Hook snapped

I've been using the Korum Xpert power hooks in a size 8 with some success however I had one break yesterday when pulling into a decent barbel. It snapped on the bend almost immediately after hooking the fish and I didn't put too much pressure on so I assume it must have been a bad hook.
Since I started using these hooks I have banked over 30 doubles in some snaggy swims and up until now have had confidence in them. They are cheap as chips at £1.25 for a pack of 10 and it makes me think that perhaps quality control is not as it should be.
I don't mind paying 4 quid for specialised carp hooks as long as they do the job and they have more consistent quality, the thing is now I have lost confidence in them as it did break far too easily..........back to the drawing board.:(

1 hook in 30 aint bad. Just sounds like you have a faulty one. If you still worried switch to Drennan

I've been looking at the new ESP cryogen hooks

The gripper pattern looks like a good barbel hook for hair rigs with the classic wide gape, beaked point and slightly inturned eye. They also make some bold claims about the manufacturing process making them stronger than the equivalent gauge hooks.Anyone tried them yet ?

Been using the gripper pattern since they first came out Steve,I've had numerous barbel using the same hook. They stay sharp, quality hooks

Been using ESP cryogen gripper hooks in size 8 this season and have landed big fish from some very demanding hook and hold situations and floodwater fishing, few hookpulls mind and one had slightly gaped after landing a double but other than that fantastic hooks. no hook is perfect, just some better than others

For 'hook and hold' situations I always use Fox Arma Point SSBP (in barbless, but that's immaterial in this context). They stay sharp and I've 100% confidence in them.
On the Severn I tend to use lighter hooks.

N.B.. we use/lose so few hooks compared to the amount of bait we go through that the actual costs of hooks, to me, is insignificant.

Sam - in light of the 'slightly gaped' experience, not the best recommendation I've ever read. :)

I've been using the Gardner talon tip wide gape, and can recommend them.

I still use the korum power hooks and will continue to do so, used them since they came out and have no reason to change... one broken hook wont put me off i have every confidence them..

The only occasion I've experienced hooks snapping, is around 10 years ago when I tried the Korum S3 hooks in size 12 when tench fishing. It happened twice in the same session, once to a carp and once to very big tench - I'm sure it was probably just a defective batch and that I was very unlucky, but I've never used again since, how could I?

I like the new grippers, slightly finer gauge than my normal hooks so good when I need to scale down. I use them for carp fishing and they are great.

But yet again, for all round barbel fishing, I will recommend the Hook by Pallatrax. You can get them off BFW and they are mega sharp, stay sharp and they dont snap or bend.

Pallatrax the Hook.

With a product that is produced in such huge numbers I would imagine that every hook cannot be checked for quality, I have used these hooks for a while changing to them after Mustad stopped producing the hook I had used for years, so far I have had no problems with them.
