Angling Trust

As an aside cycling, like angling is essentially a solo pastime .Perhaps I am not the best informed as I am not a heavy user of social media ,but they seem to have ducked under the radar and appear to be able to carry on pedalling with impunity , uninhibited by lockdown . This is not a criticism of cyclists, as I am taking my exercise for an hour everyday by bike [ thats all I can manage on my rusty old steed] , simply an observation . Many of the lycra clad , thunder thighed individuals that sail past me without so much as a nod are clearly out on long rides

Mike, I think a lot of this is to do with reasoning. I’d assume that some of the decision makers pushed for certain freedoms and made a good enough case for retention. Don’t forget Boris is mr Bike and used to run too. They probably decided;
•How can we enforce a running, walking, cycling ban when these people may choose to travel to work in this man or.
•The mental an psychical benefits of light exercise are undeniable, and healthy people are better equipped to recover from illness (cheaper)
•If already fit people vegetate they will become unfit and depressed.
•You can enforce restrictions on time etc etc.

Fishing probably didn’t get quite so much support and is far easier to ban. It’s not just us. My father in law is a keen golfer, his club changed the rules to create a contactless free game, club house closed etc, so you’d only be touching your gear and the ground but the rules came in and that was that. I’m relatively confident that we’ll written proposals like the one above from the AT will allow some pastimes to resume, albeit in a slightly restrictive way. It’s going to require some work from clubs and bailiffs, I don’t think you’ll be camping out for a week on your favourite lake just yet but a few hours on the float for example.

Who knows what’s coming. Currently I’m just grateful I’m receiving enough money to pay the mortgage and I can get outside for a run or walk. Hopefully I can do some fishing soon and hopefully work won’t be far behind so there’s a job to come back to at the end of this rather rubbish holiday.

I think fishing will be allowed quite soon actually. It is largely a solitary pastime (can't work out why the 15metre guideline though when government guidance is 2metres?), and will provide great benefits both physical and mental at a time of great stress. Reports are coming in of mental issues rising and in those with no previous history of mental health issues. I think they would have been better forgetting the input from commercially interested parties, but then that might be me being a cynic, and stuck with the difficulties that the lockdown has presented and the relief that fishing will provide against that!

This is one of the issues with the lockdown - a nervous tension overtaking any and every discussion on how to get back to doing the things we did.

I can only concur with your observations gentlemen, however I do think that the government should have thought out loud as it were , sharing there reasoning with the public would have led to a greater degree of trust .

I think that the A.T have put forward a strong and logical argument regarding why we should all be allowed to get back into action. Hopefully the government will seriously consider the proposals, although as pointed out, the "locality"restriction will undoubtedly mean many of us having to restrict trips to our favoured waters, at least for the time being.
I would like to think that Richards described "Collingham Mob" would be very much the exception to the rule, and that we will all keep to any restrictions introduced. I dont know about you, but I just want to get back out there. I have had enough of this ---- now!

how can anyone like this post .another fish at all cost post angler .send us you measurements i will order you a coffin sorry if this offends anyone but the wife just come home from 2 night shifts at the local hospital on a covoid ward says its like a war zone people knowing they are going to die and others unable to control the bowels and you want to go fishing get a life.this is still taking lives an increase of 18 admitted overnight on the ward
gary

Agree entirely Gary, my sister and my son are both nurses , both work on Covid wards, son doing 15 hr shifts, a friend of his that was a Covid nurse, 40 yrs old died last week from Coronavirus,in fact I was speaking with Sis last night, she is feeling the strain of people dying on an almost daily basis in front of her and her feeling absolutely unable to do anything to help except be there .
For Goodness sake, EVERYBODY should put personal wants to one side until this thing is conquered. We are all in this thing together, its just some do not see the nasty side of things, yes they see statistics but they are a million miles from and detached from the reality of it all.
We >>>>were <<<<living in an I want society, things are very different now, but some people just wont or dont see this.

