I'm not sure how driving to the river and fishing all day on my own is dangerous. Especially when I go to work 5days a week and mix with folks from a wide area. My job can't be done at home BTW.

I had a 4.08 pb brownie off the Dove last year on meat fishing a slack in high water & I have caught plenty on bread over the years.😁 I reckon fly fishing was developed to make trout fishing more of a challenge!

I don't want to sound like a know it all but I have been feeder fishing for years. If you use a very dry active groundbait in a cage feeder for instance you can get most of the contents emptying on hitting the water. Good for fishing on the drop with a long hooklength on a stillwater, but no use...

If you get the consistency of your groundbait right you should be able to strike the contents out soon after it hits bottom. It seems to work for me anyway!

I remember Jim Gibbinson did an article on this when fishing for tench. Goes completely against the Korum mentality 😁

I think it's the oil in the pellets that goes off first. I guess the best thing to do is to use your nose. I keep mine in my bait freezer that way I know they are as good as they can be. Probably a confidence thing 😉

My experience of canal fishing for perch is that they soon move when put under pressure. I would start off fishing likely areas overhanging trees boats etc. You should soon get action if they are there.

I've been using one of these for over 20 years in all weathers without too many problems. Not as quick as gas but I'm never in too much of a hurry when I'm fishing TBH. It runs on meths & since I work in a lab that means free fuel ;)...

It can often work the other way round... no bites on big baits but plenty on maggot.. that's one of the things that makes it interesting!
