What youngs pin ?

Looking for an allrounder

Touch of float work touch of ledger touch of free lining.

looking for advise on diameter and width recommends, would like to under stand why also if I can :)

I am not the best with a pin still learning but loving it, won’t be fishing massive flows with it also.

Using it for roach trotting through to chub, same when ledgering.

I will buy second hand so can be an old or new model.

Reasons for a young my godfather used to use them he loved them and is no longer with us so I want to get my self one as a nod and is nostalgic for me :).

Will be paired with a one pound Avon - tench float rod - Torix 1.5 etc you get the gist.

Again happy to be pointed in the right direction in terms of size for what I want to do but won’t be going on heavy rods.

Not sure if it helps I don’t have shovel hands but am 6.3 tall bloke with sizable hands 🤣
 
I would recommend the Youngs RS.
Without going measuring it I think the width of the line lay is about an inch and so because of that and the machined out line lays you very rarely ever get line stick, even after playing a larger powerful fish.
The reel has an adjustable drag tensioner on the backplate which you might find handy in more powerful flows if legering. I never use it, but it is always there just incase it's needed.
The ratchet lever is on the top rim of the backplate. Some people arn't to keen on it because it is quite stiff, but I find it ok.
The reel is excelent for wally casting also.
I use mine for all comers, mostly chub and barbel since they are usually my target species.

How do you find engaging the ratchet on the RS? I nearly bought one last year, but was put off by a few comments on a couple of FB pages, where owners claimed it was really stiff and a 2 handed affair to engage it?

The new Youngs 4” Heritage limited edition looks nice. I prefer 4” pins and if I was currently in the market, I’d consider buying one.
 
Personally I would go for John Wilson/jw young heritage pin, it is basically purist ii, but lighter. The diameter is good for trotting and the width is not too narrow, I would say this is a true all rounder pin.

The new limited heritage pin is nice, I like the spool diameter and the width, but I am currently passionate about the true pin…

Trudex is also nice, especially for trotting. The price of second hand trudex 2 is almost same the trudex 3, and it is a true pin, but it has a narrow spool, may not suitable for heavy line.

I have no issue with it, I actually prefer it to be stiffer.
The drag lever on the BJ reels is in virtually the same spot and for me it's way too slack. I often catch it and it flicks on very easy. The actual ratchet itself is also to slack imo.
I use 4inch reels myself, but usually opt for a 4 1/2 or 4 1/4 inch.

Depending on what you decide I may be able to help as I have quite a few pins to sell including J W young Tru Pin, Trudex 2 ( lost the line guard) and a Trudex 3 plus many more.
As most of my rods are always set up the pins I tend to use JW Young BJ on the various trotting rods, Ray Walton pins on rods where flow is not too fast and Pete Readings for slightly faster flows.

I really like the position of it on the BJ and the fact that it moves very easily.
My pin only has 1 task though and that’s trotting for barbel and as soon as I strike I just slide my thumb backwards straight across that back plate knowing the ratchet is going on straight away
I don’t think I’d get on with the RS as well Personally

Yes, we all have our preferences, to be honest I get on with all of them but do have a preference.
My own personal favourite type of ratchet knob is the straight up and down button type positioned below the reel foot. I have a number of reels with that type of ratchet button. An example of a quite modern reel with the ratchet button which I mean and one that you will most likey be familiar with is the greys bewick.
 
Thanks all, a few people are contributing now for my birthday 🎁 I’m always moaned at with the what do you want and I say nothing 🤣 I do like the look the of the limited addition heritage tbh !
 
When masterline owned the youngs name Mill tackle actually machined the reels and their parts before sending them to masterline youngs. Masterline youngs then assembled the reels. Garry used to assemble the first 25 or more of a new range (such as the atom reels) that's why the earlier numbers are more sought after....because Garry assembled them.

I may well be wrong, but It wouldn't surprise me if mill tackle still actually machine the reels and the new owners of the youngs name assemble the reels as did masterline youngs.

Currently as I may of mentioned, I'm saving up for a Chris Lythe pin, he's doing me a smallish sized Roach pin, which will be perfect for trotting & the lighter side if legering.(with removable line guards)

Trudex ii is a great pin, great for trotting and ledgering.

I really like the multi ratchet on wensum reel, simple and effective. Although the pin itself isn’t perfect, does not spin as freely as I like (30-40s?) and slightly wobbling, seems a common problem.
 
Yeah, my Milltackle Barbel Catcher has an adjustable ratchet. It's a top all rounder. But obviously a redundant feature on a pin to be solely used for trotting.
