It started in earnest when I went back to fishing after a long break (of 15-odd years - life and its shenanigans got in the way) in 2016 when I was determined to improve my river fishing, having spent most of my formative fishing years on lakes.
However, my first actual barbel was in the...
I'm still really enjoying it and the show has become a reliable relaxation tool for me. Leaves me with a big dumb smile on my face every week. I'd seriously be happy for this to carry on until they're physically unable to do it (as long as they're still enjoying themselves of course).
RE the...
I think the "answer" to this, and what everyone - even those who are arguing discussing the point - is saying is that too much of ANY non-natural bait is "a bad thing".
As I said earlier in the thread, I've always only ever used a single piece of meat on the hook and only change it when it's...
I THINK they are rebadged/made by Daiwa. I've got a Crivit freespool which came in a joblot of tackle I got on eBay and it's exactly the same as a Daiwa freespool I've got (can't remember exactly which model, but one of the cheaper ones obvs).
I've never used pellets and don't intend to (a single meat hookbait all the way for me), and I'm not going to get involved with the ethical argument about their use but, just generally, does no one bother with the Hinders pellets anymore? I know they changed (and perhaps have changed again?)...
Is there a particular reason he's selling them? Both the kevlar and kevlex versions are excellent rods and still better than many premium ones coming out now in my opinion.
I have iterations of both and was VERY lucky to win those auctions for not very much money. I got the kevlex (Extreme...
I like 100% cotton stuff for summer work, but of course the trade-off there is easy tearing. And you know EXACTLY where it will tear 9 times out of 10......
Bill
I think what Dave meant to say was that it's magic.
(Despite being nowhere near them location wise, I regularly pay a visit to the H. Avon and D. Stour threads purely for your photos Dave. Absolutely mustard stuff.)
I guess that's quite often the way though isn't it - if you want decent breathability you almost always sacrifice waterproofing to a degree. Not that I'm an expert (obviously!) but I've yet to come across a garment where the water runs right off it in beads like a frying pan AND is...
Thanks for the replies all.
The Prologic suit being heavy and holding onto water might be a deal breaker - I'm mobile when pike fishing and can easily cover 6+ miles in a day.
Now looking at Trakker stuff👍
Appreciate we're coming into spring now, but I'm thinking ahead...
I need to get some new winter outer gear (already got a decent base layer for cycling which has also been brill for fishing) and I'm looking at the Prologic thermo suit (jacket and bib/brace). Seems to be reasonably priced for...
The Speedia seems to be the go-to for most. I don't own and have never used a Speedia, but I can recommend the Grice & Young Avon Royale Supreme, very good condition and working order examples of which are always on the Bay for very little money. I've used it successfully for legering in fast...
Never tried it for barbel, nor do I personally know anyone that has, but a carper acquaintance and a lot of his compatriots swear by the whole range and won't use anything else (other than naturals in certain conditions).
I haven't forgotten the roach! They're on the backburner for now, not because I have a low opinion of them (far from it), I just want to concentrate on tench, perch and pike this year, with a few barbel(/chub) trips. I'm planning a proper roach campaign on the BA for winter 2023/24, with a...
Thanks Graham. Interesting, I'll take another look at Horcott when it starts to warm up.
I'm still probably going to be joining Swindon Isis anyway for Sutton Benger - it'll be lovely to wet a line in there again after so long. Between that and Seagry as my favourite part of the BA in terms...
Funnily enough I've looked at that one, but I'm told the "open access"/day ticket lake (with the tench) is hammered and constantly busy.
Yep, still a lot of very decent tench in there and, probably, the best chance of a big 'un within a sensible distance. The only problem (and I'll acknowledge...
Thanks for the replies all.
I'm desperate to get some tinca action (I've not caught ANY, despite several attempts at likely venues [I spent much of one summer hammering various venues on the Somerset levels with no luck], since coming back to fishing in 2016), so at this stage I have no problem...
