Floodwater rods.

I thought the top recommended weight was about 5oz For a P1 blank ?

If so not a rod I would consider for somewhere like Tidal Trent, Flood rod or Pike fishing.

Thought it was developed as a very light beach rod.

May well be wrong though.

Bespoke blank designed by Harrison’s for Dave Lumb. Based on a Ballista but with thicker walls and a stiffer tip.
They are designed as a pike fishing tool which is what I wanted...but for the real heavy water they maybe also be good option.

Harrison's do a P1 beachcaster, but Dave Lumb also does a pike rod on a Harrison blank known as the P1 (12" 2.75lb TC). Generally considered the best all-round pike rod money can buy.

They will definitely do the job in floodwater without a doubt Alan. You have spent wisely. Fantastic rods...use mine mainly for drifter fishing which is great fun. My piking season starts next week, can't wait.

Harrison do a P1, P2 and P3 Beachcaster blanks 13.5 feet or so under the Torrix badge. P1 'Estuary', P2 'General' and P3 'Tournament' blanks. Still got a P1 and P2 blanks. Don't confuse them with Dave's P Predator series.

They will cast heavy feeders and leads no issue at all, and the playing action is lovely. The tips won’t be the best for registering bites as they are quite stiff compared with a dedicated barbel rod. Awesome pike rods.
Floodwater barbel fishing he said joe. I don’t think the sensitivity of the tips is going to matter in the slightest.
I think they could be excellent for the job. Dave said the P2 also doubles up as a cracking heavy water barbel rod.

Easy to do Bob if they are both called P1's.
😁

I used to have a DLST P1 standard build on duplon. I know people rave about this rod, but I couldn't get on with it. Sort of an all round rod for piking, but not specialist enough for my applications. ie. Big tough skinned pike baits...full big trout and mackeral etc. I rate Dave's P3 and BB1's though, which I've had for over 20 years, and wouldn't sell.

P1's should be OK for barbel though.

I've been doing some more research, and what with the new tier 4 restrictions, it doesn't look like I'll be able to go a look at any rods for the foreseeable future. I'm due a shoulder operation in January, so it'll be some time before I can use a new rod. So I may go down the custom route. I pretty much know how I'd like a rod to be built, rings, reel seat, handle, so on. I'd just like to know what the difference is between the 2.75lb 12' Torrix and the 2.75 13' Chimera 4 ?? Because if that's the route I go down, the choice of blank is probably between those two.

Apart from being a foot longer, the chimera 4, is stiffer in the butt. Its a great rod that can do anything the Trent can throw at it. Its also very forgiving when you have a big Barbel under the tip, giving everything.

The big difference is the torrix 2.75 is a carp blank that can be rung up for heavy water barbel fishing and the chimera 4 is and was designed from scratch to be a heavy water barbel blank. At 13ft it will be ideal for big tidal rivers in spate but it may be a bit cumbersome for tackling tighter swims on smaller rivers in spate.
I would chose the C4 over the Torrix any day of the week for the TT but I’d choose a 12 or even 11 footer where I need the power but perhaps don’t need quite the casting distance.

Interesting guys and thanks. I manage on the Dove with my Greys when there is a bit on it, but have felt slightly under gunned on the Trent on the odd occasion I've needed to use a big feeder. I don't own or want lots of Barbel rods, so I'll be trying to cover most bases with some floodwater rods and my Greys.

Well after a lot of deliberation I've gone and bought myself these in 2.75 TC.

I didn't go down the custom route simply because I don't know enough about the blanks that are available. I could have ordered something I'd believe to be what I wanted and had it made the way I wanted, but if it turned up and wasn't how I thought it'd be, I'd be mortified and potentially have rods on my hands that would be difficult to move on if I didn't like them. So after reading as much as possible about the Basia's, I've plumped for them.

On quick inspection, they are very nice, even the flatlock handle which I wasn't too sure about. The finish is very similar to my Greys (Which I really like) The handle length isn't overly long, and they have nice feel in the hand. Can't say more about them at the moment because I'm still in a sling.

I'll be teaming them up with Shimano X-areo 6000s, but they haven't arrived yet.
