Fish Retention

Why are you so aggressive John? If you dislike forums so much why do you keep coming back on them and tormenting yourself all the time?
You could try fishing somewhere away from the same couple of swims on the Goyt and get a bit more perspective on the world.

Hi Adrian
don't worry about my Goyt, Severn and trent fishing just get out there and do a little fishing bud.
Who is aggressive? Who said I dont like forums? one hell of a crystal ball
See you on the Severn this week if your about?
thanks for your input into this thread much appreciated.
John;)

No if at all possible it is better to keep the barbel in the landing net rather than swapping it around other devices, it cuts down stress for the fish and of course keeps it out of the water to a minimum. It probably makes sense to carefully weigh the fish in the net if you have a suitable net such as a large oval rather than a sling.
Common sense I would have thought, and as I said barbel are not as robust as carp, and it does seem that some on here have transferred their carp handling ways to barbel.
Keep it simple stupid
K.I.S.S. :)

Weigh it in a landing net  this just keeps getting better! Thats the worst bit of advice since this thread started.

very true simon and if they were spawning i wouldn't be fishing for them!!
especially the big females who will be at their lower weight's and lesser condition than the horny males.
my post was general about condition's and i don't say fish for them while they are spawning.(i'm talking about after spawning when they've done they're bit and need time to recover and recondition)

Hi John, a good reasoned reply, thats more like it !! i was more referring to times of very low flow and Oxygen levels mate, Barbel are very prone to bellying up after capture in these conditions hence IMO they are best left alone, but its amazing how many people who spout all the Fish safety retoric are still happy to carry on fishing for them knowing that problems are likely, thats why my mate found it necessary to shut the fishery, because he couldn't rely on members to use their common sense and leave alone unless they were forced to.
My post wasn't meant as a dig at you personally but your post did kind of illustrate an issue i have a bit of a Bee in my bonnet about ;)

no problem here simon and agree with your sentiment's,we can all learn from one another etc.
as i said in previous post's my comment's are aimed at those not in the know and most of the stuff i preach is old hand information i've picked up from this very site:)
nice to have a debate without any personal insult's etc(you southern softie:D)

''Southern Softie '' . Don't call him that John , h'es as northern as beef dripping and Tetleys! He has just got stuck down sarf for some reason ,poor lad :D

oh dear looks like i've stoked another fire:eek:

he's not one of them tight yorkshiremen is he:D

Barbel are not as robust as carp..........

Does this mean we need a sliding scale of fish treatment depending on their "robustness" rating, or would it be better to treat all fish in the optimum manner?

I think you know what I mean, carp can survive for long periods out of water barbel cannot. Example: Carp can stay alive for several hours just wrapped in a wet cloth, Carp can live in very low oxygen levels Barbel need higher levels of oxygen, hence any restrictions placed on barbel obtaining the required oxygen levels required could prove fatal.

Anyway more grist to the mill for you

Your attitude is aggressive John, typified by the first two questions in your post above (and I've still got the pm's from your last appearance where you were going to 'look me up' or 'track me down') you don't like many people who post, ergo you don't like forums.
You're right about the fishing though, I should get out a bit more, trouble is most of the places I like to go have been under 15 foot of floodwater for weeks.
If you see me on the Severn in the next couple of weeks you're poaching. My syndicate is very fussy about who we let in and your name, along with a few others, has a permanent black ball against it. And you will never find me on 'barbel alley', far to many know it all Norveners down there.

Well fin damage for starters, i really didn't think i'd have to point that one out.

Well yes that is a possibility but the Barbel is enclosed in a fish friendly mesh, . I have had just one occasion where a Barbel dorsal did snag my net on landing, a snip of the net was all that was needed to free it.

I actually do use a sling to weigh better fish, but not really convinced a sling is much of an improvement on a good quality safe net.

No need for an attitude Simon, let's keep it civil.

What an interesting thread.

Have you reached any conclusions of how you will handle/retain that monster yet Richard.???

Or might it depend on the situation you find yourself in at the time regarding, others available nearby, condition of water in front of you, type of bankside you are on, time of day or night. etc etc.

Graham

was that a pop at Norveners in general Adrian

It was and Adrian will do at every chance he gets

Whats even worse is you may be a townie LOL

What syndicate do i need to avoid ? Didnt know barbel fishing had syndicates as you can fish some great places on the club waters Just ask Phil Smith ;)

Adrian, stop having a go at me and just go fishing....if you want to have a snipe pm me like it says you should not blast hot air on here Ok matey?

I don't mind Notherners having a go at me, but I have Mr Lush from Oxford!! giving ma a hard time...

Giving you a hard time ?! Blimey you must be a sensitive soul

Fightin talk ? surely you can do better than that ;)

Attitude ? just responding in a manner your posts invite, banter, debate call it what you like but PLEASE don't start bleating :D

So much conflicting advice on how to retain and weigh barbel. Why don't we take a leaf out of the golden era of our forefathers and simply knock everything we catch on the head? No need for keepnets or sacks except to hold the cans of special brew in.
