    Cat among the pigeons!

I used braid in the old days for barbel as a hook link, but for me it was the lack of stretch that made me stop. I had too many of the thumping bites and on picking up the rod having the line part at the hook-link. I use nylon now all the time and it far more reliable. I can also get a soft...

    Cat among the pigeons!

Gerry. Can I ask, why you think barbed hooks are forbidden on all commercial waters?

    Cat among the pigeons!

I find it strange that some folk get all uptight and aggressive when you ask them WHY they are doing something? Not all, but some. After all, this is a forum for ideas and information, as well as a bit of banter isn't it? Mike has it right. Some use a rig that brings its own complications...

    Best boilies.

Alex. Guy's Sometimes I take so many hook baits I even confuse myself. Mini boilies, small and large pellets, big boilies, bread, luncheon meat, maggots, and always hemp. I did find a sausage flavour very good, but like a fool run out some weeks ago while carp fishing.

    Cat among the pigeons!

Hook links and barbel. Been reading some recent barbel articles where the writers all seem to be following the carp anglers trend for braided hook links. I believe that a good soft nylon ( extra limp ) is a good as anything. I say that as a fisherman who thinks regardless of what you use...

    Best boilies.

Over the years what boilies would you say has been the most successful for the barbel angler. Someone told me the ones from Dynamite The Source? Whats been your favourite, one you would not go barbel fishing without?

    My new friend Bob.

Just sent a payment to Bob. Is he 100% reliable, or likely to be off with my money to Thailand shacked up with a ladyboy for the foreseeable future?:D Seriously, it is nice how this forum works in so many ways. People make friends, get advice from others on all aspects of barbel...

    Decided thanks where to buy?

Graham. Its amazing but your right, I'm thinking the rod I need is a 1.75 or even 2lb. As long as i can feel perch, bream and big chub I'll pick up along the way, I'll be happy. But the beat I'm fishing has some very big barbel, over 17lb for sure. Thanks all again.

    Decided thanks where to buy?

So I'm going for the Torrix 1.75lb 11'. Does anyone know where I can buy one, or do I have to have one built? Fosters want 6 weeks £239. Too long, I cannot wait? Thanks to all for the helpful advice, hope you don't think I've waisted anyones time? Richard.

    Rod difference Harrison

Anthony. Is this the same rod being sold by Dave's tackle as the Harrison s/u Avon, do you think? 1.10oz cannot be too many around can there? I do like the look of it to be honest. I'm not able to link, sorry rather dumb on that. But please look for me if you would. Thanks again.;)

    Rod difference Harrison

Yep thanks Graham. But I'm still interested in the difference between the two rods Chimera/Torrix. And will both take 8/10lb line? Anyone please?

    Rod difference Harrison

Thanks Anthony. But it sounds just too heavy 1.75lb? Are you saying it's lighter than 1.75lb Thanks anyway, grateful and food for thought.

    Rod difference Harrison

Hi Guys. Could one of you builders, or an owner give me some basic information, re a rod I'm looking at? I'm after a bit of an all round roving rod. Something I can use with 6lb line for perch, but up to 10lb in a push for free-lining for barbel. The two rods I've short listed are both...

    Shimano Aero Ci4 4000

Daiwa Theory SP reel, I have two and they are 4000 size but designed for big fish in the gearing and retreive. Can I suggest you look it up on Google and have a good read about them. The clutch is faultless and it has a quick drag that I like. Ive seen them as low as £125 recently, they are...

    how;s your season so far

Funny but most people I speak to fishing the Trent (daytime) are finding it very hard going. Two reasons. One. its exceptionally clear and low. Two, some think the fish have not moved into the prime lies as yet, still recovering in the shallows after spawning, and re-spawning. To date I've not...

    Fish spotting glasses

Ive got two sets from Optilabs. You will find cheaper, but I doubt better quality. Most game, fly fishers know about them. My fist pair over 15 years ago were over £150, my recent £200. They are prescriptions however, and have a range of frames. I have, grey and brown. The grey are great for...

Drennan Acolyte plus 13ft....powerful enough for barbel?

My last word would be that trotting for barbel is a very niche method ( I'd guess less than 10% of barbel anglers do it as a main method) By that I mean you're fishing for a very big powerful fish, in often very fast water, on a method really designed for smaller fish. So for me it's all about...

Drennan Acolyte plus 13ft....powerful enough for barbel?

If you can buy one for that, it's a no brainer. I paid new £200 but it's worth every penny. The Daiwa was £100 more. I don't know where you have seen it at that price, but be a bit careful if it's Ebay. I've been told that stuff from China may not be what it seems?

    What line for trotting ?

Jon. Have to disagree but respect your opinion. I always use a hook link weaker than the mainline. It's something I've always done after being showed it my a match angler that got me started in fishing. Recently I had another think about it, but came up with the view I was correct. One/If...
