Tidal trent.

Because they are better and more forgiving. Just chucked out.......

each to their own

how many anglers have the 'jig' necessary to put a blank under compression under different loads to arrange ring placement? - none i guess because you need a bloody big wall space ,lol

be honest most anglers know sweet fa about the pros and cons of ring selection/sizing because its a science

i know a few custom builders and titanium rings are the new 'want' because its the new 'want'

now if you want to understand a totally different concept in rod rings especially smaller and more rings then Kev Baines at Anglers Workshop is the man and he produces some superb rods that will truly shock you

i am a big fan of the Fuji Low Rider rings - i actually have a spomb rod i designed with these rings and yes, i set up a homemade jig and weighed mini and medium spombs with multiple wet mixes to get it right

its actually built on a Free Spirit Marker Rod blank!!

its optimum was for the mini spomb - medium spomb was a short range compromise

the distances achievable using 30lb Powerpro and no leader are staggering

and to prove its not all talk - you can visit me and try the rod on water

and no, its going to remain a one off as i have no interest in marketing any rods as life is too short

yes, you can customise handle length - measure from x to y etc - but off the shelf rods suit me as i guess i'm just average?

handle diameter - i have small hands and I've never found a handle too thick, lol

but here i will ask a critical question

why is it that its carp and barbel rods that have so much customisation given these rods spend say 59 minutes of an hour sat on rod rests?

but take fly rods that are casting 59 minutes of an hour are off the shelf build and mostly used by anglers who can afford 'the best'?

honest question
You've contradicted yourself there Nick and made a good argument for custom builds. 😂

Using a marker rod for mini and medium spombs is hardly a stroke of genius either and pretty obvious to anyone with half an ounce of common sense, many of us have been doing it for years.

Last time time I looked there were plenty of custom rod builders out there that specialise in fly rods. Chas Burns and Colin Leatherbarrow are a couple that immediately spring to mind.

Kev Baines knows his stuff that’s for sure, I’m sure I heard a rumour he was retiring?

I have to say, you remind me a lot of Jeff Collins? 😉

they are about the same weight as my transit van how the bloody hell do you hold one of them all day..... imo you won’t beat a normark titan followed closely by a 15 ft hi s
Agree with you there mate. The GTI float rods are long overdue an update
I’ve got the 13’ su and it’s a beautiful thing but the acolyte 13’ compact plus is just as capable and half its weight almost

Acolytes are great rods (even better if they got rid of the war & peace graphics). Had barbel to 9lb on mine with a bit of water on ….coped admiraby

sorry for late reply - i have been busy

the spomb rod i designed was not simple and could not have been made by any custom rod builder in the UK because they do not have the time/expertise

i used the homemade 'jig' to get the basic curve - but then the real work starts on the bank

take prototype rod with rings taped to blank are per jig - take a box of hundreds of rings and tape - take various spombs - take bait wet/dry

and then spend hours testing/changing rings etc etc

THEN you get as near a perfect rod as you as an individual wants

i helped Andy Murray with this type of rod development with House of Hardy fly rods when i had an 'association 'with them

regarding fly rods of a decent pedigree - only a fool would mess with the ringing recommendations of the manufacturer

as regards Colin Leatherbarrow the less said the better but it was not a good experience

personally i would worry more about the welfare of the fish if you hook a good double on the tidal with those rods you could probably land it no question.. but it would take you a lot longer than it would if you were using rods that weren’t under gunned... taking into account you are going in august when it could be scorching hot therefore less oxygen in the water a prolonged fight in those conditions would be detrimental to the fish
you could probably get a pair of korum rods that would do the job for around £100 why take the risk ?
Spot on 👍

sorry, but 90%+ of anglers do not understand test curves

in truth they have really no correlation with how quickly you can land a fish

i could waffle on for hours about how much pressure an angler can apply with a fishing rod but if you search online people with a real scientific background can explain it in minute detail

but simply put a 3.5tc rod does not necessarily land a fish faster than a 1.5tc rod

here endeth the lesson

so by your reckoning you could land a 100lb wels catfish just as quick with a 1.5lb avon than with a dedicated 5lb catfish rod......... behave yourself

sorry, but not going to waste my time replying to such a silly question

you bloody well know what i mean or at least you should do?

Wow!!!! Way to go there Nick. I’m just gonna repeat that as it was quite a bold statement and took a bit to digest……

All rod builders in the uk are lacking both time and the expertise required to build a rod you have designed.

I honestly can say that I have never seen such an arrogant paragraph written on BFW. Seriously Nick it’s time for a few home truths……. An attitude like that is not going to earn you any respect from anyone I know on here. Constant Name dropping, bragging and extremely wild assumptions just to name the top 3.
Oh and what a claim in that paragraph..,,, icing on the cake that’s for sure.
you know all the uk builders then?
you have their schedules out infront of you and you know exactly what they are and aren’t capable of doing? Total and utter bollocks!!!
Nick if you knew 10% of what you claim on here You’d perhaps be able to back it up with a bit more than an arrogant claim and afew well known names dropped.

pmsl

did i mention i'm working with Harrisons to develop a new specialist roach rod?

prototypes start testing in the next few weeks as delayed over a year due to covid

don't get me started on Century rods and the NG tips snapping off at 6" below to tip ring

i pay for all my rods at rrp apart from the prototypes so not to be accused of favouring Harrison

my rods have all been bought as standard factory builds from Johnson Ross

i have 4no 1.25tc Torrix/4no 1.5tc Torrix/4no 1.75tc Torrix - factory builds as i despise custom builds as nothing more than a tart delight

yes, i buy all my rods in fours

talking of Harrison rods imo the Chimera is the best carp rod
Hi Nick , why do you buy your rods in 4s ????🤔

Patronising and with an over inflated ego, jeez, how have we ever endured over 20 years of BFW without such wisdom ............

Whom? no prizes.

Boote reincarnated? :D
