Some good posts all round. I don't have the answer to the following, but :- How many rivers which are now in seeming decline for Barbel, really ever had a self sustaining population at all ?? Like I said, I don't know the answer to this and I'm sure that many did , but would be interesting to...

My point is that on some rivers which we wouldn't consider 'ideal Barbel habitat' they do grow big................ I.E. some Southern Tidal stretches................ do they spawn successfully there !?!?! I VERY much have my doubts........... I am in no way advocating their stocking in...

It's a difficult one...... I've caught out of season Trout shedding milt and eggs and I've caught 'In Season' Chub doing the same (although never Barbel) but that's ok 'cos they're not spawning......... You can't legislate for seasons........... And to have a closed season to 'protect spawning...
