Thats a good point Trevor, what are we left with other than the trust???

Maybe its about time a new body was established, eh.

BS is a shadow of its former self due to most folks leaving out of dissapointment lately.

Tony,

What are the gripes of exiting anglers? Can all of us as anglers and conservationists afford to be apathetic regarding whats going on with some of our rivers??? We need to get behind some organisation surely...

With regard to your first point many people would find it difficult to assimilate angling with conservation, you only have to look at some of the behaviour displayed every summer weekend by the majority of 'anglers' on popular stretches and club pools to realise that to most 'anglers' fish are simply a commodity, this is particularly true of most match venues where the fishmongers who frequent them will vote with their feet should the owner or fishery manager decide to reduce the stocking level to a point where they might not be able to 'bag their 'ton' in a five hour match.
The only reason the general non angling public lets us get away with it is because fish are cold slimy things, if we were dealing with any other member of the animal kingdom we would be hung from the nearest lamp post.

You could be right with your second point but anyone who thinks any single species group will ever have that sort of clout is deluding themselves and until we have a joint body which is willing to speak out against the disgusting practice of over stocking match fisheries and lobby's government to impose stocking levels rather than the present group (the ACA) which actively sponsors matches which encourage the practice I for one will be keeping my money in my pocket.

As for the good old Barbel Society; at the risk of upsetting a couple of people I have to say that imo it's well past it's sell by date and in it's present guise it is little more than a vehicle for one man's ego. I would suggest it does little towards satisfying it's own aims and objectives and should be perhaps be investigated by trading standards.

John,
I think Ades last paragraph sums up the BS at the moment.
Some good can be done by smaller individual groups, be it for good causes or habitat improvement. On a larger scale I support the Countryside Alliance simply for its political clout in all things country sport wise, including angling. Did you know they have just stopped the canoeists from attaining the freedom to canoe anywhere in Wales.

Tony,

I don't think that shooting and fox hunting would sit well with me though...

Then you need to think about what fishing really is a bit more John. In the eyes of the antis its just the same whether we like it or not.

Bit of livebaiting for pike anyone?

'tis a bitter pill Tony but you're right. Funny thing is, i think fox hunting is cruel yet i don't mind sticking a hook in a fishes mouth, double standards and all!

Anyway, back on subject................

there both cruel, i never dispute that myself, but is it any more cruel than killing animals for food.

But i dont kill my prey...

Dont eat trout then? many of us do............. we cant get hung up on degrees of cruel and hope to get anywhere.

"Look Ye Also While Life Lasts". The guy who put those words inside the covers of his books had it right, he understood it all better than most.

Tony,

I just couldn't bring myself to support fox hunting though.

You dont have to support it, just realise that we are all in the same boat. I would never hunt a fox either myself but I would defend the right of those that do to do so.

I dont think that anglers are looked upon by the general public in the same way as fox hunters are.

Tony,

If we all joined the countryside alliance and started supporting peoples rights to go fox hunting then angling may go down the pan quicker than if we were not part of the alliance, I dont know the answer and you are right about strength in numbers but i would like to see that about angling only...
