    Feeding patterns

For me I've found (roughly) an hour or so in to dark and two hours before first light are productive. That being said I have caught at all hours of the day and night. There was a scientific paper published that found a strong relationship between light cycles and Barbel behaviour whereby...

    Tackle box rods

I took a gamble and recently got their 13ft specialist float rod. I've not had the chance to bank any Barbel on it yet but my first impression is that they're very well made and on par with more accepted brands costing significantly more.

    Barbel on the move!

That was a nice bit of reading! Having read a good number of scientific papers on the species it never ceases to amaze me just how far an individual fish can and will travel assuming habitat connectivity facilitates movement.

    Trotting very heavy streamer!

A tried and tested matchman technique is to bury your hook inside a caster. I've not applied this approach in the circumstances you describe but it's served me well when pole fishing on the cut. The main disadvantage I can see is the small nature of the bait and an inability to be somewhat...

    Barbel Weight gain.

Fish growth is governed by many factors such as geographical location, water temperature, food availability, age of fish, level of competition for resources etc etc. In general terms fish will feed most willingly in the warmer months in order to attain weight gain so as to sustain them through...

    DIY speci waggler

Thanks Clive, I will most definitely be checking those out. I'm making a concerted effort to spend more time on the float this coming season. I've got an unknown stretch of water to have a go at and what better way to search it than with homemade floats.

    DIY speci waggler

I've not got a lathe just yet but after making a few speci wags out if some dowel I had I'm definitely considering buying one. Nice work on the float!

    DIY speci waggler

UTV! It's the lack of football that's got me making floats again. I can't be doing with all this time and nothing to do. You should give float making a go, it's not too difficult. If you don't fancy turning bodies on a lathe you can buy parts to assemble.

    DIY speci waggler

Thanks for the replies! I'm going to have a play with some 16 & 19mm balsa dowel and see how I get on. DH floats are of a very good quality (I have a fair few stick floats of his) but catching on something you've made can't be beaten! Whether or not they're any good remains to be seen but...

    DIY speci waggler

Hi all, First post/new member so hopefully this is the right section for this! I'm thinking of making some speci wagglers for some float fishing fun and to kill some time until normality returns. I've made pole floats and reed wagglers previously but can't find much info on speci waggler...
