Polarized sunglasses

It's worth looking at what a decent optician can offer. Some offer different lense colours and percentage darkness strengths I believe.
Yeah I've had some decent maui Jim's, expensive but they double up for everything I do outdoors. Ebay is a good starting point, and some opticians do them too

update just had a quote for a pair of Oakley
Half Jacket 2.0 XL or FLAK 2.0 XL Prizm Polarized varifocals to my prescription for £376 thats way under HALF the price I was quoted for maui Jim's !

but to me its still a blooming big chunk of pension money lol

I would say a chunk of the cost difference is probably in the lenses Gerry. Mauis will be their super thin glass where as oakleys are usually polycarbonate

Alternatively, buy a dirt-cheap pair of polarised clip-ons. In fact buy two or three pairs with different colour tints for varying conditions. It's a great addition to your prescription varifocal lenses.

I had 2 pairs of Oakley tinted (non polaroid) single vision prescription glasses made a few years back for shooting. The optician involved is the leading shooting glasses specialist in the U.K. At the time I asked him about Oakley Polaroids and he suggested that they were not in the same league as my Maui Jims.

re the clip on suggestion: Ive had 2 pairs of mainstream varifocal glasses in ‘Flexon‘ frames. The are available with very neat Polaroid clip on’s at an almost reasonable cost. They are great for everyday use and non challenging fishing applications.

I have a beautiful pair of Maui Jim local kines with the HT high transition lenses. Super thin glass with a subtle tint of amber/green designed for use in low light overcast conditions.

Took em down the cam this evening as the sun was going down and the lenses are unreal. In such conditions they brighten everything up and enhance colours. The gravel on the bottom of the shallows was quite stunning in different colours even in dusk low light which is exactly what I wanted from them. Looking forward to weather warming up some more and spotting some big fish on the backwaters.

I like those. What’s the fit like? I have a slim narrow face and generally find a lot of sunglasses just look huge on me.

I don’t know how to answer that Ben ….. they fit me just fine but check the different sizes out as each model has its own frame size to suit different people.

Gerry if you want a pair at a MUCH more reasonable price, just let me know
Hi Chris
thanks for the kind offer but I have decided to give up on the idea at my age wrong side of 75 I could spend out and then within a year my eyes change with the permanent chemo I am on for the remainder of my life
so think I may get some new rods instead to celebrate

A bit of a thread uplift here
Over 2 years ago i bought these glasses and in that time i doubt there has been many days where they haven’t been put on. I literally wear them everyday. Driving, fishing, walking, days out with the family, you name it they are on the vital leave home check list with keys wallet and watch. I flogged every pair of oakleys I own simply because there is no comparison. These glass lenses are in another league and polycarbonate anything else doesn’t even get near them.

The colour, transparency and transition can’t be rivaled along with the upper and lower coating that actually squints for you making even high transition lenses useful in bright sun which they were never bought for.

I’m on my 3rd set of nose rubbers and 2nd set of temple rubbers which Maui Jim supply to your house completely foc.
I’m so glad I went down this route. Some happy memories with my Maui jims shown below

I've got 3 pairs myself. Wouldn't want any other makes 👍

I think I’m due a new set for the upcoming season and I’m open to recommendations
No budget open cheque book
I’ve had a couple of pairs of cheap fishing brand ones which to be fair have been great but they don’t last being made to a budget
I’ve also got a number of pairs of Oakleys some polarized some not but despite the brilliant lenses they don’t shut light out very well round the frames which effects performance when focusing on the water.
I want something that sits close to the face, wide arms and deep lenses to close out as much light as possible.

I want nice optics with good definition, something that doesn’t effect colour too much so that things like orange fins are quick and easy to identify.
Low light level lenses ideally like amber as it’s when most of my observations take place (dawn/dusk)
Great scratch resistance is a must …. And the ability to replace the lenses would be even better but not essential. Cheap glasses always fail on the ability to withstand scratches I find.

So I’ve looked briefly at fortis vistas which from a rap around bulky frame perspective look perfect but im not sure what the lenses are like?? What’s the switchable lenses like do they work?
Are there others that are much better for my list of needs..? Go nuts open cheque book and hopefully I’ll get something really good.

That looks like a right lump of a pike there👍

Before you spend a lot of money I suggest going to an Optometrist (Optician) for a sight test. Once we get into our early 40's a condition called Presbyopia sets in which is loss of near vision and adaption of our eyes to adjust focus from near to far and far to near. Obviously the age at which this happens is variable but it might just save you having to change again after a while.

Then once you get to my age cataracts become an issue!

RICHARD - IGNORE THE ABOVE AS I JUST NOTICED THIS THREAD WAS STARTED 2YRS AGO (insert slap head emoji)

Maui Jim's were originally aimed at golfers, a lot of the designs are available with a small reading segment in the bottom of the lens.... Perfect for us older farts who need a bit of help up close...
