Crucian carp

Stuart,

Virtually impossible to know for sure without dissecting. I know that many suppliers sold browns to meet the demand for crus in the past, but i think that the crus in "that place" are genuine old estate lake stock, although if anything could have hybridised with the stunted commons that also live in there. It looks more crucian to me with the dorsal a little further back than you'd expect on brown goldfish, but the mouth looks very slightly different to what ive caught from lemington recently and they are certified true cru. Could just be the camera angle though. Still a lovely fish. :)

Funny you should say that, when I looked back at the photos I thought it looked a bit 'wrong' too. Although at the time there wasn't a doubt in my mind and all of the smaller fish were typical little crucians.

What does everyone else think?

I didn't want to say anything when I saw that picture earlier but there is something not 100% crucian about that fish. The body shape is a bit too solid looking. Was it carrying a lot of spawn?

I think that its one of those things where you just have to be honest with yourself and accept that if it don't look right, it probably isn't. I remember being in a similar situation 30 years ago with a brace of 3lb rudd, that just weren't quite right, though it took me a while to swallow the bitter pill and accept that they were hybrids.

Yeah, I think it must have been carrying spawn but it certainly looked and felt bloated.

As I said above, at the time nothing seemed out of the ordinary about the fish, but looking at the photo it definitely looks a bit odd. As Paul said, it's the mouth that doesn't look quite right to me.

It was only a 2lber so I'm not really too fussed, but I will certainly be paying a little mire attention to any more that I catch - particuarly if they're over 3lb.

Stuart.

What do you think it was then....A Crucian crossed with what, a Brown Goldfish, or a Common Carp?

Still whatever its parentage, still a nice proportioned fish, and at 2lb+ makes my one look well small.

I once had a long conversation with the late Alwin Wheeler of the Natural History Museum about identifying true crucians and he said the only 100% way to tell was to cut them open and check out the colour of the wall of the gut. I think he said it was pink in true crucians and black in brown goldfish. He did agree, however, that if you know what a true crucian looks like, it is easy to tell the difference. I guess the big problem with that, nowadays, is that crucians have become so rare that no one can remember what they looked like.

Had a Crucian this morning while Tench fishing at Napton
Not Massive but it's the first one i have caught for 4 years ....Made my day !!!

Nice fish Stuart, was that a local fish? Shortage of good crucian waters in swindon area, in fact there isnt any unless you want to sit it out on ham pool for what might never be caught. :(

Paul

If you're looking in Paul - I got lucky last night !! :) Looks like a real one to me.

As it's the only one I've ever caught its also a PB :D

Steve,

Just back from a wet holiday in cornwall:(. Just spotted your post, absolutely cracking fish mate and from a very tough crucian water. Even knowing the general area that they come from on that place is no guarantee of a fish, so you are very very lucky indeed; really well done.:D

I`ve been reaquainting myself with the magical experience of crucian fishing this summer.

Only managed two trips after them but theres plenty more to come next year!

Two trips for 15 crucians, all on the float with this beauty setting a new pb.

I can`t remember spending a whole day fishing with a silly grin before:D:D:D:D

My crucian campaign has started in earnest. After a few tough sessions I finally managed to find a few fish. I had several over 2lbs topped off by a couple of real crackers going 3lb 2oz and a 3lb 11oz, which equals my PB. My angling buddy Spamalot, has also managed a few beauties, but that's his story to tell.

Blimey Nathan, what a beauty! Well done!

Wouldn't have even thought to have a go for them this early - goes to show how little I know!!!

Its certainly not easy at the moment. The night time temperatures are keeping the water temp down. Once this picks up then they will start to become much more active. It has improved over the last couple of nights. I think we'll start to see a real difference now.

Well this has almost distracted me from the tench before my campaign has even started!!

Does anyone know of any decent crucian waters around Oxfordshire? Given the amount of water, I'm sure there must be a few but I've never knowingly managed to stumble across one. PMs welcome from anyone willing to share top secrets! :D

Old thread I know:eek:

But I love a bit of crucian fishing and often spend a fair bit of time in summer doing evening sessions with the float rod after them. Biggest caught so far was 2lb 4oz and that was a couple of years ago so I could do with beating that one soon:)

It's always been a dream of mine to own a small pit and stock it with some real crucians and no carp:D

crucians, tench and rudd...:D

Had a weird one the other day. Was fishing the carp rods for grassies and had a very odd `breamy` take which resulted in this lovely 2.10.08 crucian:

These things do my head in a few times each summer so to catch one on 25lb silkworm, size 8 hook and two pieces of fake corn was a tad unexpected!
