    Hook snapped

I've been using the Korum Xpert power hooks in a size 8 with some success however I had one break yesterday when pulling into a decent barbel. It snapped on the bend almost immediately after hooking the fish and I didn't put too much pressure on so I assume it must have been a bad hook. Since I...

    Best time for catching...

Last hour before dusk is the best I find, especially when the river is low and clear on a bright day.It it's running high and coloured then they will feed at any time in my experience.

    Landing net woes

I've got one of the Abu folding nets, cheap as chips at 15 quid and it does the job,if it falls to bits I'll just bin it and get a new one. There's an interesting review of barbel landing nets here........ http://www.anglersmail.co.uk/tackle/accessory-tests/barbel-spoon-nets-tested-37025

    Landing net woes

It certainly is a well designed adapter which is why I bought it,sadly it lasted 4 weeks and then developed a crack in the cam mechanism,I then found out why it's called a quick release net adapter-it released my landing net into the river.:(

    What a prat

I've got a list of items to put in the car before a session, the problem for me is I sometimes forget to read the list, senility is creeping up fast.

    New Rod

Before recommending a barbel rod it would be useful to know what venue you are going to be fishing.A Korum twin tip would be a good all rounder with 1.75 and 2.2tc tops.

    Trent now and then.

I've been fishing the Trent since the early 70's and in my opinion it is a better barbel river than 20 years ago.Back in the mid 90's it was predominantly chub with the odd barbel being a bonus. At that time the average fish was between 3-4lbs,the barbel have grown on and now average 7-8lbs with...

    Remarkable coincidence

For some reason I can't get the 3rd picture to load to photobucket but here's 2 of them, They look like different fish to me and around the 10lb mark. The 3rd fish which I can't load on here had some mouth damage where someone had caught it on an Aberdeen 1/0.The 2 above had no mouth...

    Remarkable coincidence

That was my first thought, they are fine. All the fish did look to me like doubles so there was no obvious discrepancy ie a 4-5 pounder weighing in at 10lbs. I have in the past caught the same fish twice on the same day so I did think a couple of them could be a repeat capture, but on close...

    Landing net handle

Useful thread for me as I left my Drennan super specialist on the river bank over the weekend and no one has handed it in yet :(. I've always been pleased with the Drennan.I replaced the internal bush a while back which the company sent foc(well done Drennan). If it doesn't appear then I...

    Remarkable coincidence

I wonder what the chances are of catching 3 barbel all weighing exactly 10lbs in a 4 hour session on the middle Trent.

Had my gear nicked last night

I can only echo the sentiments of other members, probably some addict that needs cash for his next fix, what a country we live in.

    Lightweight Chairs

I have the original Korum lightweight chair which has given me about 4 years of good service. It's the one which can be attached to the Korum ruckbag and carried on your back.I don't think they make them any more and the one that has superceded it is an adjustable recliner and slightly heavier I...

    What Fluoro For Combi Rigs?

It's remarkable stuff John, straight off the spool it is a bit curly and doesn't hang straight but after stretching it out between the fingers under tension a few times it does eventually hang straight. It also sinks like a stone, hugs the bottom and has great abrasion resistance,I've been...

    What Fluoro For Combi Rigs?

I'm using 20lbs Korda IQ2 tied to 15lbs drennan sinkbraid. The knot I use is a version of the albright knot, there are a few different versions of this knot.Mine will hold when pulling for a break,it's always the hook that straightens out first and that does require extreme pressure. I can...

    playing fish without clutch

I have not until recently used the clutch whilst playing a fish, preferring,as you do to have the clutch locked up and use the rod action and backwinding on the handle when necessary. However I have recently replaced my shimano 5000 baitrunners with a couple of...

Free spirit e class 10ft bank creeper

As most of my barbel fishing is done at a range of less than 30 yards and sometimes in tight swims with overhanging trees I have also gone down to a 10' rod this season.I bought one of these- Korum Carp 10ft Rod - Korum, Fishing Made Easy. It's actually a light carp rod with a 2.5lb test...

    Deep Hooked Barbel

I have never experienced this phenomenon but I caught a fish the other day that had about 6''of what looked around 10-12lbs nylon hanging out of it's mouth. On closer inspection the line went deep into the fish's stomach and the hook couldn't be seen.I ended up cutting the line as short as I...

    Best way to hook meat

You may laugh but I'm sure most of us have been there, when trying to pull out of a snag and the end tackle suddenly frees itself only to catapult up a nearby tree at speed. Then when you try and extricate it from the tree there is usually someone walking past thinking it must be the first time...

    Best way to hook meat

I have been using the korum meat screws with some success........... Meat Screws - Korum, Fishing Made Easy Providing you don't cast too far with a big piece of spam they hold the meat well. The only problem I found is that they come off the hair loop a bit too easily when hooking a fish or...
