Bite alarms for barbel fishing?

I ordered a set from Ted Carter and they wont be available until the 14th of January 2011. I also spoke to Delkim as i thought i had a snag with my txi's, they also confirmed mid Jan. I can see a lot of people ordering them so get in quick. I do like the idea that you can take the snag ear or ears out when not needed and a lot less fiddling around as they use the battery case as a mounting. Never felt happy on the TT with both my rods up in the air, bow in the line and a heavy wind in my face. Problem solved.

Time will tell if its worth the purchase though

worth £13.00

Saves trashing a rod and damaging a reel and as some BFW's could comment, having the lot dragged in.
I always have a little panic when fishing two rods and i get one of "Swordsy's Double Headers".

single is more than enough, a 4ft twitch doesn't need the sensitivity of a minnow.

I'd generally prefer to have something than not, provided it doesn't cost the earth to have it. With 20/20 hindsight, I wish I'd applied that adage when buying my Delks. I'd have got the TXi version rather than Plus.

I merely clip my line to some convenient part of a Lady Guide, then, if she squeals suddenly, I strike! Works for me: caught and continues to catch me some real beauties; saves a fortune on batteries, too.

Delkims here too. Started with optonics then fox then decided to get wireless alarms so I could have the volume off when fishing close in. That was 4 years ago and can't see any chance of changing ever again

Actually started with ones as described in Still Water Angling!
- the rod used to fly off the rests before the alarms beckoned!
Oh 1970's Carp Fising with balanced bread on unpressured waters!

With every probability of sounding like a doughnut, whats a "Lady Guide" ?

Ah. Well, clearly young and still blissfully ignorant of the finer things in life Stephen, if you have to ask, you don't know (your loss). Better that you get on the interwotsit soonest, and see what deals they're currently doing on tankerloads of totally inedible (probably toxic to fish life too, but not to those who eat, say, High Street chain burgers regularly) coloured jam; you're going to need a lot of it.

it would be nice to answer a straight question with an even straighter answer sometimes.

When I posted I suspected that it may cause a bit of a ruck. I never imagined that it would go this particular route.;):D

No worries Chris, just a bit of harmless banter.

In my humble opinion (for what it's worth), all my fishing companions tell me that Delks are the dog's danglies. Whether the sensitivity of vibration indication over roller indication is important in barbel/river fishing then only you can decide for yourself. I still wait for the 2 foot twitch for barbel. Other river species I sat glued to quiver tips.

Myself - I have a set of old fox mmxr's gathering dust in the shed which will probably see me out till I shuffle off.

Bite alarms ?Watch your rod ends you lazy so and so's ! As for ' lady guides ' you must have immense powers of persuasion to get them out on the bank in this weather Paul :)

I guess touch ledgering enables and encourages me to hit bites /twitches I would not strike at if just watching the rod tip.

I dont hold with this rather misguided and cavalier opinion that it has to be a 3 foot twitch before it is worth striking. It is imo a rather stupid description ,as one is lifting a rod into a fish already hooked. The mighty pull we generally get is when the fish bolts away as it feels the hook,it is not the bite!
I very rarely use alarms, but when I do, it must be benificial to get the very most sensitive to simulate touch ledgering, even if used as an early warning system.
We will never know how many bites we didnt notice,,,
Mark (feeling a bit grumpy tonight)
