Alec, I have two Peregrine rods and they are not made to spend their lives in a display cabinet! Get a reel on it and enjoy it.... because if you don't, somebody else eventually will.

Sometimes there's a deep channel with a rocky drop-off. Other times you can be fishing from the top of a high bank (nowhere suitable at water level) and keeping your lines above any bankside vegetation. If fishing two rods (one upstream and one down) it reduces the chances of a fish crossing...

If you are happy with the way a club has been run for years and trust the committee, I think that whilst a big increase comes as a shock (if you don't keep up with meeting minutes etc) you will probably find it's justified.
When you say Goretex leaks, have you actually done a test with a jacket fastened up over a pair of step ladders and sprayed it with a hosepipe? As you will no doubt be aware (some may not) once a jacket loses its repellency or the pores get blocked with dirt, the jacket is no longer breathable...
