5th Annual Ousemeister Barbel Challenge, 4th September, 2010 (Sponsored by DNA Baits)

Hi all,

The 5th annual Ousemeister Barbel Challenge will take place on:

Saturday, September 4th, 2010 at Cherryfields, Newton-on-Ouse [1], courtesy of Newton-on-Ouse Angling Club. Due to the nature of the stretch, numbers are limited to about 20.

We will be fishing for two trophies:

  • The Ousemeister Barbel Challenge Shield
  • The Ousemeister Tommy Trophy

The rules are simple - the biggest barbel gets the shield. In the unlikely [2] event that no barbel are caught, the winner will be the angler who catches the largest fish of any species as a percentage of the National record.

The Ousemeister Tommy Trophy will be presented to the angler catching the most Tommy Ruffe. In the event of a tie, the sponsor (Mike Hodgkiss) will arbitrate.

Entry fee is £5 (£3 for NAC members). No rod limit.

The schedule for the day is as follows:

13:00 Meet in Newton-on-Ouse, opposite the Blacksmith's Arms car park [3] to draw pegs
14:00 Fishing begins
20:00 Fishing ends
20:30 Retire to Black Horse pub in Tollerton [4] for food + beer + tall tales

The pub will be serving food later than usual to accommodate us so please let me know if you plan to stay for food so I can let them know how many to expect.

Anyone wishing to attend should please let me know by sending a mail to robin.bowes@yo61.com. Please include your full name and mobile number so we can contact you on Saturday morning in the event that the river is not fishable.

Cheers,

R.

Should be the usual Yorkshire style fishing day, lots of crack few fish but plenty of stories.
If you are going to the pub for the excellent food take note that they do not take Credit or debit cards as I have found to my embarrassment.
Count me in.

I am pleased to announce that this year's Challenge will be sponsored for the 2nd year running byThirsk-based bait specialists DNA Bait [1].

Details are yet to be finalised, but they will be providing samples of their popular B1 barbel bait, as well as a preview of a new "stick" product.

Geoff,

We have travelled elsewhere at other times of the year, but the September event is always going to be on Cherryfields.

Perhaps you'd like to organise something on the Red House stretch in early March?

R.

I am not a york member and consider the red house stretch as having larger rather than many barbel, which may not suit. I would be happy to organise an event on the leeds nun monkton on ouse stretch if they would allow it. Let me know and I will do the negotiations.

Geoff,

We tend to be drawn towards York waters as we have a man on the committee who can negotiate the necessary permissions, and they also allow fishing into dark. Given the stretch you mention, we would probably prefer to fish the opposite bank, being a YDAA water (Beningborough above). But, it's up to you; if you want to approach LDASA and organise something then go ahead.

R.

The stretch I mention and the one from nidd mouth to the pumping station have more fishable pegs than the york ydaa side of the river. We have only ever fished into dusk as I remember which is also allowed by leeds amalgamation. I will begin negotiations.

Myself,Spiros and Sharkbait would like to attend.Very happy with the usual venue. Thanks for organising it,again,Robin.Definitely staying for the food and tall tales.

Hi all,
me and my mate Ryan would like to attend if places allow?

p.s. I've tried to e-mail you Robin but the message won't send.

see you all there, Leon

Hi Robin,
we will both be coming for a couple of drinks, but not staying for food.
Does that mean there is space for us?
cheers Leon

Aha, Tom, you're a lucky man; we have a hit squad booked to wrest the Tommy Trophy from your clammy hand. I shall call them off. ;)

Are you joining us for food afterwards?

R.
