Guy, when I was fishing the Loddon hard through the winter a few years go with Hi-NuVal I nearly always flavoured with Cranberry. That caught a fair few Barbel, although the Chub loved it.
If you're patient you should be able to pick a second hand Drennan Tench Rod up off thiefbay for that kind of money. Some do go for silly money though, took me a couple of months to get mine for £60.
Since we seem to be talking holliday fishing, planning on heading down to one or the other of these, probably in early May.
Would really like to try some fly fishing for Bonefish. Going with the wife so not a serious fishing holliday but have permission to get a day or two in :)

£500 for a day of a professionals time seems pretty reasonable to me. You want a working day of my time it's going to cost you £750 to £1000.
Consider what it would cost you to have any other professional dedicate a whole day just to you. It is their living after all.

Alan, surprised you thought the XBRs were not smooth. I have 4 of these (5500 size) and wouldn't swap them for anything, superb reels IMHO. If they have one fault though then it is that they are bloody heavy, they're quite bulky too. Depends what you want them for, for close work I still use...
