BAA Guide to Waters 2012 Cover Image

All my river angling is done on BAA waters. TBH, most of the 'idiots' flock to the same old stretches, the same old pegs and tell you the same old stories of 8lb Chub and 15lb Barbel. If you're prepared to travel light and out of sight of the car park then you can have stretches to yourself and there isn't a better value club in the UK IMO. But as Lawrence said, the people running the show are still living in the 70s. The club has declined but those at the top would rather bury their heads in the sand than be proactive and put things right.

Pete - I've emailed John Williams, secretary of the BAA, on several occasions over the years and he doesn't want to know about any of the issues that affect their waters. It's always the responsibility of someone else.

I think the BAA is in decline, in fact dramatic decline, Lee is right, John Williams doesn't give a monkees on the real issues that anglers face, they fail to embrace or understand its membership, I hope for the day that they will do some kind of analysis of who makes up the membership and asks what its members want, act upon feedback, and communicate, the only communication I get is a letter once a year reminding me that my membership is up, when do we ever hear what they think of the pertinent questions facing anglers today, such as Otters, fish thefts, poaching, they should be at the forefront and taking the lead , at least in the Midlands, why are they not talking to other organisations and pooling resources to combat the real issues, but nothing changes, they do nothing.
I predict it will go the way of the LAA, its one time southern counterpart, less and less people will buy the card, thus creating a cash crisis, thus losing waters, thus less cards sold, thus the end! But hey what do I know.......?

Perhaps the modern day equivalent of a river match for us kind of anglers who might loosely describe ourself as a "specialist", "big fish" or "single species" angler is the "Fish-In" like the ones that Dean organised recently, that the Barbel Society hold on their waters or the Grayling Fish-In which is being planned on another thread here?

Lee, as much as it ****'s me off to say this......after your 'other' comment :p

I couldn't agree more with what you've said there :)

Yes I agree, sadly the BAA do not want to know about anything that is of importance to both the environment angling or angling, other than seeking revenue from their matches. Take Pershore EVERY Saturday and Sunday in the Summer and Autumn the fishery is booked, thus putting a great deal of pressure on what was once a good fishery.

I have tried to voice my concern, but was fobbed off and was told that in fact these matches mattered more to BAA than the members.

By the way, obviously I blame Thatcher and the Blair for all of the problems...:(
Along with the invention of the interweb, Big Macs and Simon Cowell

Aw HECK Pete, why did ya want to go and remind me about that lot? I haven't had a good moan about any of that bunch of ****s for ages

Did you know..........................:p:D:p

Cheers, Dave :D

I hadn't thought of that. Good point and rather cheered me up. Such iniatives are great stuff.

Spot on Pete :D

The problem is that the conservatives seem unable to come up with statesman with charisma and forceful, powerful personalities any more. Much as I detested her and her policies, Thatcher was the last of the impressive, Churchillian style leaders they have produced. Since then, a procession of 'Grey men' have come and gone...with barely a ripple.

Labour have done little better, apart from Blair, who like him or loath him was undeniably charismatic. However, he seems to have frightened them pooless, and poor George had visions WAY beyond his capabilities.....so they have now opted for the VERY safe, VERY harmless option in young.....oh blow....I seem to have forgotten his name. What IS his name?..........:p

So....we end up with Sarkozy and his gang gloating about how easy we are to push around and outmanoeuvre now. I suppose we could always work up a decent dislike for the coalition leaders for that alone :D

OH dear....rambled on so far I seem to have lost sight of the original thread altogether. Sorry peeps

Cheers, Dave.

Labour had John Smith and Robin Cook, both of whom I knew slightly and both decent blokes, although whether they would have remained so if they ever achieved great office we will never know because of their early deaths. The new breed all look like they work in public relations (as indeed most of them did).

The Tories have Ken Clark and Boris Johnson. Both who seem to be decent blokes as well (although Boris may well be as mad as he actually pretends to be:rolleyes:), but both seem to be disliked in their own party.

Seems bland is the only way to get elected. Although it may be a blessed relief after , as you say, charisma of both Thatcher and Blair. After all, arguably the most successful peacetime prime minister this country has ever had was Clem Attlee and he had a charisma by pass for sure:D

We are no so far from the point of this thread...what was it again? Still nearly Xmas, so peace and good will to you all, irrespective of whatever your opinions on the weighty subject matter of this thread, that seems to have entirely slipped my mind.:p

Steady on Albert, too much excitement :) Hope your keeping well.

RE: Tony Blair. In a way he being PM could be blamed on my wife.

A little known fact is that at the first Sedgefield CLP selection meeting Tony Blair didn't even get short listed for the seat. He didn't even attend the meeting and only sent a tatty A5 leaflet - so much for 'charisma'

After the that selection meeting frantic phone calls took place over the weekend between the then Sedgefield CLP Chair, Mick Terrance, and Michael Foots office.

Result, TB was put on the short list of candidates, and as they say the rest is history.

My wife was also on the short list and was asked to stand down after TB had been 'planted' but she wouldn't. Had she stood down her votes might have gone to a stronger local candidate and he might just have got the vote. She didn't, and TB was selected.

So, anytime anyone has a go at Blair, blame my wife!
I often do :)

Blair has gone but she is still flying the flag

As for BAA, I have known John Williams for 7-8 years and everything he does is for the BAA and angling. He did help get them out of the **** not too many years ago

The last time there was an outcry over the BAA - the live biting issue - I seem to remember there were several places going empty on its management committee. They could have been used to help balance any anti LB stance.
I haven't looked at the web site recently but I wouldn't mind betting those places will still be empty AND BAA pay any out of pocket expenses.

The last thing I need to be doing is logging on to BFW, and them spending my time editing and removing unacceptable posts.

As this thread seems to have run its course, I've now locked it.

Can I suggest that members re read the BFW rules before posting.....
