It certainly is annoying, and typical I suppose. There's bound to be some jammy bugger who can get away with it, I'll spend a fair bit of time trying to justify a few hours, but the chances are slim to be honest.

The Shimano 6000 OC is a good reel Dave, I had one and sold it, and now wished I hadnt. The 6000D is also good. Both are front drags. John

I agree with Graham, I use stilton,pastry and cheddar kneaded together, any other additives are pretty much pointless, a hungry chub will eat it anyway...in fact, a hungry chub will eat pretty much anything. IMO, bread is a better bait for chub, for me, it seems to outfish cheesepaste most of...

Whilst fishing the Great Ouse I heard Jeff....which I suppose was quite fitting given the hours he spent there. Great angler and angling writer.

There are plenty of youngsters on the commie circuit Stephen, I still fish them with my club, and there's no shortage. Some of them are bloody good too. Sadly, it's rare to see a young angler, ie/ less than 16yrs on the river, which really is a shame. Being able to catch 100lb in a few hours...

Double hook-ups have never been a problem for me Jeff, it's happened on a few occasions now, with no detriment to any barbel involved. Most barbel anglers can say the same. That said, I don't catch a double a trip, or even two, like some, so I usually can only dream about such things, Jeff.

I suspect the Frampton claim must be a wind up Jeff, the river there is 1.5km wide, and I suspect more saltwater than brackish. It's also dangerous, with a huge tidal range. My comment about Epney I wasn't sure about really, I'd say Minsterworth holds the most realistic chance of a Lower Lower...

I heard Epney on the Severn, not sure how true that is though.

Considering he lives on the Trent Jeff, where else would you expect him to fish? I've no idea why everyone chooses to get on his back. He seems to do a lot better than the average Trentman, and he's hardly done much barbel fishing this year anyway.

Interesting thread this, I've often thought of trying stretches that are hardly fished, and I'm sure they contain barbel. On the movement subject, I recently caught a 12lb fish a few miles below Worcester...a friend caught the same fish almost 10 miles downstream 12 months previously. Amazing...

Funnily enough Terry, the infamous Mr Doherty has been on a chub quest of late. He's just as good at catching chub as he is barbel, and has banked 5, yes FIVE chub over six pounds in just ten days, and then topped it with a 7lb fish last week. Of course, the only pictures are ones on grass or a...

I used to have a BAA handbook from 1971...in there, the page for Buildwas said, "a salmon angler caught a 12.5lb barbel out of season". So the out of season story has been going on for years, which makes me think it's twaddle!!

I've just got myself some Sealskinz Terry, and so far they seem ok. They come in a variety of thermal ratings etc. Not cheap though...i paid £27 for mine. John
