    Best under £100 polarised glasses

Fortis, esp and fox glasses are all good and cheap. I've also owned the silly priced ones ie Bolle and costas. Really not worth the extra as the difference in polarisation is negligible. I would say the only real difference is the amount of swearing when you step on and shatter a pair.

    The price of hemp!

That and health food industry among other things. The last consistently good hemp I purchased was bartholomews brand. Whether they get quality supplies year after year is another matter.

    Sweet or Savoury

Interesting take Richard. I have to say the few times I have hooked barbel in less than ideal conditions has been on maggots and worms intended for other species, food for thought ( pun possibly intended) Obviously flavours are more than smelling like it says on the label but how they transmit...

    Sweet or Savoury

By weaker, do you mean less flavoured? What is your reasoning behind that?

    Rod recommendation

Spinning rods with an appropriate action are worth a look. There will certainly be more to choose from in the shorter lengths.

    Short rods

I had a three piece yateley angling barbel stalking rod once and it was lovely apart from the fact it didn't suit a lot of my angling. Where short rods failed to deliver for me is that most of my fishing is swinging the bait out and gently lowering the rig in. 9 foot is just too short for this...

"Mortimer & Whitehouse: Gone Fishing" New Series

Those carp looked a bit Galician to me. Being that it was in Surrey could well be a distinct possibility.

    Must read Barbel books.

Avon Days and Stour Ways is indeed an excellent book. Nick Gile's The Nature Of Barbel is the first book I would recommend. especially for furthering anyone's knowledge of Barbel.

Done. I've lurked in and out of this forum since near the start. I would be happy to pay for a moderate yearly subscription to gain access to the forum and help fund admin costs.

    Cork handle protection?

No ill effect as of yet from Danish oil but it is a microporous coating that should allow the Cork to breathe. I would be very surprised if u-40 cork sealer is not microporous too but worth checking.

    Cork handle protection?

I gave my Cork handles a spruce up with Danish oil which gives the Cork a lovely warm colour. Cleaned first, masking taped the fittings and two coats of oil applied thinly with lint free cloth.

    You Tube

Another vote for the John Timmerman episodes. A real grafter and hunter. I feel knackered after every watch.

Thoughts on Barbel wising up to rigs

To throw something else into the mix, do you think some individual barbel are harder to catch than others. I know some individual carp have an innate ability from birth at not visiting the bank as much as others.

Thoughts on Barbel wising up to rigs

I do remember you mate. Still a bailiff on there so dip in and out while fishing other places. Glad you're getting amongst them.

Thoughts on Barbel wising up to rigs

Half of the rigs carp anglers use are to solve the problem that they created in the first place ie mass baiting with particle sized baits that are used all of the time especially with the advent of the spomb again used all of the time. It is interesting to see the increase in catches from two...

    Best Barbel Books

Avon days and stour ways is ace, a very well written book with many good stories told. The nature of barbel is a great insight into the life of barbel, again well written. Would recommend both highly.
