Crucian carp

Evening all,

Does anyone know of any decent crucian waters in the wilts/glos area capable of producing fish of 2-3lbs. Been fishing at lemington lakes and slowly coming to the conclusion that it doesnt contain the better crus it advertises, having almost emptied the place in recent weeks. Any info greatly received and with thanks in advance.

Dave,

No it was priory or the crucian pool as it is also called. It's packed full of crucians, but ive done about half a dozen trips now for a biggest at 1.5lbs and ive had loads and would have expected one or two better fish if they were in there. A mate has also fished it and had loads but hasnt had much over 1lb. Nowhere near the sizes stated in the blurb. Lovely place that it is, i dont think i'll be going back for the crus.

Might join cemex next year for the summer pit, but would be nice if there was somewhere local with a better stamp of fish.

some work has been done on the summer, not sure how it go's now, are the big crucians still in marsh?
lemmington looks like a day coming up for me, i know where it is, just off the A44.

Marsh farm still has the big crus but you need to get a membership and fish late/night for a better chance. There used to be stacks of big crucians in a place called whitley park, matches were often won with ton up bags of big crucians but they were sold to willow park years ago, another lovely fishery ruined by greed!

Haven't been back since the bailiff informed us that bread cupping was using groundbait and therefore banned. :(

after tench today, I hooked a crucian on a small piece of meat, played it, got it to the surface, estimated it to be the biggest one I have ever caught (about 2 1/2lb), when a foot away from the net, i got that horrible sensation of the hook pulling and the fish sinking from view. the air was blue :p

Started my crucian campaign this morning and got off to a flyer... Biggest 2.05 (below) along with another four of around 1lb. Happy days! Lets hope Wednesday proves as productive on the river!

Nice fish Stuart, was that a local fish? Shortage of good crucian waters in swindon area, in fact there isnt any unless you want to sit it out on ham pool for what might never be caught. :(

Lovely pic!

Memory is shadey, Paul, but I think Isis might have a few. Don't quote me though, it's been donkeys and even then was just what some bloke told me when I was fishing there.

Darren/ Paul,

You're right about ISIS - I believe their lake over at the waterpark has a few crucians in it. Bought the book last year with the intention of having a go for them but didn't get round to fishing the place once!! Indecision and too much choice really is a curse for an angler!

Anyway, I'm sure the ISIS lake would be a better bet than Ham Pool.

Julian,

For my Crucian fishing I tend to use 4lb Drennan Floatfish straight through to a Drennan Super Specialist 16. I've found this to be light enough to not put the Crucians off but also heavy enough to avoid getting snapped up (especially if you hook a tench).

In my personal experience, Drennan Double Stength (in just about any b/s) is RUBBISH!!! I now avoid it like the plague.

Hope that helps.

Stu

Heard about ISIS, but not sure if there are many fish in there. Ham pool is rock hard, i fished it for several years back in the early 90s and never caught one crucian; they rarely come out. Line for me is 4lb 12oz reflo powerline straight through, which at .13mm is quite fine and very strong if tench/carp pull the float under. Heard v good things about drennan float fish as well. Have you seen/tried the drennan glow tip antenna floats, they are the dogs bits for crus, especially when fishing large pieces of soft paste at dead depth with just the red tip showing. When they wittle the paste away to a mouthable size, the fluoro sections appear and then the float lifts or dips depending on the bite. Very visual and exciting stuff.

Julian, that rod should be okay, i use a 12ft drennan carp waggler puddle chucker which is nice and bends well for small stuff, but with the backbone for carp, which ive had on it up to nearly 15lbs with the reflo.

I agree with Paul, the rod you are using should be fine - with the exception of really heavy rods, it shouldn't make too much difference, the only thing the crucians see is your terminal tackle!

That said, I use Drennan Series 7 Avon/ Quiver (Quavon as I like to call it!). Strong but still fairly light with a nice action.

I wouldn't get too disheartened by the contrast in your first two sessions, crucians can be very fickle at the best of times. I had another session the other day and also blanked despite doing everything exactly the same as when I caught 5 on my previous trip!!!

Funny you should say that, when I looked back at the photos I thought it looked a bit 'wrong' too. Although at the time there wasn't a doubt in my mind and all of the smaller fish were typical little crucians.

What does everyone else think?
