In the early 90s I caught a few barbel on float fished tares when roach fishing. One day I decided to try tare with the feeder. I cut slots in a block end feeder, filed it with hemp seed and put a tare on the hook and caught lots of barbel to 6lb plus. This was on the Trent. I was a keen match...
I am lucky because I live near the Trent. Only been serious barbel fishing for just over 2 years but I have fished the Trent for nearly 50 years. It seems that there is a common misconception that the Trent is full of barbel everywhere however long stretches contain very few fish. Some of this...
I've tied both high and low oil pellets and caught on both. On some days one type of pellet or size is best and on another it's something completely different. I carry lots of small packs of various pellets and experiment on two rods. It keeps you busy on a cold winter's day when nothing is...
I caught plenty of barbel last winter on pellets. In fact I couldn't catch on anything else! Not even maggots. On three occasions I had to change from maggot to pellet to catch. After that I only used pellet. The size of pellet was sometimes important.
I have never caught a barbel with a barbless hook still in its mouth. Caught plenty with barbed, some trailing a length of line. The latest had a horrible inflamed lip and a corroding hook with a braid hooklink. Was pleased to remove.
Needless to say I use barbless and they frequently fall out...
Just one point to make. In a large deep river, how do you know whether you have a problem or not? You can't see the fish that manage to eject the bait.
I have some cheap Chinese digitals that are back lit so are ideal for night time. Every time I have checked them they are very accurate. Well the wife went to Majorca for a girlie weekend on Friday. She wanted to check the weight of her case so we used these scales. It was just over 7 kilos...
Yes, it does get busy!
It is where the river is split into two by Nabs Island. All the river traffic goes over the other side. I like it but now prefer somewhere quieter. There are loads of stretches of the Trent like that nowadays.
Surely this forum should be about sharing information, as well as asking questions. I have been barbel fishing for the past 18 months and I have learned loads from this website but, even though my catches haven't been amazing, I have shared information about river temperature, the methods I've...
I have fished there on and off for the past 18 months. Stephen's information is pretty much spot on. Most of the stretch is fast and shallow and barbel can be found all along. The bigger fish are usually in the weir pool but it is very popular. No night fishing allowed. You will hear about...
