Common Courtesy and the half way rule

I would have politely told him I was fishing 2/3over and just seen what his answer was. ConverseI was the angler I would have shouted over and asked where he is fishing.

Can I just ask please, what would the posters who have said both were at fault have done if faced with the same situation as the OP?

I have had it happen. You can try a bit of friendly dialogue. Failing that, you either get on with it or bugger off elsewhere.

Does all this have any bearing on the otters, cormorant or crayfish issues...or whether I have a suitable landing net handle......it's just it all sounds so familiar...................:D:D:D

Cheers, Dave.

Agree with the poster, would have been polite not to have fished directly opposite a settled angler on a small river, nor in close proximity on the same bank, act and treat others how you would like to be treated and you won' t go far wrong.

Paul, sadly, the people 'who think of others' are an ever-diminishing species. Had it been your identical twin on the far bank, I dare say he would have fished elsewhere, even if he'd been looking forward to fishing that particular peg. Indeed, if he'd been pre-baiting it, he wouldn't have wanted to draw attention to it in the first place. I suspect the chap concerned is the type that stops on the zig-zags outside his children's primary school and parks in the disabled bays at his local supermarket because 'they're handy'.
I'd say you're right unfortunately Anthony. You can see it from some of the posts in this thread. All about people's "rights" rather than doing what's right.

So you reckon I'm making the whole thing up?

no i do not but have a good idea were it happened as most of the channel is on opposite bank
it does happen a few years a go i was fishing at night in the summer and a salmon angler came wading down the middle of the river i could not see him and he could not see me till i cast out and nearly hit him with a 3 oz lead

I have never experienced this sort of thing on a river, finding that other anglers respect your personal fishing space, irrespective of what the law might be. No one really wins if both anglers just sit it out, refusing to budge. Seems to be a first come first served "rule".

I would have been hugely irritated if I had experienced what the OP did. However, knowing I wasn't entirely playing by the rules myself, I would have had my say, set about the nettles with a bank stick, and then moved on. Not sure I would have bothered posting on here-fascinating though the thread has become.

I did have a bit of an"episode" on a local lake a month ago. My dad travelled quite far to see me and join me on the lake to catch a few tench and carp. We got there early, traipsed round to the other side of the lake, set up and cast out. 10 minutes later, some chap arrives and screams from the opposite end of the lake " get off the lake, you can't fish here, there's a match on" I lost the total plot. Marched round had the chat. No mention of any match in the club fixture list. He then points at the noticeboard near the car park. Yep, there it was in black and white. My response, and not an unreasonable position to take I thought was "what the **** is the point of that!!! Isn't it better to communicate this sort of thing BEFORE people might have traveled to the venue!?"

And then when fishing a rubbish and adjacent lake, some guy plonked himself on the other side of a small tree. I had already positioned a bait just under the branches and on a recast, the chap came round and had a go at me for fishing in "his half" of the tree swim.

Fishing-relaxing and calming and lovely.

1 of the clubs i belong to has no rules like, only marked swim or a fixed distance between anglers, i know many do as it helps with these issues. Fishing a couple of years ago i had set my rod up and had just had a quick 13lb barbel. Another chap walked up admired the fish and said..this looks like a good spot, i replied i hope so. He then plonked his gear down about six feet from me and said i think i'll fish here, theres bound to barbel around.

He wasnt breaking any rules except a general rule about unsportsmanlike behaviour, so might have been perfectly legally ok to do so. I didnt agree and was not very polite about telling him. He mumbled something went downstream @ 70 yds and set his stuff 10ft upstream from another angler who was obviously more polite than i. This on a 1000yds of bank with 3 people on it . Might be legal but it w just plain wrong i lean towards eqtiquette should be more important, sadly as has been pointed out its not with everyone. Similar has happened a few times, normally i move elsewhere but its bloody irritating :)

I agree with Paul and can't believe some of the comments. Even if it was the last peg available I wouldn't fish opposite someone, it's just the right thing to do.

Cliff.

I would have advised the other angler that it was considered bad form to fish opposite someone who was already fishing.

If a reasonable response was not forthcoming, I would have seen who's line was the strongest, after loading up with some 30lb braid.

This on the smaller rivers and given that plenty of other parts of the river were free.

I posted on here some time ago about a chap who dropped in 10 yards below me on a stretch with one other angler on 1 mile of river. There is no need.

I can't see any argument is to be had. Of course it is bad etiquette to set up next to or opposite someone else that is there before you. It's happened a couple of times to me. I say my piece and if they can't see reason And move then I move. No point in spoiling the day.

That's not fair Graham, as I said at the time, I just like to fish in the glow of your golden orbs :D

Not that my personal habits are any of your business at all. Normally in the cuddy of my boat or anywhere I want to as long as I have taken measures not to cause offence. I am Diabetic and there are numerous legal points of law that protect anyone with a medical condition like mine from prosecution.

I'm a diabetic too Kevin, does that mean I can night fish BAA waters without getting kicked off? :D

Hi men ,

Been following this thread , putting aside the legality side of things , I don't like people doing things to me , that I would never consider doing to anyone else . People encroaching on my fishing is one of my biggest bug bares , not just in barbel fishing , but all forms of angling . I have actually picked swims that takes this into consideration , and you should not go fishing with that attitude , or worries . I don't argue , because reasoning wont work with someone who would do that in the first place , we just move , although someone last season is now missing an eardrum who upset sue so much she cracked !.

So facts are the bloke was within his rights , legally within his rights , that's life .

No problem with pals Crooky. Besides with this hot weather and sun it means I would be able to cast into a shaded bit of river.:D

I don't think there is an alternative to etiquette and hopefully people reading this thread will understand that goes as a given with river fishing.
