Drennan twistlock won't lock!

Steve Reed

Senior Member
I have a relatively new Drennan twistlock 3m landing net pole. Just recently it has stopped locking. I have taken it apart and cleaned the inside of the tube but no luck. I suspect that I am not the first to have this problem. Any ideas anyone?

Cheers.

Quite a common problem from what I have heard, there was a way of aruditeing the locking nut on the bottom that someone told me about but not sure as I have never had to do it, someone on here may know what I mean though?

I am an expert on this ! I spoke to drennan on Monday, they said clean with wd40 or similar. They also said never remove the end cap, always access the twistlock by removing the inner pole from the top end. I had already removed and lost the cap and then the twistlock also came off and was lost. Drennan have replaced the lost parts FOC which was good of them. If the mechanism is clean, then adjust it so it only just fits back in the outer pole and then try to lock it, with a bit of fiddling you should get it working again.

The end cap fell of mine on the first trip out! I found it in the bottom of the rod holdall. I have fiddled around as suggested and got it to work again. I think the threaded collar at the bottom of the inner pole had locked at the top of the thread. Unscrewing a few turns seems to work. Not sure if this is a permanent solution.

I've had 2 both have done the very same thing.... I have taken to wrapping some electrical tape around the bung to give it a slightly wider circumference. It seems to have worked as I think the bung didnt have any purchase on the outside pole..

Give the plastic widget a rub with some emery cloth to increase the friction.

My widget for my SS landing net handle broke on Tuesday, i contacted Drennan on Wednesday, a new one was delivered via the post today. Seems to be made from a differrent plastic, hopfully it should resist my hamfists....

Thankyou Drennan, excellent service.

I had this problem aswell, a component on the plastic bush broke.
Great service from Drennan supplying a replacement plastic bush.
Stoping the elements getting in the bottom of the handle where the screw cap is should stop any future aggro.

Even though good service is what we have come to expect from Drennan. I think paying 50 notes for a landing net handle it should stand the test of time.

Had mine a year now and it's been fine but you guys are getting me worried.

Pete.

Had mine a year now. The only problem was when I overtightened. I know that I have a pathalogical need to get things just that little bit tighter. That is exactly what caused the problem and now I'm aware of it I've not had any bother since.

Same issue with mine, twice, sorted easily enough but the next one I buy will be a Chris Brown. Got to say Drennan hooks, floats, line and luggage are first class and the ss handle was my first disappointing buy from them.

I've had mine about 5 years and it as locked up on me a few times and I've had to get my son to grip one end while I twist the other. This works fine but I think one day it'll get stuck fast and I won't be able to get it loose.
I do think that instead of a twist lock this pole would be the best on the market if the twist lock was changed for the cam lock type fitting like on the power stretch then it would never lock up. Drennan would not have to keep suppling spare bits and I can't see it being to expensive to do.

The tales of good customer service reported here are obviously good news but there is another side to the coin. I have purchased and used Drennan rods for over 20 years and always sang thier praises (I own more than a dozen of thier rods currently) but recent events have clouded my opinion of them as a company. When fishing recently the top 2 inches broke off the 12ft 2lbtc Power barbel I was using, I returned it to the shop and also phoned Drennan who said their rep would take a look when he was next in the shop. The rep rep took a look, turned his nose up and said it had to be from abuse or damage, none of which I was aware of and that was that. If I wanted a replacement tip I would have to pay full whack for it. Having owned over 30 Drennan rods in the past I thought this was pretty shabby and definitely won`t be buying another.

Paid £39.99 for mine and whilst I agree that if you don't over tighten them you have no problems (I haven't had a problem yet). I also agree that a so called quality product from a so called quality company should not be have so many problems, and considering that this is not a new issue it should have been resolved a long time ago!

Just print "do not overtighten, we really mean it" on it. Job's a good 'un. Drennan can pay my consultancy fee in Super Specialist Twistlock landing net handles because I love them. I'd happily have a few for my various different set ups/holdalls.

If anyone out there is so brassed off with their Drennan handle that they don't intend to use it, feel free to send it to me. I'll even pay postage despite doing you a favour in taking the useless piece of junk off your hands.

Hi Steve,

I have the same landing net pole and have suffered similar problems. A couple of things to try! If you haven't already unscrew the locking device at the end of the inner pole and give it a thorough clean. Lots of graphite dust tends to collect on it.

On my pole the fault can be intermitent and not work one outing but work the next. If yours is the same as mine and does lock in the shortest position then try just releasing the locking and slide the pole down the inner keeping it almost locked until you get to the required new locking spot and then tighten up again.

Cheers,

John

A mate and I both have this handle but the piece that splays out at the bottom of the inner pole is not the same on both handles so the fix for one pole may not be the fix for another.
