Dying on it's backside.

Ah great enforcer, wielder of the licensing cudgel, it is indeed a hearty sight to see thee posting scribble again here.

I'm off to watch some telly now whilst swagging copious amounts of Irish Whiskey to keep the frost out. What no frost yet? OK I'm practicing.

Regards,

Lee.

Hello chaps ,tis indeed the good burger of Worcester ,here , and how lovely to see my old chums from Barbeldom still playing .

As for Friar Lees comments (well he is from Sheriff country " about the Porky Pons ,well I am aghast ,my training regime of finest pies and brekkies is going famously ,but I am lurking on the banks again in my big yellow jacket with da boyz ,obviously in a squash 'em type roll ,rather than fleet of foot ,though am lead rally driver across the fields in the 4/4 .

I have not read the rest of the thread ,but ,n'owt much changes ,mee ducks ,just we are little older and in my case greyer than the burgermeister from Maidenhead ,The Silver Fox ,himself .

Life goes on a pace ,far too busy really ,but all good fun :)

Lots of love to all my good friends, cos that's what you all are ,we are all far too seasoned for any blooming spats.

Work tomorrow again ,back out on the beat ,as it were .The sword of Damocles must indeed be wealded to those that abuse our laws of the land .

There's something here that reminds me of a scene from Blackadder Goes Forth;

General Melchett:*[to Baldrick] Ah, tally-ho, yippety-dip and zing zang spillip! Looking forward to bullying off for the final chukka?
Captain Blackadder:*Permission to speak.[Baldrick is silent]
Captain Blackadder:*Answer the General, Baldrick!
Private Baldrick:*[whispers] I can't answer him, sir, I don't know what he's talking about.

I'm sorry, what was that Chris?
Only joking, glad you're still about.

Kind regards

Damian

Just popped in for a look and to pick up some messages young Elliot scolded me for not picking up several years ago, much to my surprise I had to reach quickly for the calendar to check that I was indeed in 2013 and not back in the early 2000's.

Once I'd taken a few pills to get over the shock it was great to see so many of the old crew still around and still sparing..Lee still as eloquent as ever, Damian still throwing the occasional spanner, Paul managing to find enough time out off the saddle to post, Portly Pons still as humoured as ever (but good looking is pushing it a bit far) and so many many more...long May it last, I may even start posting again .......oooooops I just did.

Well done Andy on keeping it going for so long and look forward to reading lots more.

Another literary pugilist returns from out of the woodwork.
Hope you are keeping well Keith?

Oh yes this is all very twee and nice but can we please have Paul Boote and Colin Gordon back for a bit of balance ;)

And while we are all donning the Rose tinted specs why not put up the old Wensum thread as an example of the "Good old days" ? The bile, vitriol and personal slandering that went in the main unchecked on there was a disgrace IMO.

As far as forums go the old Tenchfishing world will never be bettered but sadly most who were on there are now either too old and infirm to work a keyboard or they simply ran out of stuff to say :D which is what happens.
Never saw much of the moderators on there either, simply because they weren't needed.

Surely part of the problem and this thread is becoming a bit like it, is that it makes the forum seem like a clique/old boys club which is off putting to newer members who frankly do not know any of these folk or what their views are - and, like myself, probably do not care what the forum was like in the noughties.

Hi Paul, I can see where your coming from but there are still many of those from back when this site first started still posting and have been all the time. Also were all newbies once and very much novice Barbel anglers.

The main point is that nearly all of us that have known each other for many years got to know each other primarily through this site and the activities and friendships it created. It was also a big plus in promoting various organisations like the Barbel Society. It helped remove the cloak of elitism that seemed to shroud the mystery of the specialist angler, it removed the barriers.

Fishing should be taken seriously and enjoyed, Forums are for fun, help, a source of knowledge and getting to know others.
Keith

Been better Damian, good to see you still here.

