usual.

I live 5minutes from the Dane.a river that I have fished for 60 years and thought sometimes I will go and trot a worm and pretend I am after trout and not chub and barbel in the close season.graham Elliott is right .they get enough hammer
In the season and should be left alone to spawn.it is cheating and letting your mates down

But then again Albert it's not a level playing field is it? Kyaks Boats anything apart from you and I cannot access Rivers,Why? To keep the like of you and me off the Rivers for the game anglers, that's the system. A very class system.

Apart from anything else it is breaking the law.we say enough about the visitors to our country on our rivers.how can we point a finger when we are breaking the law as it stands?

I'd have thought that being caught intentionally fishing for shad would be taken far more seriously than being caught fishing for barbel or chub in the close season.
shad are fully protected because they are an endangered species, whereas the intention of the coarse fishing close season on the river is only to stop us fishing for spawning fish!

To me it's a bit like admitting you were intending to shoot an otter instead of an out of season deer, and then claiming that you didn't know otters were a protected species...

Really Tim? If there was such concerns about spawning fish then why is there no closed season for still waters? As I said it really is an old law to protect the rights of game fishers.

errr, that was really the point of my post, that it's far more serious to be caught intending to catch an endangered species, rather than fishing for plentiful fish during what some consider the outdated close season...

look whether we agree with the close season or not the fact is we have one and he broke it and started spouting a rubbish excuse at the time but offered no defence when it got to court , plus if half the stories surfacing now then he got off lightly !!!!!!!!!!!

well , like said above, he a role model for younger anglers, but he got off lightly , but if it was a normal bloke like most of us on here, bet the judge would have fined us up to the max, is it some thing like £2,000, ?????? makes you wonder,

Excellent analogy Tim. I think he's hoping some people - potential punters? -will believe it was all a misunderstanding. Others will be fully aware that he was armed with deer stalking kit, after all nobody in their right mind would go hunting otters in the middle of the day!
