Hardy marksman supero barbel rods.....

The line rating probably relates to the true test breaking strain not the line manufacturers declared breaking strain. When you consider that many so called 8lb lines actually have a breaking strain close to 12lb the a line rating of 6-12lb for an avon makes a bit more sense.
Hi Joe. I took notes from the superoxide catalogue before Pure took it down and made a list. Couldn't check it but here it is.
It is the new model that replaced the original hardy specialist avon, float etc

Like many old tackle, many people think the supero rods are not as good as the original ones.
I met and discussed with dave coster the difference between the originals and the supero. He confirmed that cheaper rings were used on the same blanks, less of course the stoppers. He confirmed it in an article published last year on Thomas Turner Web site and I belive its still there.

What does the supero mean?
You see it on some and not others
Hi Richard. Reading dave costers article and having discussed the subject with him when I meet him about 2 years ago, he was given the job of re vamping the specimen range which had been out for about 5 years . The supero's were sold along side..The rings formerly used were said to be soon discontinued so he specc'd slightly cheaper alternative ones. His full article is on Thomas Turner website( their sponsor inter alia fishing magic web site.

It's a 12ft 3 piece rod. It has a carrier section for the quiver tips. The rod is very slim and powerful and could be used to trot a float, but it certainely isn't as lightweight as a designated float rod for that purpose. The rods are so well made and finnished they are nice just to look at!
A few pictures for you Alec....

Here you go Ian. I got this as I had the specimen. I also have the brochure of 2009 but that will overload the system I think as its 32 pages so anyone interested please pm me so I can send to their email. I tried Bobco where I bought my extr feeder at 50% off list but they would not budge an inch on the list price of the barbel. As to value of yours if you were to sell, my best guess would be 2-3 times original list. Not kidding. Truly unique and irreplaceable.

I fish Hardy Superos.

My almost daily user is the 11’6” Avon of which I have a pair.

I also have the 11ft Avon and the 12ft barbel in 3piece with the Avon and quiver tops.

For float fishing I have the full supero range from 11’10, 13, 14 and 15ft.

I have a bit of a Hardy problem.
is this of interest? The only Hardy items I have now is a beautiful polartec jacket. I bought this new about 3 years ago, wore once socially(ha) and its X large. Very rare I believe. May dispose of one day soon.

thats true too Rob.
I went to a house in Tunbridge well about 6 years ago, to collect a rod my pal had bought, in the guys garage he had a load of Hardy gear which he had bought form a collapsed tackle dealer. Stupidly the only thing I bought for myself was the extending landing net handle. It was staggering, same colour as the rods and with a leather wound handle. Truly a wonderous thing to behold. Took it to a bank once, thought of grit getting down the lengths and chewing the paint so sold it, very very regretfully! All I have left is my jacket, which people say when I show it to them , "Where in god's name did you get that? Ha.

Really kind to ask, but at 6ft 3” I’m more an XXL sized angler!

I love the Hardy S. 14 foot float. It’s my go-to trotting rod for chub and barbel on both D.Stour and HAvon.
Subjective I know, but it retains both sensitivity and power,…. I had a dabble with the 15 footer but preferred the 14’ for some reason.

That's the great thing about fishing. There are more than enough alternatives in almost everything to keep as all happy.

One thing I don’t really like about the hardy rod is the reel seat, it’s high quality and nice, but holding a metal in your hand during the winter is not a really pleasant experience

Thanks for that Alec 😎👍.

Regarding the difference between the original specialist and the supero rods, as far as I can see, the superos have a slightly different shade of green, they have fuji black alconite guides replacing the fuji S I C guides (I think the fuji S I C guides are still available). The reel holder and handle cap are gold rather than silver on the specialist. The superos don't have the ferrule stops and the bag has velcro straps rather than cord on the specialists. Oh, the superos have darker whipping and are finnished with gold tippets.

Here's a video of Coster talking about the supero rods....

I wondered about the rings too .Perhaps they continued with the fuji sic as I have had later made rods with them. I suspect it came down to Pure/F, in usual USA way saying, relaunch ,save some money, use same blanks and get improved margins so the supero was born. I would still like to know which top section, ie from which feeder they used on the barbel. Puzzling me!
I know Hardy went to the SUHO corporation for the blanks, as they made their fly rods at the time. When YW young decided to compete on coarse rods too, they went to them also and got the blanks for what I call their MK 1 range, ie wooden reels seat. John Wilson and Bruce Vaughan were the consultants. I had a number and excellent blanks they were too but with all the timber and wedges needed to get a reel to fit, it got a bit heavy! I had prototypes of theirs . A heavy feeder and a pike no less, but they didnt launch those. I had a collection on a stand.I sold them early covid lockdown days. Ho ho.

I don't think they carried on using the fuji S I C's, all the supero rods have black alconites, which are high quality giudes anyhow.

The barbel rod I have has a short carrier section which fits onto the middle section and the quiver sections fit into that, kind'a making it a 4 section rod.
I don't think it's a generic section used on the feeder rods.

I think maybe now I was wrong it was based on the 12 specimen. It's likely to be an amagum of floats / feeders but which. You describing it a slim trottable rules out the spec. That today would be a power float maybe.

Worth you reading costers article on Thomas tuner site. Illuminating.

I wonder who got you that DT.?

I bought some from a closing down tackle shop and kept 2 and sold, at same price one to you and Roger if I remember.
You would get £200 more each now 🤣