I agree absolutely
Preserving lives, avoiding spread, keeping safe are all a priority over casting lines.
It’s people like your wife that I stand out side my front door every Thursday evening with my kids and clap for.
I do stand by my post that I firmly believe fishing could be done safely and could very easily be carried out with zero negative impact on the virus spread. Far far less risk than a family of 4 going for a walk down a public footpath with every other family doing the same.
Trying to give each other a wide birth and yet completely oblivious to the fact that the stick your child picked up to poke his brother with was also picked up 3 times prior.
Keeping yourself completely isolated and keeping your hands on your own equipment is something that a considerate angler can very easily do without even having to think too hard about it.
Like I also said we do have our fair share of hermits around too and these are the ones where you give em an inch and they eat the whole bloody thing.
You’ll have the bivvy brigade out in groups sharing space and don’t give a toss and will be negatively impacting what could very well work for everyone which will then put a stop to it anyway.
I’m certainly not thinking of this in a selfish “I want manner” I’m thinking more along the lines of it could work if we did it sensibily and the priority has always been getting shot of this shit that has infected our world.
Hats off to your wonderful wife Gary I shall be clapping again for her and all the others tonight 👍🏻

I don't think it's fair or helpful to make presumptions about peoples motivations or about their own individual situations and how they may personally have been impacted by Covid-19.

The Angling Trust has provided the Govt with guidance on how angling might recommence once Ministers 'acting on medical and scientific advice' deem it appropriate to do so. Right across society we need have to have sensible strategies in place to get things rolling again at some point - it would be monumentally stupid not to consider these things. Does anybody in their right minds seriously think there will be a situation when we go overnight from having restrictions to zero-restrictions at all? Some sort of Covid-19 VE day?!

Surely it is the role of the Angling Trust as angling's representative body to take the lead on this, and it is natural that anglers, including AT members, should wish to debate it. After all many of us do have a lot of thinking time on their hands at the moment.

If you think the AT's phased plan is a non-starter then say so. Perhaps point out why rather than trying to shut down such the debate by alluding to those taking part in those discussions as being motivated by selfish greed and myopic, to my mind that is a bit of an unnecessary cheap shot.

I hear what you say, both Gary and David, and wholeheartedly support all those on the front line. The AT proposal, however, would mean angling can take place WITHOUT adding to the NHS burden. In my view the positives (mental health, exercise, etc) outweigh the negatives, as I don't see any. Also, I'm pretty sure the AT would have taken into account the potential consequences of this initiative.

For your information, my niece is a ward Doctor treating patients with the virus. Trying to make out that people like me are just concerned about ourselves is a load of bo----s. We are all aware of the people doing their jobs to make sure that those of us infected are well cared for. What the hell has that to do with the Angling Trust putting forward a reasonable argument as to why we should all sit under a stone as the world falls down around us? I can see that some of you on here dont take kindly to reasoned debate. Goodbye.

I didn't want to get into the whys and wherefores with the lockdown and the implications reducing it will have, but seeing as it has cropped up...
I don't think anyone in their right mind could not be mindful of what is happening at the moment across the world! I don't think anyone in their right mind could not be grateful for what anyone, in any position to help, is doing - it goes without saying!
However, until there is a vaccine, or there are drugs that can prolong life and aid recovery, we need to look at taking steps to get things moving again.
I have continued to work throughout this pandemic, working in construction. It has taken on a different look recently - everyone is very mindful of social distancing and the need for increased hygiene. If we need to work closely together we wear FFP3 masks! It is a new world somewhat, but one that we must embrace and adhere to! The alternative, the same across many industries, will be a total and utter collapse of the economy. The government at the moment have decided to support both employed and self employed people, as well as offer businesses loans - how long do you think that might be allowed to continue for? EVERY single penny of that will need to be paid back, as it is loaned itself. The longer this state continues the more there is the risk of that total and utter collapse, and with that no longer the means for the government to be able to pay that loan back!

The lockdown has it's negatives, as the report from the AT touches upon, and if the country is to get back on it's feet albeit slowly, the mental and physical well being of every person able to work is going to be needed, and it is here where leisure, in aiding our mental and physical well being, will need to take on the same changes as we do in getting back to work. We will, again, until we see a vaccine or other drugs that will help our cause, have to embrace a different way of doing the things we used to - we will be mindful of social distancing, mindful of washing our hands, and through doing that we will be limiting hugely the transmission of this virus. Those measures in themselves are just as impactful as a lockdown in preventing that transmission!

