I don't think that's what Shaun or Paul intend it to be, James. Problem is when you attach yourselves with folk, who are so hell-bent on vilifying the otter and making it the main culprit for declining fish stocks, the project tends to be seen that way by those looking in. Having spoke to Paul...
Ah mate, you'll get used to questioning and criticism! Grow numb to it possibly Especially when presenting facts and figures. God 'elp you both. I wish you all the best with it.
Arrrr, but, that one pulls back on rod and line, Joe - so it's fine :D
I do like Paul's angle and how he's presenting himself, the project etc. But coupled with the divisive, horrendous guff coming out of certain anglers and groups, I do fear no good will come of it.
It's been part of the EU directive and catchment management plans for an extremely long time. Research conservation management and otters through google and you'll be bombarded with a mass of PDF files to read, stating laws and reasoning. Can't say I agree with EA flood management plans, bloody...
Garry doesn't tend to set his line spokes too deep so you can use the reel diameter to quickly work out the circumference as a ruff guide. Reels like the Speedia etc. not so.
Depending on reel size and depth of spool - somewhere in the region of 150-200 turns of the reel will give you upwards of 50yds. More than enough for static bait barbel fishing. I wouldn't personally put much more than that on for trotting, otherwise you risk it bedding in after a decent days...
Hiya Neil,
I wish I could give you an answer, but I'm an outsider now. The new generation should be able to clear things up for you. A general restocking policy was never seen as the answer anyhow, unless it helped the recovering population. I think the EA have adopted a policy of no...
Hiya Mike,
Would certainly second Peter's advice and hit the Red Lion stretch. Lovely beats there to go at. With the added bonus of the pub - should things get a little tuff. Friends use Brobury house for holidays too, which is downstream of the Red Lion day ticket water. Can't really go...
I haven't had the pleasure of visiting Calverton to date.. Hopefully one day! Nice to hear such upbeat, positive words about it's operations. A rare thing - I think even the Barbel Society don't support its actions these days, going on recent official statements. Which I find a shame.
I'm glad you feel there are bigger issues than the otter, Howard. I most certainly agree with you there, along with the need for further studies needed regarding predation. It is nigh on impossible to move forward without scientific research.
Cant really comment on the W.Avon as I only fish it a handful of times a year, so my opinion is void. The BS did have a very well known angler 2-3 years ago, who is a local, attend a Warwickshire regional launch meeting I set up for a talk, I asked him in front of the crowd then did he feel the...
Howard, the only satisfactory conclusion will come when there is unquestionable evidence otters are completely decimating barbel populations. Ever possible due to many anglers finding accepted scientific research results ambiguous? Look at how many long term studies have been ripped apart in...
Hiya Shaun, a very interesting few comments from Des, for me especially regarding the Severn, in recent years Des is quoted for saying the Severn is 'alive and well', 'who says the Severn is dead?' many many times. You can probably find them within 5 minutes on his timeline if you looked. This...
I'm no longer a member of the Barbel Society nor on its committee, Mark. I contacted them personally as I felt there would've been a little bit of conflict had I used the BS name with the questions I put across. I mentioned this to the lads some while back, but it fell on death ears, so I...
Hiya chaps, not been on here in a while. Hope you had a good run of fish before the season was out.
I believe the blog was always going to be devisive, and the nature of it was going to create a bit of a storm. Simply because you have a huge proportion of anglers who feel the data collected...
Hiya John, I just keep an eye on the weather and air temps to give me an idea as to how the river is behaving these days. Temps are irelevent really, rising numbers are favourable conditions for sure but you'll only spot the upwards trend if you're actually on a fishing session or by popping to...
