Custom big river rods.

Thanks everyone that has commented.

I should add, and not sure how well this will go down on here so please don't hate me for it, I want to use a pair, up the Thames, doing nights and using bite alarms.

I know its not to everyone's taste but hear me out.....

I'm a carp angler by nature been doing it 25 years but have completely fallen out of love with it, hence my change to a lot more specimen angling, especially fishing for Barbel. All my fishing so far has been done with one rod and a centre pin, I absolutely love it and will continue to fish this way as much as possible, but......

The one thing I really miss about my carp fishing is the escape it gives me when I go for 24 hours and fish the night. I need that in my life but can't be doing it on the busy carp lakes anymore so thought why not do it, up the Thames for Barbel, I know it will not be for everyone and that's fine but it's a big part of my life that I miss.

Anyway, not sure if that would make any difference to what blank people would recommend, in terms of how I am going to use them. It's also why I mentioned it would be nice if they could be also used for Tench as I'll be fishing for them, again will give me my escape frok eveey day life for 24 hours once a week, in the close season.

Cheers
Martin

Underrated test curve
It’s a beast of a rod. Quite stiff tipped but when it does the rod certainly bends through
Again interesting
I’ve been using a 1.5 DC alongside a 1.25 Torrix for a few season as NSL
Torrix is the downstream ( plenty of grunt if needed to stop kiting fish) rod
The DC is my sleeper upstream rod and bends like a chimera 2 but I wouldn’t describe as that powerful- but puts a smile on your face and lands fish in a timely manner

I don’t think the use of alarms is going to get you in any bother Martin, loads of people use them for barbel, have a walk down the popular sections of the Trent and you’ll be hard pushed not to see them in use in conjunction of a tripod.

Personally they don’t fit into my barbel fishing but that’s not to say the people that do use them are doing anything wrong. It’s actually responsible to use them on long sessions to ensure the earliest indication possible is noted even through moments of concentration laps.

I would never recommend using them as a reason to sleep behind baited rods. It only takes 1 loop of line to go under your spool or get looped round a guide unnoticed to render your freespool system completely useless and your rods are going in!

Wind in if you’re gonna get some kip.

Cheers mate, I appreciate your advice and respect your opinion, although do t want to get involed in the rights and wrongs of sleeping whilst fishing.

Sort of wish I had worded it different, have you ever been able to edit a post on here?.

My point was more that I want to use more than one rod with a very static approach, 24 hours plus at times. I wasn't sure if some of the recommendations might have been because one rod is lighter or better in the hand, would lend itself better to rolling meat etc..

Looks like my choice is between the Chimera 3 and Torrix 2.25 so whilst these will be predominantly used for attempting to catch Barbel if they could make a nice tench rod that would be a bonus. If one was much better suited to Barbel than the other I would get them but if they are fairly equal, in terms of how I want to use them but one made a much better Tench rod, I'd get them.

I'm not against the idea of getting something built for the Thames and getting a set of Tench rods built too in fairness but when I stopped carp fishing I told my wife this would be much cheaper as I wouldn't be spending hundreds of pounds a year on tickets and £200 a month on bait .

Thankfully she is very understandable

As I said earlier I think the C3 is a pretty average tench rod. The Torrix is much better.

Have a chat with Mark Tunley. His Dark Carbon Specialists 2.5 might be what you are looking for. I’ve got them for Autumn on the Trent and could use for LR Tench rods. The action is to be tried and seen . I love mine.

Looking to get a pair or three custom rods built mainly to use on the Thames for Barbel. Would also be nice if they made lovely tench rods.

My initial thoughts were 12ft 2.25lb Torrix but something tells me these aren't that highly regarded, pretty sure I've read that somewhere so any recommendations would be great.

Cheers
Martin.
Hi Martin, I recently had a pair of 2.5lb torrix built by Buzzard rods. They make for what I feel, is the best barbel rod I've ever used, nice and stiff with a fast action, I've used all the top end gear over the years, and for my style of barbel fishing they can't be betterd. So, haven used them also for method carp fishing on the pod, feel they would also make a very usable tench rod. Have a look on his website or Facebook. Too see if his build style suits your needs.

Fair play to you mate. Nothing wrong with any of that. I have a similar tale regarding the Carp fishing. Mine goes back to 1972 so the changes have been massive! I too struggle with it now even on syndicate lakes. I just feel like I'm in a hamster wheel and need to get off! Hope you find what you're looking for ( and the rods too!) 👍

Depends what you are after in a tench rod. I've used the C3's for lobbing out big method feeders to medium range, and they are decent casting tools but not ideal for playing tench and using lighter hooklengths / smaller hooks. As you would expect really. .

Does anyone know anywhere that stock the factory built Harrison Torrix 12ft 2.25lb?

Johnson Ross, The Tackle box, Davies Angling stock all the Torrix specialist rods except that one.

Please try before you buy, as it could be a very expensive mistake.... 💰 🤑
Yeah I agree mate, hence me asking if anyone knows anywhere that stocks them. I've got lots of custom rods but all are carp rods apart from my favourite ever which I had built this summer, my 11ft 1.75lb Torrix so it's not the first time I've been down this route.

I'd give anyone the same advice though, definitely try to get your hands on the rod before buying it.

Seems a bit odd that the usual places stock all the Torrix specialist range, except the 12ft 2.25lb

Might be worth asking Johnson Ross or your nearest AD to see if they can get a factory built one in for you to “buy”. I was in my local AD a while ago and they said to someone else they could get Torrix Rods in for a customer to see before buying

I spoke to Johnson Ross today and they are going to get back to me about ordering me a pair.

Just reluctant to incase I don't like them, although that does seem unlikely.
