Near record barbel

You joke, but it was found dead Saturday morning approx 1/2 mile downstream from where it was last known to have been caught. I know the guy very well who found it (who is an angler), and have seen the pics he took on his mobile phone,( he walks his dog along the stretch). He did drag its corpse onto dry land but the recent rains washed it back in again. Would have been a nice fish to have set up. A great shame, loss to the river and barbel fishing. RIP Split Pec.
The Gade. definitely the gade!

It is a stunning fish , but I can't believe it has never seen the bank before . I reckon if you spent a couple of hours looking at pictures of big barbel captures over the last year or two you would find out where the monster swims ...

the pic on the home page was Bullet hole not Split Pec

well done a great fish indeed, and it does look its weight, i do think a lot of anglers tend to keep its location a secret for various reasons,

For those who haven't seen the leviathan yet...

THIS is the picture of what is believed to be the biggest barbel currently swimming in any river in the UK, all 20lb 7oz of it!

The mighty specimen, which falls just 10oz short of Grahame King’s 21lb 1oz British record, was landed by seasoned specialist Dave Currell when he targeted an undisclosed river stretch.

The Hertfordshire-based rod, who held the British record for the species himself way back in 1998, tempted the new personal best on a feederfished bunch of red maggots.

It is the first barbel over 20lb to be banked from any UK river since the capture of a 20lb 12oz fish from the River Wensum by Mark Rylands in 2008, a barbel which, like Grahame King’s Great Ouse record, is known to have perished at the hands of otters.

“I wouldn’t be at all surprised if this fish doesn’t become a new British record before the end of the year,†Dave told Angling Times.

“After spending the best part of 20 years fishing for specimen barbel, in recent seasons I’ve mainly been concentrating on floatfishing for big roach, but on this particular session I decided to chuck out a feeder as well - and I’m so glad that I did! I was trotting away when I saw the tip on my feeder rod knock a couple of times , so I quickly put my float rod down and grabbed the feeder rod just as it buckled over as the fish hooked itself. It wasn’t clear at first just how big the barbel was until I lifted it out of the water in the net.â€

“When I saw the needle on my scales spring past the 20lb mark I started shaking so much that I couldn’t hold the thing still. I just stood there in disbelief until my witnesses turned up!†added Dave, who beat the fish using 12lb mainline, a 10lb braided hooklink and a size 12 Drennan barbel hook.

Britain’s Top 5 biggest barbel
1 21lb 1oz, Grahame King, River Ouse, 2006
2 20lb 12oz, Mark Rylands, River Wensum, 2008
3 20lb 7oz, Dave Currell, undisclosed river, 2013
4 19lb 5oz, Duncan Kellett, River Kennet, 2006
5 19lb 4oz, Steven Short, River Trent, 2007

Speculation !!!! don't you love it ! a little innuendo :eek:a few wild guesses :eek:, a fish chaser or two who can't add 2+2, and comes up with 440 :eek::eek::eek:, and before you know it, a stretch or two somewhere gets visited by the circus, it happened once to the club i belong to, bankside foliage wrecked, anglers - (well they had rods anyway ) like garden gnomes every 15 feet along the bank, members being threatened some physically  to vacate pre baited swims, and some of them OAP's - 84 years old was the oldest i heard of who was threatened, restrictrictions being brought in to curb the worst excesses - what fun !
If it were to happen again to the club i belong to, we'd need some extra work parties to clear up all the bits of white plastic all over the bank !

It all brings back bad memories for me !

Once again Dave Congratulations, that's a stunning fish mate, very very well done !

On the other hand, two other stretches of river where fish as big as this one live, and it's common knowledge, have not been invaded by the Circus or any other travelling entertainment show!
Maybe time has moved on and the spread of record shakers is growing and people aren't as bothered.
A few years ago, the Great Ouse was about the only river to produce 17lb plus barbel, now 6 or 7 different rivers have done 19lb plus barbel!

Thats only the ones reported I know of an 18 and a fish very close to 19 that came off a very discreet syndicated stretch almost 11years ago now. Due to the size of the river and flooding that havent been recaptured, dead? eaten? possibly but it makes you think what if????

Splendid catch Adrian. If you told me that was the new river record I'd believe you. It actually looks bigger than the twenty.
