Chub

well done on your p.b Lewis and to PJ, just out of interest did you catch fish throughout the day or did they come at dusk?

Neil

Cheers guys, as has been said, my 6.11 was enormous and must at peak weight be a big 7, it was quite empty and should come out nearer to end of the season as a good 7lb'er I'd have thought.

My Chub set up is 6lb line straight through with a large 4 hook on the end, I use a float stop with a korum weight swivel which has a small bomb lead to give me a running rig. The rod is a 1.25 JW quivver.
Bait is either cheesepaste (blue danish/mature chedder mix, using shortcrust pastry as the base, and a little tip is to put in red dye to make a more visual bait. Worms and Spicy prawn boilies are my change baits.
I am no expert, but I have found that the quieter I am on the bankside, the better my catch return is, I now creep silently as possible into the swim and if I make to much disturbance, I throw in a couple of freebies and return an hour later for another attempt.
Hoping for a few chub next week when the water temp has risen a little. Well done to the snow captures, I would have liked to have tried, but my 2 wheel drive car would not have coped in the icey conditions last week!

well done on the pb lewis, pity there aint that kind of chub fishing up here, what with the numbers of big fish.

£2.75 a pint, bloody hell, dosent your tackle shop do you any deals???:)

hi john.i use a running ledger and quiver tip rod.if near snags i use 8lb to the hook.another ploy is a swan shot 18 inches from the hook .a drennan stop for the ledger to rest on.the hook i use is a esp t raptor in size 10.it is a good hook that will hold big barbel[8 plus]i put the hooks under glass and throw the bad ones out.another hook for the knot is the korum s4 which is seamless .hoe this is of use.

ESP Raptor hooks for chub:eek:.
Albert how big do the chub go where you fish?;)

ESP Raptors, they're my usual carp hook:rolleyes:,. Had them to low thirties on a size 10.

My preference is Drennan Super Specialist (not the barbel ones) and Carbon Specimen.... Just started using Kamasan 918's I think.

I don't hair rig baits for chub and they don't pull back that hard.
IMO of course:rolleyes:.
Though if I was to hair rig for them I'd opt for Korum S3's Knotless Knot hooks. They can cope with double figure tench, so no chub should prove to problematic for them.:)

i colin.i fish the small river dane in cheshire.i have fished this river for 58 yrs.this season i have had among others 3 chub over 5lb the best going 5/4.i can tell you they are very good fish for this river.my best barbel from the dane is 8lb 12ozs.i have had 4 over 8lb .all landed on the size 10 raptor.there is a bad snag in the swim and i have found this hook ideal.the fish mentioned were all caught on the hair rig with a 5 mm gap to the hook.bait was the awsome halibut pellet.

Nice one Graham. Still waiting for my first chub (bite) since Xmas Day!
Out for two days from tomorrow mixing pike and chub (day/evening).
Must get something!

chub hooks

Hi Albert.
I tend to agree with Colin on hook patterns. I use either drennan super specialist's or kamasan B980's usually with the barb crimped down unless I'm using worm then will leave the barb alone. But saying that I'm not using a hair and mostly using bread flake. I have had barbel over 9lb on these hook's and also witnessed a 11.

I have also thought about using a lighter pattern still because surely the lighter the hook the better the presentation but have shelfed the idea as I think I'd wory to much about hooking barbel and having a good one straighten the hook.

hi paul,i use the drennans as well.in short the last 151 fish i have landed ie the 10s raptor.it suits my style.hooks are two a penny and you can take your pick

Caught this lovely looking fish from the Ribble this afternoon, on the ever reliable cheesepaste.
