Hooks

I use Korda Kurvs and drennan barbel super specialist Teflon rapiers as stated by Jon Frisby
Regards

I assume that most of the hooks we use were designed for Carp fishing .
What i find confusing about hooks and there seems to be so many variations . Short shank , Long shank , Wide gape , Straight eye , Down turned eye , Out turned eye etc etc . It all gets a bit confusing as to what to use . So can some one explain the theory behind all these different hook patterns please . Or am I asking to much

You are right on the money Joe,
not only is it about which type of hook, it's also about which knot to use with which hook. It's also about which set up suits which bait, hair rig or side hook, hard baits or soft baits, it really is a suck it and see. Eventually you end up with set ups that work for you, that you are confident with, and so long as they keep on working you keep using until the next new thing arrives. I don't understand much of the sales hype, like most I try new stuff, if it works keep them, if not revert back to what worked before.
I subscribe to the addage that "more Anglers were caught by fishing tackle than fish ever were"
Unless you are in sales, you're asking too much.
No help I'm sure, but equally confused.
Paul.

I use these hooks, I havent seen a finer hook in 8s and 6s so far.

if you can find me a better one pm me for my address to try.

I bought some of these but this morning I hooked into a barbel which I never saw so cannot say for sure what size it was. I never saw it because the hook snapped on the bend. Now to be fair this could have been a rogue hook but I have never had ANY hook snap on me before.

I'm going to carry out a bit of testing on some of the other hooks I bought but as far as fishing is concerned I'll probably go back to the Korda wide gapes I've used for the past 5 years.

Thats not good news Neil. I'll be interested to hear results of your tests. I'd put that one down to a rouge.

I'm slowly working my way through my second batch of these Rapier hooks without any issues. I fish a lot so the cost saving over mainstream hooks is worthwhile. Yesterday I tested a size 6 on a 19lb floodwater Severn C arp in a very confined swim without a problem. ;)

Just bought some of Jons suggested hooks. Bit worried about the comment by Neil, as I checked back on the thread to make sure I got the right ones...after buying.

I will give them a good test over the next few weeks.

I would suggest once you have found a hook you have total confidence in then take the 'great Jim Gibbinsons' advice and buy a lifetimes supply, because the manufacturers will surely 'inprove' it! ;)

Tight lines

Been using E-S-P Raptor T-6 and never had a problem with them ...
The only problem I do have ..... They told me in my local tackle shop they have stoped producing them .

I've just checked and Raptor T-6 are still showing as current in the latest Drennan trade price list.

Buy a lifetimes supply.......
What I did and still got hundreds - old pattern Nash Fangs - lovely.
Cheers
Bob

That's ok if you didn't pay single packet prices Bob. Think both I and Jon believe these designer 'Carp' hooks are over priced, and there's a good quality hook available without the markup.

To compare ESP T-6

against the Rapier at half the price

Micro Barbed
Beaked point
Straight eye
Chemically sharpened
Matt Black
TEFLON COATED

ESP shorter shank (What difference does that make ) and an elongated needle point which is more likely to 'turn-over' in use

Steve

PS I'm not sponsored by the seller :D

I have only used these hooks in 6 and 8's Neil, never used 10's. Last season I had hundreds of barbel off the Trent and in comparison to the hooks I did use prior which were esp D7s these hooks win hands down by a country mile. I did a few experiments and they dont even straighten until about 18pounds, where as the D7s staightened at 12-13. The best bit is the point takes a long time to dull, where with other hooks the point as always burring or losing its point.

I will say again in 6 and 8s you will not be dissapointed. Was the broken hook by any chance a 10?

Jon

Well got some, look good.

Bob, can you confirm the amount I need for my lifetime please.

I'll then know whether to spend my saving quickly or eek them out a bit.

Cheers

Neil you are right, is a small saving over your usual trusted hooks worth it?

From memory found a place with old stock and these worked out at £2.00 per packet of 10. Then was put onto someone doing them loose and it was either £5 per 25 or 50. Needless to say bought a moderate amount of Fang and Fang X. Also got hold of size 10's and 12's. I believe when the new pattern was introduced they flogged them as Nash Specialist hooks (green packet) and managed to find some stock of these going very cheap.
Graham - don't know but guess someone will inherit some of mine. Although strait points they keep their sharpness very well.
Best hooks in the galaxy IMO.
Cheers
Bob

I have mainly used the rapier hooks in the size 10 for the last season and have full confidence in them. For me the only time these have snapped (very rare) is when I have caught something on the retrieve & they have never snapped when playing a fish. Similar to Jon, may be a hundred or so less, caught a lot of fish on these but also many a good fish with confidence; and equally interesting the ratio of lost fish slipping the hook on the retrieve compared to the previous season decreased too.

I personally prefer the smaller size 10 as it tends not to catch the bottom as much saving the onerous task of rig tying.
