    Reasons for Barbel population decline

Graham as you know most of my fishing is focused on the Thames and one thing is for sure and that is that small barbel and chub are thin on the ground (on the three stretches I fish at least and from what i hear most of the middle and lower river). I do think that outside of a few popular...

    Late Spawning time.??

Come on now Graham in these days of social media, email, websites etc that is hardly a difficult or costly proposition - you could even back it up with a good old fashioned sign on the gate. It is routine practice now on many stillwaters to close for a period once the fish start to spawn so to...

    Late Spawning time.??

Mark I don't need to go and look at small rivers as I've fished on a few of them.....and medium ones and big ones! The close season, in its current form, doesn't work on any of them. I have to say it did make me laugh that your argument for keeping the close season is that you have seen people...

    Late Spawning time.??

I have yet to see a argument for the close season (in its current form) that actually makes any sense at all, the truth it is out of date on a number of levels and simply not fit for purpose. Many vocal pro retention anglers like to take the moral high ground and talk about the selfish anglers...

    Inline weights

I use heavy inline leads almost exclusively for any carp/ barbel fishing over a clean hard bottom. ;) The rig I use I have seen written about by Jan Porter and also I think Martin Bowler. Take an inline lead and push out and discard the hard plastic insert, thread the lead onto the line/...

    Close season.

All that would serve to do David is irritate me as I would see persons who quite possibly originate from Eastern Europe fishing on a daily basis (once the weather warms up at least). Occasionally I might also see the Environment Agency boat stopping boaters for speeding and ignoring the...

    Close season.

One question to add...... can anyone who is a staunchly pro retention give any kind of defense of the current dates of the close season ? My major bugbear is the 14th march to 1st May period.

    Close season.

The Close Season in my mind is totally antiquated and it grates more and more every year, particularly as the seasons seem to have shifted in the last few years. I have to say that I find it very hard to respect some of the views for retention as they make very little or no sense to me. 1)...

BFW poll on close season lift or extension.

All those still in favour have a read the EA document on the rational for the close season - even they admit that the original reason for having a close season is no longer valid (fish being taken for food in the 19th century). The 'banks need a rest' argument is total nonsense as no other...

Government gives go ahead for New Cormorant and Goosander Management Plan

I have to say that the 'result' was a major disappointment to me. A loosening of the rules of an existing licensing system is not much of a win in my eyes. I was really hoping that they would be added to the 'General Licence' where they belong.
