The big problem here isn't so much about angling as it is about fish having no place in the general public's affection. Even most ardent conservationists have no understanding of fish. Fish live out of sight under the water and therefore there is no public awareness of them.

They are called rays not spines. Personally I think that predators are the cause of a fair bit of damage to tails and also dorsal fins. I once watched a 15lb plus barbel being chased underwater by a cormorant which was snapping at its tail, so I don't put it all down to otters.

Paul, there's some nice ooks in the Gamakatsu range that are very sharp, fine in the wire but very strong. They seem to be aimed at the Matchfishing fraternity but I have been very impressed with them. Worth a look I'd say. What Simon says about Sedges is also true. They are a great hook for roach.
