    Spam spam and more spam

off the mark for the season last night and I would just like to thank my sponsors B & M bargains. They truly are the choice of the angling elite. And don't forget folks, just because it's already flavoured doesn't mean it won't absorb more flavours....

    Giant Hogweed recognition

The edges of the GH leaves are massively more serrated - just study comparative pics on the web - and are very different in size and movement when it first emerges out of the ground. Just huge leaves, especially when it's already been cut (say by a strimmer). When it grows back up (often within...

    Which Socks?

Communal living at its finest. I just keep putting on extra socks till me wellies feel snug. Had 3 pairs on for 36 hours non-stop at the weekend. That's just on me right foot though, only 2 pairs (one normal, one thick winter walking) on me left foot which is bigger. And I did take me wellies...

Day ticket water West Sussex? Arun? Rother?

My elderly parents have retired to West Sussex. When visiting them later in the summer I'd love to try the Rother or maybe Arun for a barbel. Anyone know of any good day ticket stretches? I see Pulborough have stopped doing day tickets for the Arun, and I notice Worthing Piscatorials do...

    June 16

Work hours mean I can't get out of Leeds, so on the 16th I'll try to do 00.00-02.00 and 17.30 to 23.00 on the Aire.

    bait

Done quite a lot of reading and thinking about this in the few weeks since I posted my thread about pre-baiting. At the moment my plan for this season is to use more bait, but fish with less bait. Fishing small rivers where there are neither big shoals nor a lot of anglers, and possibly only...

    travel rod

Just got the John Wilson travel barbel 4 piece meself, under 50 quid, for when I go fishing on me bike. Only tested on pond carp so far, but the signs were good.

    bait

Of course stalking this rare species in a B&M is a sport for the early and middle stages of the closed season, when the thumbs are being well and truly twiddled. In April it may seem more fun than fishing a carp pond, but it is more challenging and there will be more blanks. At busier...

New fishery open on the River Wye which might be of interest

Aw, got excited then when I saw there´s a nice-looking campsite 200 yards downstream and an even better looking pub... then I saw the site's "no camper vans" rule, grr... frustrating. Suppose we could stay at Lucksall and still fish a day at Hoarwithy ... so yeah, thanks for the heads-up!

    June 16 dilemma

nah. people often feel they have to give up fishing for years, often for relationship reasons. Same football. Hopefully they´ll come back to it later some people can give up smoking, some can´t. some people think it´s ok to let their kids smoke, some don´t. some people think it´s ok to...

Nice to see the EA doing there job ?

You haven´t been to Worcester in the last few years then? OK, it´s a bit of an assumption, but seriously, the chances of a Jan Bukowsi in Worcester being a UK passport holder are pretty low. Incidentally anyone who thinks Polish fisherman fish without a licence and steal and kill more fish...

    June 16 dilemma

Brilliant Derek. But knowing that area pretty well meself, you would need to have a screw loose to be in ´Seffy Park´at night. On the other hand the Deep Heat and erratic behaviour might help as scally repellent. Not a straight comparison, though is it? I would never give up watching &...

    June 16 dilemma

I quite often have to put Deep Heat on me bad back just before I leave the house and head for the river, and trust me, if one molecule of it got onto me end tackle (and you can take that either way), I would not be catching anything all day. My hands get the most thorough wash in recorded...

Nice to see the EA doing there job ?

The EA themselves take out ads in Polish language in publications that circulate in the Polish community in the UK, and in other E.European communities´ papers, to communicate the laws and customs of our fishing culture. So I can´t see anyone ending up in court for pointing out what everyone...

    Otter

I´m not having a go, nor necessarily disagreeing with the thread, but the fact that this was in Hereford, where barbel are prolific, doesn´t really help the argument of an anti-otter barbel angler. I had the best 2 days barbel fishing of my life within a mile or two of this fella´s house...

    Pre-baiting

Thanks for the heads-up on that. Found the late lamented Keith´s article https://barbel.co.uk/site/vbulletin/forum/barbel-talk/7721-ever-thought-pre-baiting.html incidentally here´s the other one by his mate that he mentions. At first I thought "that´s not very relevant to my little...

    Pre-baiting

Interesting thread. In my own thread on this subject the other week, it all got a bit diverted onto the subject of clearing access to the unfished swims, so I never got much in the way of replies about pre-baiting and will be having to trust my own instincts too. I´m working abroad this month...

    St George.

What have the Romans ever done for us? Well St George was apparently very impressed by the improvements to water quality brought by the Romans, which did no end of good for the dragon-hunting community in the middle east of course. He would surely have felt likewise about the positive influence...

    Spam spam and more spam

Passed by another B & M yesterday - a very heavily fished one as it's so near to the city's biggest angling superstore - not normally my scene as you know I prefer stalking the wild and untouched swims with my vintage Crabtree tackle - but as soon as I was told "you'll be lucky to get any...

    Spam spam and more spam

7 - the entire herd. The form I was in I could have caught all day if there'd been any more. Hard to put a finger on why sometimes they just don't seem to be around. Might be the store temperature, which did seem slightly higher yesterday after a cold spell.