Keith - take your point. Some of us have been fishing for barbel for a long tine but have only relatively recently joined the site. I wrote an article for Specialist Angler (i think it was called that) back in the 90's about the Medway just before it became famous or should that be infamous. I suppose what i am saying is that surely we do not want that elitism that you rightly say was overturned re-appearing and if that means threads about landing net handles then so be it.

A way round this of course it to create stickies, a photography site I am on has one for each camera model so there are not hundreds of threads on each. Or have a section on tackle with headings such as rods, reels etc but i do not underestimate the time it takes to do this and the work for the site managers.

Keith you always put it much more elegantly than my blundering typing and choice of words but we are both thinking along same lines,
this new BFW is good
and so was the old BFW apart from just a few over egotistical guys

Hi John, was pleased to see your name amongst the posters still here and as you would guess I totally agree with your comments. Yes there were one or two strong egos around back then. In my opinion there is nothing wrong with that, providing it is done in a civil and meaningful way. Back then it to often drifted into personal and sometimes threatening written comments.

The problem as always is, that to provide a vibrant and lively forum you need the right mix of personalities to enable any debate to evolve. It is the same that more people will stop and watch a fight than a couple being friendly (dependent on how friendly) which is why controversional posts always appear to attract more participants and run much longer.

Andy has chosen the path he wishes this site to follow, as is his right. It is very rare I post anywhere these days but from what I have seen and read so far I look forward to looking in more often.
Keith

Out of the forest comes a warrior.

Hi Keith,

Hows things. You back on your feet yet?

I managed to get that good looking bailiff a modelling job today. He starts modelling gloves on Monday.

Now you've turned up I wonder how many of the others are going to appear with their dustbin lid shields, wooden swords and saucepan helmets?

Someone said that BFW is dying on its backside? Really?

Bet Darth's watching.

Smiley Face.

Regards,

Lee.

The Magnificent Barbel Fishing Emporium Of Pleasure.

This thread has had 16,568 views. Was it me? Or was it Damian?

Nah. It was me.

Can I ask you all to form two orderly lines, some can hold hands if you want to, and begin to file into the BFW shop where you can purchase all manner of goods and chattels intended to help you catch the fish in your dreams.

Regards,

Lee.

Hi Lee you old Grantham Grumbler, so this is where your hiding. There was me thinking you were still hard at work as I keep looking into your Blog for great pearls of wisdom and factual episodes. I had great expectations of lots of interesting factual articles to read......what is there is good, but then again you know that! Somebody told me you had mellowed, I told them not to believe it you were only going through a change ( or was it the change ).

Seriously Lee as you know, your angling knowledge and writing skills are second to none so it's about time you got down to some serious keyboard time. I for one would enjoy reading the results.

Still not good on the feet yet, the shattered heel is just starting to feel a bit better can walk a bit and driving again as the 4x4 is automatic. Trouble is the strain of having to use the left leg all the time to take the weight has knackerd the left knee that I had the Op on last year. Booked in 2nd Dec for knee replacement. Hoping to get a few days fishing in before then.

Keith

Paul ,
These old dogs gave this Forum huge viewing and great entertainment back in the day . They may or may not return ,but the Forum will be way poorer if they dont .

In the days of the old forum when men were men and we were graced by the presence of the barbel gods, there was a very heated River Medway thread, which had to be closed down for a while to cleanse it of the vitriole. Of course in those distant times many hid behind assumed identities and egos, as I still do, but I do not believe that BFW is dying but will be with us for a long time, unlike the late lamented Waterlog forum, where Hugo Curgudgeon first made his appearance.

Does anybody else find it rather ironic that the OP, who has created a thread that has had nearly 17,000 views, and has drawn many old faces to return, has been banned for creating such a thread?

But Dave it's not the size, it's what you do with the thread that counts.

I find it ironic that a lot of guys who claimed a foul at the OP being banned in the first place are now back pedalling furiously! Intrigued face.

I aint too good at this lurking lark.
