Paul,
Your comments are not patronizing Paul. If I could catch more I would. I only fish one week of the year and if I'm lucky to catch more than one I will take one, but only one. I put the first one back, keep the second and put the rest back. The local rods treat the river like a second income or freezer filler.
I'll let you know how Ian gets on with his new flies, thats assuming he gets to go fishing. Theres a bit of snow in Scotland at the moment and he's going next week.

Certainly no shortage of water about, be a tad chilly up there at the moment, should be fish running, just depends whether you can get near them, I wish him luck.
At least the Avon has produced an early decent fish, more seen too, hopefully the high river levels will bring up more and give me a shout next month!

Now ,I,am getting excited, first day on the Test this Sunday, nice bit of rain, more forecast overnight and tommorrow, decent tides, looks good. Got a huge selection of both fly,s and lures to give a bash, just need some fish, fingers crossed and all that!!!

The opening day of the salmon season produced the first Wye fish – a 7lb sea-liced springer in the afternoon from Redbrook. Our congratulations go to Mr. Davies wins a bottle of Pol Roger. We have heard of 5 Wye fish so far. 2 fresh salmon were reported from the Garnons over the weekend, with another springer lost on the upper river at Pwll-y-Faedda, showing that at least one fish has negotiated the white water at Llyswen. Weather conditions haven’t exactly been enticing, with low water levels and sharp, dry easterlies. No news on the Usk salmon front yet except for kelts – the champagne is still up for grabs!

My own record for Salmon is never caught one on the fly...only one day trying and I still hadn't mastered casting with a great big long fly rod (being rather more used to small rivers an tiny trout) but I am going to put in the time to learn one day. One caught many, many years ago on luncheon meat whilst barbel fishing on the Hampshire Avon and two on worms about ten years ago in the north west of Scotland (where the chance of a salmon these days is next to nill). I don't think I would worm for salmon anymore as it really does mean killing them and that just isn't really on for me these days and the luncheon meat caught one doesn't really count no matter how hard I try to convince myself otherwise and at the time it turn out to be a disappointment as what I thought initially was a really big barbell turned into a very average salmon!

At least there,s fish about, the rain over the last 24hours will have livened up the rivers, maybe too much for successful fly fishing, but I,am no purist, they all count, so if spinning,s the logical choice, so be it, all barbless hooks, strictly catch and release in my book!

it was a size 12 hook. well it swam towards me very quickly so thought it was a good chub untill it started leaping around everywhere just in fron t of me..... it wouldn't give up

Was it a fresh fish or a kelt Ben?
I found an abundance of seatrout kelts yesterday on the Test, one salmon kelt too, seems my winters creativity might well have been time well spent, time will tell!!!!

I know of two grilse taken on the Teme also on maggots at least as I am pretty sure they were grilse rather than kelts, unfortunately neither were landed (the angler concerned was fishing for Grayling and the tackle wasn't up to it!) and it is difficult to tell for sure when they are in the water, but the angler concerned knows his salmon . Great bait for Salmon. Unfortunatly banned until 15 September on the Wye, for just that reason!

It actually isn't that unusual to catch grilse on trotted maggot when grayling fishing the Lower Itchen.

Having said that, one of the Royalty salmon rods got their own back earlier this week when this beauty was landed on a tube fly!

The Royalty produced three salmon in two days last week, the best going 15lbs. One on a cascade, one on a black pot bellied pig and the last on a comet.

The Avon has fished quite well so far, great stuff. The Test hadn,t produced upto last weekend, but I saw Two, loads of seatrout though?

Only one sea trout taken on the Royalty but the beats north of Ibsley have had a few to 5lbs.

Salmon wise Stewart Allum had the best fish off the Avon for a few years from North End when he landed this beauty measuring 44.5" which is a weight between 36 - 37lbs on the Sturdy Scale.

It HAD to go back, thank God - EA law: all salmon caught in England and Wales before mid June must be returned. The Avon, Test and Itchen salmon men are particulalrly hot on catch & release.

now, i know salmon go as hard as barbel, so i can only see it in the context as a 37lb barbel...wow!!!