Kind regards
Damian

Damian, we too have been told we may be going back soon with increased PPE measures. Currently I don’t know what that’s going to entail but I’m confident in being able to work safely and that’s what’s got to happen. It’s not an easy thing to adapt to but it’s just another consideration in a very long RAMs for what are potentially bloody dangerous activity anyway.

sorry if i got you post wrong Andy Mclachlan did not want to upset anyone on this great site .
update on the staff on the wifes ward 2 more tested positive today thats a total of 6 staff on one ward in the last 2 weeks ,they have about 25 staff on the ward so nearly a quater of the staff have the virus with two others waiting for there test results .they have brought staff in from two other local hospitals for cover .
angling trust no keep nets with no match fishing can you see that being adhered to .
Richard Parsons the Dove will be off limits for us hope to see and fish with you again soon

We are told by the 'experts' that living with Covid is the ' new normal'. We are all going to have to adapt the way we work and socialise. Going fishing is going to be part ot that debate. Nice to see so much support for our NHS and the carers etc. Unfortunately one of my neighbours died this week from a Covid so ,like so many, I am aware of the awful consequences of this virus,
Keep safe,
G.T.

Right let’s get things into perspective here it’s obviously a very emotive subject I thought long and hard before posting this but there is one thing that really grinds my gears .... someone in an earlier post compared an nhs ward to a war zone
I’m sorry but it’s nothing like a war zone and people should think before they make flippant comments.. so let’s do a comparison ....
NHS ward dealing with covid 19
Doctors and nurses working bloody hard doing 14 hr shifts
Full range of medications in a largely sanitized area
Hot meals and drinks available
Comfortable beds clean sheets shower facilities
Hand sanitizers on every wall
Ventilators crash teams surgeons all available for the seriously ill
1 at most most 2% chance of fatality from covid 19
Practicing and performing dance routines down hospital corridors

now let’s look at a war zone let’s say the Somme in the first world war
15 year old kids sent to war Living in a mud trench for months standing in water until your feet start to rot
No toilets showers or anything sanitized
The whole place running alive with rats and disease
Sleeping out in the elements freezing cold and wet
When you hear the whistle ..going over the top into a hail of bullets
And if you didn’t go over the top you get shot anyway for cowardice
Wounded left to die in a mudbath
Constant barrage of shells raining down all day
Constant barrage of mustard gas with nothing more than a hessian sack over your head for protection
85-90% of fatality

please don’t think for one minute I am belittling what doctors and nurses are doing at the moment and putting there selves at risk they are all doing a fantastic above and beyond job

but please please don’t ever compare it to a war zone because there is simply no comparison

rant over

Semantics.

David

War zone , it's like' hero ',' icon' , 'legend' words/ phrases that are over used , not malicously but sometimes perhaps in the wrong context . Working on those hospital wards might not be like going over the top , but I for one wouldn't fancy doing 14 hours straight in there , working with a virus that ultimately we don't really understand . Domiciliary and residential care workers are routinely working without the correct PPE providing intimate personal care , now that in my view is bordering on criminal , and I don't use that word lightly .Would you do it for the the minimum wage on a zero hours contract ?

If the choice was that or going to fight in a real war then yeah sign me up....I don’t see soldiers going to war practicing and performing dance routines ( taken from an app called tick tock ... a Chinese app I might add).... as for the ppe thing I like to get the real facts ..ignore the bbc fake news... like the nurse who put out a video crying that her daughter begged her not to go to work because they had no ppe and she didn’t want to die.... well guess what the hospital she worked at (basildon) put out a statement saying they have never had a shortage of ppe........ and guess what else the nurse in question turned out to be a labour activist

now I’m not saying there hasn’t been any problems with ppe but sometimes you have to read between the lines and certainly don’t believewhat the biased broadcasting company tells you
