What type of water am I fishing?

Sorry I lost my internet after posting this! I know its a nightmare. I just thought I'd put it up and see what people thought. I mention the mere's as I live in Manchester and so when I fish anywhere in cheshire thats bigger than a good old chuck with a big waggler it a 'Cheshire Mere'...

What type of water am I fishing?

Ok, this may sound like a weird question but its one that always annoys me. Hoe do I know (when fishing stillwaters) what type of water Im on. I mean, when does a pond become a lake, or a Mere? Is it regional do people call the same thing something different? I sometimes wish I could shut by...

    Colouring Balsa

Hello, Don't know if this fits here, but I have been making pole floats and have countless natural balsa ones. I have been using a super tough floor varnish to protect and seal. Works a treat. However, Im fed up of colourless ones and would like to know is there any way of colouring the...

    Compact camera with infrared remote

I dont know about compacts. But if you want to go for a compact for space saving reasons, then what I'm about to say will be useless to you, but maybe will help someone else. Canons budget DSLR 1000D has remote capability, and is a pretty good camera. I use it at work. And if you keep watching...

    Depth of Water

Ok, two questions here that are linked. The shallower runs over gravel with the streamer weed that split the deeper sections of the river, how shallow would it have to be for a say 5-7lb barbel to NOT think about hanging about there.... make sense? Secondly how soon after these sections...

    tench fishing

I had a similar experience a few years ago on a venue that sounds quite similar to yours. The way I cracked it, was to feed a tiny amount of small pellets, say 12-20 4mm pellets and fish a pellet over the top. Do that after every fish. I found, on the venue I was on anyway, that the more bait I...

    More questions than really necessary??

I must admit that in the past I have asked such questions on here. Now I dont pretend to be an expert at this barbel fishing. In fact its my first real season after them. I have been fishing for getting on 20 years now. I think sometimes, certainly in the questions I have asked, that you're not...

    Meat vs Halibut Pellet....

The river is a small river yes. However, i think the length i fish doesn't have a great amount of fish, hence the lack of anglers, but i do believe that when they do come out, they are bigger than the ones on other stretches (of which i do not have the rights to fish). Im going to go with the...

    Meat vs Halibut Pellet....

YEah good point, I was debating fishing 2 or 3 of the 4mm pellet on the hair, but I guess my real question was to 'uneducated' fish, would you have confidence in the pellet over say meat?

    Meat vs Halibut Pellet....

Ok, so, I fish a relatively lightly fished river and due to my success (or lack of) from a roving approach, I want to target one or two swims for a few sessions to see if there are any fish present. My predicament is feed hemp/4mm halibut pellets, but what to go with for hookbait? Would you guys...

    Crucian carp

after tench today, I hooked a crucian on a small piece of meat, played it, got it to the surface, estimated it to be the biggest one I have ever caught (about 2 1/2lb), when a foot away from the net, i got that horrible sensation of the hook pulling and the fish sinking from view. the air was...

    Ghost Carp

I think that would be classed as an Albino David. Funny how fish stocks turn up 'oddities' every now and again. They do fight like tigers though. Hopefully be back on the river soon though!

    Ghost Carp

Update on this... After chasing it for a few months I eventually managed to catch one of the Ghosties I was asking advice about. I later found out that these fish are over 20 years old... crafty is an understatement. It weighed 9lb 10oz if anyone is interested. Took it on good old Waggler...
